Title: Rotor Ornament?
Post by: B.Martin on September 10, 2011, 09:34:22 PM
Anyone else used a busted rotor as like a wall display instead of a pic? I recon 3 would look awesome in my front room, how much does a busted rotor fetch? I\'m assuming you CAN still polish up a busted rotor and make it look new again like? Thoughts anyone?

Im going to do something with the scrap rotor from my engine - polishing it up sounds like hassle tbh, i was thinking about a sparkle powdercoat and turn it into a table or something.

The rotor surface supporting a circular or rotary shaped pane of toughened glass?

It\'s the actual triangle shaped rotors I think would look best. Mitch has a good idea, as does Fez. Apparently there is a guy in pafos that rebuilds RE so perhaps I\'ll see if he has a few spare, surely a busted rotor can\'t be worth much?

to be honest thats why i bought a busted engine

1 - to actually see how it all works and fits together
2 - see if i can polish something of it and use it for a clock or a paperweight

Difficult to polish cos they\'re steel and the machining marks resist taking a brilliant level of polish unless you\'re willing to spend years on it or have some industrial orbiters to hand, but if you keep them inside and give them a once-over with Pledge every so often they keep their shine pretty well.

Rather like Liam, I seem to have a surfeit of rotors and housings, some more decorative than others

I\'ve almost got a whole engine worth of parts that one day I\'ll get round to polishing up and using like this. Could do a engine coffee table type thing :D

Yeah i remember seeing those V8 coffee tables and thought they were the coolest things going, i almost brought a crappy V6 engine to try it myself. Imagine a rotary one would be cool as fook, especially if you made it a 3 rotor one ;)

All I\'d need is an E shaft as I\'ve got a polished plenum, TB, and LIM to use for it as well

I think, if you were going to do a coffee table one - a sectioned four rotor would be much more interesting

for example - x4 housings separated by a housings width. rotors held in the housings with a couple of cheeky and invisible spot welds etc

On a winner then - you\'d be left with using points on the rotor housings to mount a pane of toughened glass though

You could even weld 2 shafts together so it looks like a 4 rotor one and then use some long bolts to join it all together.

ive one rotor i have on my desk as an ornament. heres a few pics

sprayed it gloss black.

i have 2 others i will do something with. i plan on spraying one gloss white and polishing the other. im then going to arrange them black polished white with a clock in the centre of all three with different time zones. something like this- east coast american time, irish/uk time, japan time so ill have usa, uk, japan as in the way you would see them while looking at a flattened globe.

just havnt time or money spare to do it but will get around to it sometime. also it will be good practice to learn how to polish.

There was a bust rotor & housing on ebay a couple of months ago, think they went for about £40 each

Ive always fancied the idea of making a small coffee table out of a couple of used housings & rotors, something like they have on top gear, the v12 block

Yeah i wanted to make a V - engine table like that, but even the blocks are quite expensive!

Post by: - Fezcat - on September 19, 2011, 08:17:48 AM
Nah they\'re not lol! I bought a complete Pre HE engine for £150 about 9 months ago!

And yesterday there was a complete 1uz-fe that sold on ebay, ecu, manifolds, gearbox, loom the lot for - £155

engines are cheap - stripped blocks all look the same imo :)

Yeah but i wanted one for peanuts ;)

you could have stripped both engines and doubled your money whilst keeping the block, easily.

got to spend money to make money ;)

Yeah, i\'m in Cy now though and my house is fully furnished so i can\'t really be bothered to spend money on furniture. However if a came accross a cheap block i\'d still be 100% tempted.
