Title: Air Pump
Post by: B.Martin on September 23, 2011, 08:52:18 AM
Right, so i hear of lots of people removing the airpump etc. So i was interested and headed over to RX7club for a quick search and read a few threads on the subject. I gather the airpump is used for passing emissions and warming up the cat below 3800rpm? I\'m not 100% sure but i didn\'t think an \'89 RX-7 even had to pass an emisisons test in the UK? But lets not worry about that right now.

I\'ve been looking into this as i was talking to Mitch about these 2 x 90 degree bends in the air intake system and understand these are quite restrictive, but you can\'t sort this unless you remove the airpump? Is that correct?

I\'ve also read that when running on stock/chipped managment that removal of the airpump can cause some idle and low rpm driving problems does anyone have any experience of this? Basically what i\'m asking is, is it worth removing the air pump? My plans for the near future is (engine wise) new exhaust, new induction set up, new top mount IC, Greddy compressor pipe for IC, Blitz ecu to support said mods.

Thanks for any help an clarifying this for me.

Sounds like your going a similar route to what I have done. I removed mine and blanked every thing off as you should. I\'ve had no issues relating to it as such. Just make sure you get a good seal on the blanking plates or any hoses you have to block off. Some people seem to have problems after doing it. I didn\'t.

What blanking plates did you use? Where did you get them, how much? Is this mod cost effective and have you changed the air filter intake set up to a more direct one?

I got mine off some one on here. Think it was Jit when he was breaking a car. They are easy enough to make tbh. I\'d do that if I were doing it again. You can buy them although Im not sure if you have to get them from the states or if there is a UK seller.

And no I haven\'t sorted out my intake yet. Infact I\'ve still got my AFM in too its just unplugged. Need to sort it sooner rather than later. Its one of my many jobs to do over the winter I think so I\'ll be ready for next seasons track sessions :)

I did it, never looked back - it\'s one of the essential tick list items on the route to higher power - it\'s so much in the way with it\'s associated Air Control Valve on the side of the LIM.

DIY all the way. Removing stuff is easy, its getting the removed stuff to fit again thats the problem!

But in all honesty. Its pretty self explanatory really once you\'ve got the block off plates. Im sure there is a write up knocking around. You\'ll have to put the keyboard time in though cause I can\'t remember who wrote it or what its called!

As Ade says, if you\'re even remotely handy with a spanner this is a job you can do without too much hassle.

A handful of nuts / bolts to undo, and 4-5 vac lines to block off - that\'s all it is.

There is a good write up on how to do this on 1300cc.com site

Thanks for all the info, anyone know where to buy the blanking panels from and the dual alternator set up? I have seen the one dragon sell but thats £100, i\'m sure i\'ve seen people pick them up for much cheaper?

So whats needed then is-

Anything else?

Post by: Prof on September 26, 2011, 09:44:23 AM
Some of the tuners on here should be able to sort you out with the blanking plates - failing that I have seen them on ebay from time to time - you want to get steel ones that are 2mm thick or ally ones that are similar or thicker - don\'t go for anything \'thin\' as it will not give a good seal.

You only need the blank off for the ACV and the split air pipe to the cat - the \'kits\' normally come with BAC valve and OMP blank off as well - these are not needed for air pump removal.

You will probably want to get a gasket to go behind the blanknig plate, or use some liquid gasket it will help prevent troublesome vac leaks.

Dual pulley - should be possible to get one for about £30 or so.

The belts should be available from any good motor factors - but you will want to get 2 that are matched in size.  I get mine from Clive as he matches them up.

For plugging the vac lines - you can just use some bolts that are a little bigger than the id of the vac line then either tie wrap them on or use a hose clamp.  If you want to do it properely then you\'d remove pretty much the whole vac rack ;)

Right then, well i\'ve seen some dual alternator pulleys on the bay @ £50 but i think this is steep still. I found a blanking plate on PR - http://www.pineappleracing.com/13bnaaircontrolvalveblock-offplate-1.aspx Would that do a good job? I can\'t seem to find any of the kits anywhere?

This is the kit:

FD alternator won\'t fit without some bodging - you should be able to source dual alt pulley for 13BT (s4/s5) engines.

That\'s a good price!

I\'ve got a mate who can make the blanking plates (the same guy who did mine, they are really good quality!) about £30 + postage I\'d have thought, and you can normally get dual alternator belt pulleys for £20-£25 on here.

The belts are 800mm long - in Halfords the part number is HB800a :p Sad I know!

Im running all emission stuff removed with duel alt pully only thing i noticed is sometime the low down rpm can be a little unresponsive. E.g. Trying to do 30 in 4th dost like it as your too close to being off the peddle and on it so it sometimes jerks but if your in 3rd its fine but the engine spins up faster.
Next job for me is mr2 power steering pump and remove that belt driven one and put a better alt on as the stock alt can\'t charge the battery with all stereo and lights on properly does charge but its slower and not at a good 14.4v all the time. But yes removing airpump is good

This is interesting as I\'ve removed the air pump and driving at 2k in any gear is jerky when just trying to maintain a steady speed.

