Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: Kamatari on September 20, 2011, 09:55:53 PM
Well for those who saw my thread in the chat section.. I have just got back from picking up my second FC! No pictures yet as its dark so expect some soon!

So what can i tell you from my journey back? one difference between my two is this one has the old style rear lights lol...

One thing they have in common is rust though! Now from a quick visual inspection there is looking to be quite a bit of rust in same places and new so im uncertain of the future of this car!

Now the car has a similar problem to a thread not long started about the misfire below 2.5k, the car is idling a bit low but thats easy enough to bump up but below 3k really its very jumpy and alot of backfiring which is quite loud (but i quite like it at times heh).. i\'m going to check spark plugs, leads etc as suggested and see if i can get it sorted, The engine has just over 100k on it but it had a rebuild at about 75k...

So thats that for now! Tomorrow i will get some pictures and start checking things out and we shall see how it goes!

Yes we do! :D

I\'ve got a lot of car for the price and if I used it for parts I\'ve got my moneys worth heh

I\'m hoping the missfire isn\'t too bad though be nice to have it running great

mine likes to pop a lot when off throttle at around 3k revs, and it feels a bit kangarooey when coasting in gear at low revs too, I think its just the cars, maybe slight overfuelling but just a general issue with them

If you start it up somewhere that doesn\'t have at least 23 acres of open ground to you also get watering eyes and the inevitable hacking on richness also? :Laugh

My Egi use to flood itself daily and fire flames out the exhaust on high rpm gear changes, they are good cars though if only they were a bit faster :(

If you get out the car, got to the rear and look on the boot you should see something like this...

In ways thats what this one is doing but then my other doesnt and is all smooth (apart from the idle bounce lol)

I have to admit my egi was always quite smooth to drive, but i had history of a rebuild on mine. Its worth you all giving you egi\'s a proper proper service you know, including leads as well.

Right then, just been out and snapped some piccies for you before i start looking at it properly... (although i did get the radio working)

Need to look at the oil pressure gauge as it wasn\'t moving on the way back yesterday but its got plenty of oil in....

Piictures!

And here it is...standard mx5 shot in background looking all jealous
(http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/5821/mg3796.jpg)

The first damaged wing..

And the other wing
(http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/4520/mg3798.jpg)

Close up of the wing
(http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/4977/mg3799i.jpg)

Original speakers in door cards (and boot)

Found a haynes manual!

Boot opens
(http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/3500/mg3803.jpg)

Headlights pop up
(http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/2917/mg3804s.jpg)

The big exhaust
(http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/7008/mg3805.jpg)

And it comes with a tip/bung to try and make it a bit quieter...i think ill leave it off for now
(http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/986/mg3806.jpg)

Now from the initial walk around the car from doing these pictures...the paint work is pretty bad, lots and lots of scratches, the dented wing and the rust... haven\'t looked underneath yet..

Also found out that the rear spoiler is broke :( its snapped on one of the middle mounts and i think a screw on the right has snapped... how do you get to the bolts for it? and shall i repair it or take it off?

I also have a spare drivers seat and two spare wings that came with... and whilst the wings are better than whats on now...they\'ve been repaired previously :(

I\'m going to be sticking a sale thread up soon as ive got lowered suspension, door cards, switches, headlights and gear sticks all building up (and anything else ive got laying around) now in a very very early days thing with this car...if i ended up down the breaking route, would there be much people would want?

Well came to run it and whilst it starts fine it doesn\'t seem to do its warm up right...maybe, it revs to about 1.5k and then drops to about 500 and then stutters and dies :( but if you hold the throttle to about 1k then it stays fine so I\'m assuming the idle is just set low at the moment?
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: Kamatari on September 21, 2011, 02:47:17 PM
well it looks like its kinda running the same as the other day which means its driveable... had another quick inspection round the car and giving a quick glance at the connections, finding more rust on the chassis underneath and the noticed the exhaust pipework... its had a single exit custom exhaust up to the precats....now the entire piping looks massive, atleast 4" (same size as the tip anyway) and the cat (or decat not sure yet) doesnt look like its got the piping for the secondaries...

Now do you reckon having this big piping attaching onto the standard header is going to be a reason as to why its not running right?
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: Kamatari on September 21, 2011, 02:55:26 PM
Also as the car doesnt seem like it as an accelerated warm up, where should i be looking to see if its been removed or if theres a problem?

Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!

Both, the warm up system is wank and I\'m told \'loud pipes save lives\' :Giggle
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: Kamatari on September 21, 2011, 08:46:57 PM
True :p so do you reckon it wouldn\'t be the massive pipes as to why its running off lol
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: B.Martin on September 21, 2011, 09:11:04 PM
Shouldn\'t make any difference I don\'t think mate, as i say check the usual problems first then if that doesn\'t cure it you can start worrying about other things. So plugs, leads, change oil, filter, fuel filter, stick some redex through it, do a coolant flush, may as well change airfilter (or clean it if it\'s k&n) could even clean all the intake pipe out bet it\'s full of crap. Start running it on 97-99 fuel and then post results as the other lad has same problems on the other thread :)
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: Kamatari on September 22, 2011, 11:23:06 AM
Well then I\'ve done the next journey down to visit my other rex in this car and I\'ve done about 90miles on a quarter tank although its mainly all been motorways

Upon getting here I\'ve set the tps again but that wasn\'t a problem... Having a look under the car and I\'m noticing more and more bad areas :( and I also notice the cat (or decat pipe) has a tube sticking out the side... So I check the other side and the pipe for the secondaries has been cable tied out the way  so someone has put the cat on the wrong way! The only thing is the pipes won\'t go together as they are missing a bend like the original... Any ideas?

Can get a decat off ebay for cheap i think, infact one guy had a while FC exhaust going pretty cheap the other day i forget who it was. I\'m sure i saw a full system on ebay - £100

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mazda-RX-7-RX7-FC3S-1986-1991-Turbo-4-Inch-Exhaust-/160632454477?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item256670bd4d
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: Kamatari on September 22, 2011, 10:13:14 PM
Exhaust wise I reckon I just need to swap the cat around and bodge a pipe from the cat to the old flange

In other news from driving it a bit more it seems to be loosing any power pulling off and doesn\'t like reversing... If the spark plugs where wrong types that could be a reason for it running rubbish? I\'m thinking of pulling the plugs and leads from my other to see...  Also with the oil pressure gauge not working... Any ideas what to check?
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: TiddlesRX7 on September 22, 2011, 10:27:32 PM
Think I\'d be trying all the usual things spark plugs/leads/vac leaks I\'d also take the inlet system apart and give it a good clean with some carb cleaner. Do the throttle body aswell. Maybe try the O2 sensor off your other car in it too. All the cheap things basically!

Hmmm exhaust question time, whilst looking at getting something made up to connect the split air pipe to the cat I\'ve been told there\'s an easier way to do it and that it actually reduces back pressure attaching it to there? What do you reckon?
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: Kamatari on September 23, 2011, 04:06:51 PM
Well another update...

Tried swapping the dizzy and no good, swapped the ht leads and still no good :( cleaned the grounds up aswell...

Now with the exhaust it seems as its been a complete bodge so I\'m not sure what to do with it... Think I might try and stick up a wanted thread for a stock exhaust and cat and getting rid of this big exhaust and decat... Not really planning on removing the airpump etc.. What do you guys think?
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: B.Martin on September 23, 2011, 04:11:26 PM
You might find someone on here has some crappy exhaust bits laying around if your lucky :)
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: Kamatari on September 24, 2011, 02:23:20 AM
hopefully i might be :) the exhaust on the car does look big and it\'d be nice to get the pipe connected up...

from trying to analyse the running problem of the car, when the car is completely cold, whilst it still has a bit of a misfire, it runs alright and idles nicer, then after running it around and everything heating up it starts to have its issues, so pulling off or accerlating from low revs the car doesn\'t respond but you hear a lot of backfire (well rapid gunshots) and then a burst of power. So if the backfire etc is because of unburnt fuel hitting the hot exhaust then the engine must be either receiving too much fuel or isnt sparking right? so im thinking i should be looking at the spark plugs and injectors next right? are injectors easy to remove?
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: B.Martin on September 24, 2011, 08:29:48 AM
Does it have a Cat? Sounds like it could be a blocked cat, have you cleaned out the intake set up? Thats another things that could get clogged up a bit, carefull what you use though.
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: Kamatari on September 24, 2011, 10:08:12 AM
went to an exhaust garage yesterday as i was going to get them to weld the split air pipe to the cat but when we got it in the air you just see a massive exhast and the the decat placed so that it looks like it had a pipe for the split air to go on to but it was really just an exhaust hanger which hasnt been used and the other one is jammed into the chassis lol, im not going to rule out air leaks from the two flanges on the decat though...

