From listening to that ford advert about one of their new cars (didnt pay too much attention) but i remembered about them saying about the active grill that it has which closes at higher speeds to increase mpg which lead me to do a tiny bit of googling about it which lead me to the AE86 having it as one of the option kits (and various other cars having this) but from how the AE86\'s one worked is that the grill is always closed and is hooked up to a thermostat which opens the grill when needed....
Now as reading threads on other sites about trying to get the best mpg\'s from the rex, could something like this work? i can think of manual and electric ways to mimic it but then whats the point if it\'s not going to help?#
thoughts?
I\'m not saying its not possible on the rex but its not something I\'d like to chance myself as heat is one of the big killers of the rotary. Just my 2p worth.

I know you don\'t want me to say this, bit of you want good mpg get a diesel golf. There was one guy on here that mapped his rx on the road and got impressive mpg figures from it, that is your best option if your determined to get better mpg. Active grill could fail followed quickly by the engine, not great idea I recon but could always try it. I can\'t imagine it would make much difference though as the only grill is the bumper mouth, this is to send air to the oil cooler which is very important in a RE. So blocking that off is I\'ll advised I think.
Could always be wrong.
I wouldnt wanna do anything that could increase engine bay heat
I have increased my MPG, I have a Volvo V40 1.9D as the daily :) if you are worried about mpg on the rx7, best thing to do is to help the engine breathe, so intake and exhaust, but blocking the radiator is a rather silly idea.
Ok then looks like I\'ll abandon that idea then lol
what intake upgrades are recommended?
depends how far you want to go... uprated panel filter is the first step, cold air induction (with box and direct cold air feed) is a step further, bonnet vents, the list goes on and on really.
Apparently the double bends in the air filter to turbo connection are very restrictive, Prof knows 100% more about this than me. When he finds this thread i\'m sure he will explain to you what i mean :)
Is there a solution to get this bendy bit straight and still getting the air filter to somewhat the same location, or without doing major surgery on the car?
That and a proper exhaust like RB would kick the car in the butt. A proper IC as well, cheap solutions for more power :D
Pretty sure 1 or 2 people on here can help with this, give it time :)

Here is the details for the intake system - you need to remove the airpump and run a dual alt pulley/ilder pulley as the reason why its bent like that is to get around the air pump:

Check the other details on FC3Spro, there are a lot of good mods and tweeks you can do.
Removed air pump, but even though, it would still have to go in an angle into the turbo. But anywho, that is my problem, but if anyone got pics of a good solution, yell.
However, active grill, you sure AE86 got that? I have never heard about that before.

Yep, but apparently opened at higher temps

Friend got a 4A-GZE Levin, but he got the full plastic grill with fog lamps. Looks better than that imo. And works just as good, his engine never overheats with stock rad for the 124hp 4A-GE on a 170hp GZE. The hole in the grill is the size of 1/3 of the flap on that grill.
However, if ANYone got pics of the S-pipe straightened out in any way, post! :D
Prof might be able to help with this. Sure he has fixed this problem.
Profs intake consists of a turbo, coupler, pipe, coupler, air flow meter, HKS filter lol
Get him to stick some pics up for Jimmy.
i dont see how it helps mpg??? as air can travel threw the bumper then if you afectivly put a sheet of plastic in front the air gets pushed against it then it has to redirect round the bumper and some air would surly get trapped???
i know it must help as on top gear (i know not the most accurate program) hamster did that spped run and in one run he pupmed the tyres up and was just of 150 or what ever his target was and on the next he covered all the grill up and hit his targed but he did have to rip it off asap as his car was over heating
but im sure for the extra weight you add againtst the mpg there wouldnt be much in it between having the system and not.???
