Title: Got that terrible sinking feeling
Post by: Skifledanabit on August 17, 2011, 11:50:04 PM
Just drove back from a mates, noticed an ominous metal vs metal noise emanating from the engine bay at just over 3k revs when accelerating...

Pretty sure it\'s time for a rebuild... What do you guys think?

I think I get that same sinking feeling when I try to swim. :Laugh

Hope somebody more in the know can help, but i would have thought a metal on metal \'noise\' would be more likely to do with the wheels or drive system, as you shouldn\'t be able to hear much from inside the block itself, especially while in the cab?

Could be any number of things, two most likely are tips or clutch failure, if it was brakes/wheels etc it would happen whether accelerating or coming off, I\'m hoping it\'s clutch, I\'ve got a spare, tips would be a complete PITA.

I\'ll rev it up tomorrow at a standstill, if it\'s clutch, it won\'t squeal, if it does, brown trousers time.

Can you post a vid with good sound ?

Maybe we could work out what it is.

Don\'t rule out less expensive problems like fubar alternator bearing ;)

Yeah fingers crossed for you mate. If it was tip related would it not happen at all RPM\'s? Hopefully its a simple fix.

Would the engine not be running like crap with imminent tip failure?

I haven\'t had a chance to check yet today, the alternator was refurbed in march so it shouldnt be that, I\'ll try and get a video but I doubt you\'d be able to hear it, its quite faint but noticeable

Not something daft like a wheel bearing is it?

They were tightened up last MOT

Power steering fluid level ?  - I had some wierd noises out of mine recently and it was lower than the bottom of the dip stick -sort of metallic high pitched scratching - but only when steering.

I\'ll give that a check, just given it a rev out of gear, held it at the point, no sound, must be drivetrain related or hubs maybe, very slight noise in 2nd, noticeable in 3rd

Syncros going in the box? Or might just be something that is vibrating on the top of the engine bay/firewall when the engine is under load?

Unless its turbo related at that RPM?

Won\'t be turbo related on Skiffy\'s EGI, silly Mitch ^_^

Well that rules out one expensive problem then :Giggle

Might just be a rattling heatshield then :)

One other \'weird\' rattle I have - is the heater system.

When it\'s on demist / cabin heating button and all the way up on the blower it can make a rattling noise - which varies with speed.  If you drop the blower speed to below 2/3 or select another air flow option it stops.

I presume one of the flapper valves for the climate system is lose and rattles at speed / vibration during acceleration.

But it actually sounds like a metal on metal scraping, almost like there\'s a stone or something trapped under the brake pad...

Not a lightly seized caliper? Just guessing though.

Nah if it was a siezed caliper it wouldn\'t be RPM and gear specific :/

Does the engine still pull cleanly?

Yeah, still pulls fine

Hopefully not, had a terrible dream last night where it was accelerating and just not going anywhere... Will get my mechanic to have a little look at it

What does a nackered drive shaft sound like on an RX7?
Title: Got that terrible sinking feeling
Post by: papercutout on August 23, 2011, 10:05:40 PM
Clunk, clunk, clunk. The same as a knackered driveshaft on any car. Also, the sound will come from behind you, being rwd and all ;)

My 106 used to go through driveshafts like no bodies business!! One time the fubarred drie shaft made a right racket !!

A place called star in Chadwell heath, opposite sainsburys, think it was about £70/80, I was desperate lol

To carry on... The dash lights now flicker every so often, had a bit of a moment where they went out altogether, all the interior lights in fact, exteriors were ok, any idea on that?

Percussion maintenance normally fixes my dash lights when they go out.

Lacey likes this method, but calls it percussive maintenance. :)