for this car im thinking of just putting a stock exhaust on (or as close to even if its just the cat) Oh another thing is, that screamer pipe or whatever its called that runs along side the exhaust has been chopped off pretty much at the thermal chamber, does that make any difference?
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: Lacey on September 24, 2011, 01:39:36 PM
Quote from: Kamatari;790078Think I might try and stick up a wanted thread for a stock exhaust

Had one of those up for months and nobodies posted on it, you might be better off just getting an aftermarket system since waiting for a stock one seems to be fruitless!
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: Kamatari on September 24, 2011, 10:38:07 PM
Hmmm wasn\'t really planning on buying a new exhaust for the car lol I think after trying injectors and sparks that I might just look at swapping parts and get the other finished then I\'ve just got an idle bounce to sort, may hold on to the decat incase I remove the air pump and get new headers...
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: B.Martin on September 24, 2011, 11:03:17 PM
I need to remove my airpump I think mate, I\'m told it\'s a big step forward.
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: Kamatari on September 25, 2011, 12:11:00 PM
Trying this for the FOURTH time now lol

Ive heard mixed things about removing the air pump etc and whilst its something i will probably do, really should get the car working better first..

With how the cars running at the moment, the most annoying thing is reversing the car as when you give it a bit gas it just doesn\'t move and the revs drop to cut out and you just end up sounding like a nutter trying to move backwards slowly lol

Very much considering breaking this car up though but would there be much call for parts from it?
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!

Do you have the back seats removed in there? Looks like the rear of an MX5. More pics please, what does it look like without seats ;)
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: Skifledanabit on September 26, 2011, 04:38:42 PM
Nah, that\'s just the rear backrest down, with the rear seats removed you have a mid level between the boot level and the floorpan where the amputee midgets bums would rest.

As i have two rx7\'s with issues currently.. which sounds easier to fix lol.... misfire under 2.5k rpm or a pulsing idle between 1k and 1.5k?

History of the misfire engine is that it has had a rebuild at 75k and is now at 103k

History of the pulsing idle is that the engine has about 95k on it...
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: B.Martin on October 02, 2011, 10:43:05 AM
I\'d go with the rebuilt one personally, chances are on 95k even if you fix the problem your not going to get much more life out the engine.
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: Kamatari on October 02, 2011, 11:57:31 AM
true the 95k one may not have much life in it but then it could have another 60k to go?

Although its not to say that the rebuilt engine might be in the same state.. all depends on whats causing the misfire
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: B.Martin on October 02, 2011, 12:25:15 PM
You\'d be a very very lucky boy to get 160k out of a RE, especially at the age it must have reached by now. Not impossible, but unlikely. Diagnose the low mileage problem first then the other one, one at a time is always best. Have you tried all the suggested actions on either car yet? ;)

This probably sounds like a silly question... if someone is on about "ancillaries"...what would they be refering to?
Title: 1989 RX7 FC\'d...again!
Post by: m1tch on October 04, 2011, 04:42:48 PM
Ancillaries would be things like the air pump, PS pump, alternator etc etc, if things that are bolted to the engine, but aren\'t actually the engine block :)

So october was the last time i posted here and since then not that much has happened apart from a little breaking of one of the cars...

So with christmas here, a bit of time off work(well a week) i am hoping to do my best to get the car all sorted and back on the road!

currently there is welding that needs to be done and the car is sitting at the house, i\'m going to get it transported to the unit and get the welding done, get it put back together and get it MOT\'d *fingers crossed*

Well not much has done to this for a while now :O everything has been seam sealed, just need to get the filling finished and then painted then its MOT time :D

Still need to get stuff off the rx7 thats being broken up...im thinking the easiest way to the bolts for the front bumper is to cut a section out of the wings (why not aye) Still need to swap the braided break hoses over aswell as other odd little bits... need to get a big push on soon to get everything thats needed off the rx7 and get the car scrapped

You know you can get to them by removing the wheel arch liner don\'t you? A socket and a couple of extensions normally does it. The nuts will be tight though so don\'t be suprised if they shear when you undo them.