I drives me mad, could this be the reason?

That really does sound like a TPS problem - the throttle sensor can give a \'dead-spot\' which is between 1000 and 2000 revs.

Try this:

With the car in Neutral and warmed up, gradually increase the revs - you will probably find a point where you it will cycle up and down about that point - being ok below it and ok above it.

If that\'s what you are seeing - then the TPS is probably in need of adjustment or possibly has a bad contact point on the wiper track.

I\'m slowly pulling my finger out, I\'ve ordered some blanking plates, I\'ve got the pulley it\'s self and I\'ve just sent Clive an email to try and get hold of some dual alternator belts!!  After this is removed what do I need to remove the 2 90 degree bends in the turbo piping?
Title: Air Pump
Post by: papercutout on December 14, 2011, 07:17:11 PM
Don\'t know if whoever it was sorted the TPS out, but I eventually did mine. The car will still occasionally (while warming up) go to 1500rpm, and drop to 800rpm or so, then back up and down dependant on clutch position, but adjust it sorted my fuelling issue. BUT I adjusted it, put TMIC on, started car, turned off, adjusted and checked, did again. Did it a total of about 6 times till it was consistently giving a 1K reading.

Halfords dude! You\'ll be in the Uk soon, just pop in and buy 2x HB800a belts!

But a tube that is 45 degrees and the right diameter is all you need I think. Prof needs to answer this really.

Okay....

Lets assume for a minute that i forgot to go to Halfords when i was in the UK, then lets assume that the HB200a belts are not available to buy online at halfords (unless you collect in store). Can anyone tell me how i can buy the correct sized belt from eBay? The \'HB800a\' code is obviously a halfords code as it doesn\'t come up on an eBay search.

Cheers guys.

About removing the two 90 degree bends.
Title: Air Pump
Post by: Prof on December 30, 2011, 11:07:28 AM
The normal double 90 intake has the 2 90 degree bends coming out of the turbo, then a bunch of pipes join it:

Biggest is the recirc air from the recirc valve
Then there is a crank case emissions feed through a small one way check valve
Then there is a small air bleed hose, I think that comes from the stock boost solenoid

So if you\'ve replaced the recirc with a blow off the largest hose can be eliminated, and if you\'ve got a boost controller and after market boost solenoid or valve, then the stock plumbing has probably gone too. This is good news - it means only the crank case emissions and it\'s silver one way valve need to be fed back into the air intake.

So what you need to end up with:

a 45 degree bend from the turbo mouth - stock turbo is I think 2.5" or 2.325" - you\'ll have to measure that with calipers. My turbo has a garret t04b front end on it, so my inlet is 3".

I then fitted a piece of straight pipe with a small T outlet - that was for the crank case return. Then you just attach you\'re AFM and air filter onto the end of that - simple in theory.

The only golden rule - between the AFM and the turbo it needs to be air tight - that\'s because the air flow is metered - so any extra air getting in will mess up the fueling.

For the diameter of the piping - I went with 3" as that\'s what comes out of the turbo and the other side of the AFM - but that still leaves you with the bottleneck on the inside of the AFM - apparently it\'s good for nearly 400BHP of air flow - so I doubt it will trouble you ;)

Your a very knowledgable man Prof! I will leave particular job alone until I\'ve got a boost controller then, I for some reason assumed it was much simpler than this and could be done once the air pump was gone. Thanks prof, once I\'ve got all this sorted I\'ll see if I can clean the thread up and make it a sticky, there is certainly a lot of helpful info on these 2 pages.

We rented a Nissan Micra when we went to Cyprus - drove it up the \'easy\' side of Troudos, then started to go down the other side - only to find they had dug up the road - we ended up \'off roading\' for about 2 miles before getting on some good tar mac and down the hairpins.  Have to say for a small runabout it coped really well with the big hill :Giggle

I quite like halloumi actually and I have to agree the troodos mountains are real drivers roads and there is some lovely views up there. I also agree with some of the other points, but the cost of loving here is huge, fine food over here is very steep, I don\'t drink wine and the bikini clad birds are only about 3 months a year. Rest of the time is miserable (but pretty nevertheless) Russian women.

I\'ve not seen any flamingoes although a few people have asked me about this, not sure where you\'d go to see them? All I\'ll say is if England had the weather it would probably beat Cyprus on nearly every point you\'ve mentioned. Biggest down sides to England are speed traps and crap weather, that\'s one thing Cyprus doesn\'t have much of - speed traps. You get the police with speed guns in the tourist area and on the motorway, but strangely enough on the real \'drivers roads\' they\'re nowhere to be seen.

Of course it makes no differebce anyway, I never speed and I\'m sure non of you guys do either :Giggle

Here is a bit of a guide in doing the job. Not sure where you get the bits from as I got mine second hand on here. They are easy enough to make though once you take the bits off you can use them as a template to make your own blanking plates. Don\'t forget to get a dual alternator pulley too or it\'ll more than likely end up with a dead engine.
