Title: Gearbox diffrences?
Post by: Grizzly on September 12, 2011, 10:30:46 PM
Hi all.

Does anyone know if the Gear box in a UK spec fd is the same as a Jap Import?

Basically in a nut shell we need to replace/rebuild a box in a UK car and we\'re weighing up the options. Its obviously going to be cheaper to get a good Import box but i thought i had read some where they where different??

Any ideas?

Depends what year JDM box you are getting....

The 5th gear is different on the JDM gearbox\'s which is shorter than the UK/US box and from 94 onwards the synchros were strengthened on all boxes but other than that i don\'t know :)

Is it true the diff ratio\'s are not the same between the jap-uk spec so screws up 5th?

Dont know whether it screws up 5th gear to be honest but yeah diff ratio\'s are different... Jdm cars had 4:3 diff whereas the uk and us cars have 4:1 diff so making the gears longer in effect... Obv auto\'s were all 3.9 ratios... Post 94 mazda changed the synchros of 3rd and 5th gears to make them stronger on all boxes....
