Title: Sleepy Eye Headlights
Post by: Tintin on June 24, 2004, 06:03:54 PM
Does anyone know of a sleepy eye headlght kit for an 7 ?

I\'ve seen them for other motas with pop up lights but can\'t find any for a 7

I even found a DIY how to for a probe , so in theory could make one myself but I\'d need a bit more info on the 7\'s wiring for the pop ups

If anyone dosn\'t know what I mean by sleepy eye , its when the lights don\'t pop up all the way , its apparently popular with drifters and can drastically improve air flow into the engine bay ( apparently )

I\'ve seen a few pictures of 7\'s with \'sleepy\' headlights in the States. One in particular had twin round lights on each side....looked fookin awesome! I\'m giving some serious thought to having a go a fabricating my own. As for finding a kit, I wouldn\'t know where to begin. You could try searching the rx7club.com forums for more info...practically every mod for the 3rd gen has been disgussed at length on there.

I\'ll see if I can find that link for the DIY probe lights again so you can have a look , if we can sus out the wiring on the pop up control we should be able to make it work

Nice one, cheers mate. I\'m about to get the front apart on mine so now would be as good a time as any to have a go. Once we got control side is figured out the rest should be plain sailing. Defo want to rig up a pair of round lights on each side.  Beats buying a set of $$ sleek lights.

Check this out! KnightSport sleepy headlights. These cost megabucks but I\'m sure something similar could be rigged up. Cheers Brian, any info would be greatly appreciated!

As MillSpeed wrote, there is one available for the RX-7.  Ive got one on mine.  Makes a noticable difference to the willingness of the engine too.  The controller is, as youd expect, a circular knob on a box that adjusts the height of the lights.  It just says Pivot on the box.

The Knightsport kit isnt really sleepy eyed, they just only open half as far.

People need to not buy the Knightsport lights ;) :p

Hoes does it work , are the headlights up all the time or just when there on ??

The lights can be had open from 0 - 100% dictated by the turn of the knob.  You set the amount desired, turn the lights on full so they open completely.  Then when you turn them off they sit at the desired angle.  To turn them off you simply turn the knob back to 0% and turn the lights on and off and hey presto, they close!  It is not possible to have the lights on and at a certain position other than fully open.  It is simply to get more air into the engine bay and look cool!  :cool

Its such a shame there isn\'t a similar way of controlling the lights when they are on , must be possible

Found this link (http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Flats/9755/sleepy.htm) for a DIY mod for a probe

If there was some way of doing something like this  on the 7 that would be what I\'m after , add a pivot control box and I\'de have total control over my lights :cool

ooh sailor !! :o

as far as I can grasp it the unit being sold by Edge will allow you to control the height of the lights when they are off only

I\'m after a kit that allows me to adjust them while there either off or on , hopefully Brian will be able to find out some info about the one on the mota he sold recently , failing that I\'ll keep digging

...cool,cool!!

..think i might be ordering one from edge very soon....i\'ll look out for Brians reply but i\'m not too bothered if they work with the lights on or off...would they not \'attract\' the attention of the police though if they were on, but only half way up say???

cheers

I dont think any company would be silly enough to allow for adjustment whilst lights are on.  Its impractical, unsafe and illegal.

Just a quick word of warning, if you are going for the \'lazy eye\' watch out for heat damage to any plastic sections directly in front of the lamp. (If ur sticking with standard lamps that is)
I know someone who did the same mod to his TII and managed to warp the plastic nose on his car.

good point brett , never even considered that

I agree with eyedee that it would be unsafe to drive in the dark with the lights in the \'lazy eye\' position , I was interested in it as an asthetic thing and realy used for driving properly

...just ordered my sleepy eye headlight control from \'the EDGE\'...can\'t wait \'til it arrives..just need to work on my auto electrical knowledge...should be fun!!

Anyone fitting the Pivot RHU-M kit to the RX7???any advice??

Cheers!

Marc

Just thinking...wouldnt it be cool if you could make one of the lights pop up and wink???!!!!how cool would that be...maybe with my limited electrical knowledge i\'ll do it by accident!!!!!!
