Yep, there\'s even a hole through the bonnet... all I need to do is find a waterproof air filter (i\'m thinking pipercross foam filter) and cut a hole in the top of the airbox and mesh it, may need to drill some drain holes in the sides too.

question is, does anyone have a better idea of a waterproof/resistant filter?

I think itg are supposed to be good?

My opinion is it would look better on the headlight, good fabrication work though :)

I like the idea. I\'d toyed with it myself a while back. The only difference I was thinking of was not to cut the bonnet bit out. I was gonna cut it on 3 edges under the scoop and fold it down into the filter box. That way any water should go over/around the filter that sits under the fold. Does that make sense? Its still early!
Good work that man, keep us updated with results.

Yeah, it makes sense, but I would have thought that would defeat the object of direct air flow, I\'ve left about 30-40mm on both front and back edges of the hole and folded those down to help with air and (hopefully) water flow, but I\'m thinking the foam filter with the gunk motoX riders stick on theirs to catch all that dirt should do it well enough as long as I keep on top of maintaining it.

True, But I think I\'d still rather it was shielded slightly myself. Thats just personal prefferance though, plus I\'m lazy so I\'d soon get bored of cleaning the filter!
Like I said up there ^^^ though keep us updated with your findings. Do you have an inlet air temp reading for before and after?

I would definatly put a shield over the relays etc where that intake will dump water onto, I was thinking about doing this and then sectioning off part of the under bonnet to make a cold air box, im just staying with the headlight vent for the time being though. Might just run the turbo out the bonnet :rollin

Also, have you checked that will pass an MOT? It probably won\'t:

The body and vehicle structure
Is free from excessive corrosion or damage in specific areas and there are no sharp edges likely to cause injury.

Yup, it will, ran it by my MOT tester, he says it\'s fine as the vent doesn\'t have any extruding sharp edges, the vent edges have been folded over to ensure that

Awesome, I had to check if my FD rims were ok as they were about 2mms wider than the arches lol don\'t want any excuse for a fail lol I guess turbo compressors are rounded, should be ok to run that out the bonnet

there is no stipulation in the mot regulations for wheels to be covered by arches but it is illegal and you can be charged by the police

sharp edges only refer to the sides of a car when a pedestrian could brush up against it and get injured

The tyres do, the wheels don\'t, the arches have to cover the area of the tyre that has tread, something about spray suppression.

The sharp edge rule is also why cars no longer have popup lights and why cars are now much higher at the front due to this (the popup lights allow for the lights to be at the legal height when in use)

no they dont, thats my job! for example quite a lot of kit cars on full lock foul the suspension arms to get over this problem you remove the wheel arch and its a pass

headlights can be at any height you simply adjust the beam tester to match the centre of the headlight

Isn\'t there a minimum legal height for a headlight to be though?

Post by: Skifledanabit on September 15, 2011, 10:38:36 PM
Shouldn\'t think so, as long as they don\'t blind oncoming cars, take the ariel atom for instance, aren\'t they pretty low? I thought you could have any level lights as long as they don\'t blind oncoming drivers. Although, I guess a certain amount of common sense is used too.

Oh, yeah, I\'m pretty sure the tyre tread has to be within the arches to be legal, it\'s not spray, it\'s a catch risk. Removing the arches for MOT is a separate issue I think. As long as whilst the vehicle is in motion the tread is covered, it\'s ok.

yea it will pass the mot with the no covers on the wheels or if they stuck out 6" but you can be charged by the police for them not being covered, stupid i know but its the law!

here is another weird 1, if your seatbelt in your car doesnt work properly or it has cuts in it and it would fail an mot put a child seat in and it will pass cause during an mot test you are not allowed to touch a child seat for safety reasons!

there is no minimum height for an mot but when the centre of headlights is above 850mm they have to be aimed lower to pass the mot

I think the best MOT \'advisory\' I have had is \'passenger seat missing\' its was like....really? I haddn\'t noticed :D
Title: My New Experiment...
Post by: wolfie1 on September 16, 2011, 07:44:20 PM
to be honest some of the mot is just mental! a lot of advisories just have to be put in just to cover yourself.
i take it your seat belt catch wasnt part of the seat then? cause it would have failed its test for not having the catch!

As can be seen from this photo below, decatting a car will increase power, works best on a turbocharged car do to the large restriction the cat causes.

Just got it through today, I\'ll pick up some oil later on, but first I\'ve got to go to Wandsworth and then Putney, anyone on the area, keep an eye out.

riiiight, had a little drive today, I must admit, it didnt feel like too much of a difference, but it does seem like its smoother to drive, its a bit steadier at idle too. but until I do a proper drive in it and pay attention to all the noises and details, I can\'t say if it has really been worth the effort.
