As per title really, want to give the fd a service but not sure what plugs to use. Car is pretty stock maybe upto 300bhp, also anything else ignition wise worth changing or upgrading,
Thanks Dave.
I\'d probably use NGK9\'s on the leading and NGK10\'s on the trailing
NGK9eqp all round,
If you need some, I have 9\'s in the platiniums and 9/10/11 in iridium.
Drop me an email for more info
Maybe a new set of ignition leads?
And if you have got the cash and can find one an hks twin power, and harness adapter, which gives you a better stronger spark.
i\'ve been using bur9eq all round for about the same power level as you with no problems. i wouldn\'t go to 10s, they may be too cold.
What make leads are good or should I stick with stock Mazda set ?
Also will keep eyes open for hks twin power. Also where\'s best place to buy a bosch 044 pump ?
I got my Bosch 044 pump, magnecor leads and twin power from http://www.mazdarotaryparts.com/ speak to Clive or Lisa and they will sort you out. They may even have a twin power on the shelf if you are lucky or I\'m sure Clive will be more than welcome to help source one for you.
9\'s are fine for 300. Also, you won\'t need a twin power - stock ignition is perfect at that level. If you get ignition misfires, then getting a Twin Power is addressing the symptoms, not the cause, which will either be leads or coil packs (or plugs, if you haven\'t changed them). Stock ignition (including leads and packs) was fine at 340 on mine. 360 needed 10\'s and 11\'s, but coils and leads were still fine.
For leads it appears genuine Mazda, NGK, or Magnecor are some of the best bets.
Do that, and do the cheap 12v rewire, and you\'re good to go. Twin Power is belt and braces/over engineering imho.
I would have got Mazda leads to replace mine, but Magnecors were cheaper.
I agree with sih, but I was just stating an option for ignition upgrade which he was did ask for options.
A change of fuel filter may be a wise step too if it hasn\'t been done?
excellent guys thanks for all the info, will hold fire on the hks twin power for nowas they quite expensive and not a real must have. Will look for some new leads and plugs will compare prices, also i changed fuel filter about 18months ago but only done 3-4k miles so guess that should be ok for now.
checked out mazda rotary parts, ngk 9\'s £33 + vat magnecor leads £50 + vat seems pretty good to me, last service i did i used mazda dexelia 5w30 oil is that a good choice ??? if so will order some more.
good Gonzo :D
For me I prefer to use RoyalPurple 10w40 but oils, many people have different opinions :Yawn
I also use NGK 9 in Lead and TRAIL. I think it is the right choice for my actual upgrade :yes
Have ordered the ngk 9\'s and set of magnecors from mazda rotary parts £108 all in.
Not heard of royal purple before....... anybody else had dealings with it ? Whats the oil like on mrp, prolong or something ??? £45 including oil filter....
consider that you have a turbo engine, the oil is very stressed out by the turbine, the 5w30 for me is too low viscosity :)
Trust me :D
Royal Purple, The only fully synthetic oil recommended for rotary engines.
feel also the opinion of others, for me I always want the best :Giggle
Mazda recommends that only mineral oil be used in rotary engines. Any half decent 10 - 40 mineral oil will be fine. I use millers oils as they are a local supplier to me and do the stuff at a decent price.
So if i go for a 10w 40 mineral oil of any good reputable brand i should be ok, if so i will order some today and get the service done this weekend
Yep...... And change your oil filter whilst your at it:Thumbsup!:Thumbsup!
tbh, i think most modern fully-synths are ok to use these days. there was a great post by the guy who runs Opie Oils talking about all of that, might be worth digging it up.
This is the thread with links to why Mazda recommend mineral oil only
http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29436
However TBH if your car originally has mineral oil in it, stick with it, if you have used synthetic oil for some time then stick with that.
I do think it is fine to use synthetic oils for use as premix, better lubrication for the seals and it\'s doesn\'t smoke as much
Cheers for that i will check link out and give it a read .
Wow I never knew the oil debate was so intense !!! I have used the 5w30 dexelia oil for the past 2 yrs and have been recommended to use it before, and i guess that if its an oil sold by mazda for the rotary engine then it should be pretty good stuff, but I could be wrong.
Right i now have, ngk 9\'s x4, magnecor kv85,fuel filter, oil filter and valvoline 10w40 mineral oil which is recommended by jimmys and many other rotary builders that i found on the net. hope to fit this little lot at the weekend.
Well done, hopefully it will give your car a new lease of life
I have yet to look but are the stock leads all different in length as are the kv85\'s, just a thought on getting them back in the same order ?
Cheers Dave.
I do have a bit of a splutter when the second turbo kicks in at the moment which is being a little intermittent, hoping that changing the plugs and leads will cure problem, if it doesnt would I have to start looking to changing the coils ???
If you still have problems, then you must change the coils, to exclude problems that can come from Spurk plugs and Wires or Coil.
are maintenance, should be changed even if you did not have problems :)
