Title: My 1989 FC Vert Turbo II
Post by: ali303 on August 17, 2011, 09:02:05 PM
Hi all!

Well as you can probably tell by my post count (or lack thereof) I\'m pretty new here but heard it was the best place to come to for all things rotary!

I\'ve been a Honda guy for the last year or so but when my mate got banned from driving I offered to buy the car he\'d owned for the last couple of months, and by the looks of it it\'s one the forum\'s already familiar with!

And some pictures I took when my mate had it the other month:

And the pic of it I found on here:

When I bought it the other day it came with Kei Office coilovers, R33 GTR wheels, Turbosmart boost gauge and a nice and subtle welded diff out back... Since then I\'ve added a few interior things I had lying around (see pic above): my Momo Monte Carlo steering wheel (ignore the Opel horn button, I need a new one!) as it\'s a bit of a squeeze me getting in and out and the flat face as opposed to a dished wheel really helps (I\'m 6\'4"...). Also my subtle bubble shifter as I couldn\'t stand the standard banana shaped one.

It\'s very tatty in places but I won\'t be touching anything up until the winter as this is my first RWD car (I\'m 20) and as it will be taken on the odd drift day very soon some sort of exterior damage is inevitable. In a few months I\'ll start sorting it though, first job being some new front wings!

As for further modifications, I wouldn\'t mind some split wheels for daily driving (and keep the R33 ones for drifting), maybe some Image ones with gold centres and a polished lip, like these:

Other than that a nice exhaust would be good so I can get some noise back in my life (I\'m used to a Honda + Spoon exhaust so I\'m getting withdrawl symptoms!)

As I\'m completely new to the rotary scene any general servicing/maintenance advice would be greatly appreciated! I\'m aware of the basic dos and don\'ts but I\'d like to replace a few of the consumables for good measure (filters, fluids etc)...plus it definitely needs some new windscreen wiper blades if anyone can suggest any!

Thanks for looking :)

Welcome mate, good to see you\'ve joined! I didn\'t realise you were so young!

Consumables - //www.mazdarotaryparts.com

I use cheapo 10/40 oil. And my fuel filter is from a Z32 300zx, as it\'s bigger and much cheaper.

Exhaust - I have a 3" cat back single exit thing you can have for £40 if you come collect (or come to Rotorstock this Saturday) and if you combine it with a decat, it\'ll certainly keep you happy noise wise!

What\'s up with the front wings then, besides what I can see right at the front? R33 GTR wheels are expensive tbh mate, I\'d love to have a set to run occasionally! You\'d be able to sell them and pick up something with better fitment easily, e.g. on SXOC there\'s a set of Manarays, 10J ET25 for £350! (10J is a little much on the front of an FC, but just about doable with some work)

Haha the height does fool some people! Was trying to find you on Facebook via the Lowlife page after Awesomefest to ask you a few things but didn\'t realise you were on here!

Thanks for the link, I\'ll have a ganders :Thumbs-up

Sounds good to me dude, I\'ll have to let you know if I\'m going or not as to be honest I completely forgot and am pretty skint since buying the car!

They\'re completely rotten underneath so they\'re hardly secure haha, they don\'t look salvageable!

Oh are they!? I was under the impression they\'d be fairly cheap as they\'re OEM wheels, these ones are pretty good nick too so I\'ll have to look into that. Definitely fancy something dishier and girthier like yours for daily use :cool

You should be able to find me on the Lowlife page! My name is Ben in real life. Were you at Awesomefest then? In the cab? (I didn\'t see the \'vert anywhere!)

Yup, I hope you have a decently job, petrol is a killer - £1.44 p/litre of v-power here, and 28l = between 100 and 120 miles for me :(

Oh well, more to life than minty wings - learn to drift it first, then replace them after they\'ve been knocked! Feel free to sell them to me cheap, you know, £100 or so ;)

Ah I\'ll have a look :) Yeah I was but in my Civic, I was looking at buying this car at the time and after seeing yours I decided I had to have an FC in my life! That\'s why I came over and eventually asked to sit in it just to make sure I could fit! :P

It\'s pretty decent but I\'ve got my own house to consider as well so financially it\'s probably not my best idea ever to get a rotary but meh, the car\'s fun and that\'s what matters! It\'s 139.9 at the Shell round the corner from mine and so far about £15 has got me 50 miles, and that\'s been mostly sensible driving!

Welcome to the club, looks a good base car for mods as well. I think there are more verts about now days than there are coupes! Keep us updated on the progress, if your going to be drifting it there are some mods that are recommended although I can\'t remember off top of my head what they all are. If you keep an eye out for DtheBuk, he\'s the guy who knows all about drifting FC\'s.

Best of luck and I\'m sure if you\'ve got any problems someone on here is bound to be able to help.

Thanks mate, I\'ll have to have a word with him if I see him around on here.

Going to be ordering some more spacers at some point to sort out the wheel fitment a little better. I\'m not after anything silly but the rears look a little lost in the arch with the amount of camber they have. An extra 5/10mm should do the trick I think.

The welded diff is also really starting to annoy me. It was a good laugh in the wet last night but getting in and out of my drive (it\'s a tight squeeze) and the cramped office car park is such an effort due to it binding up. A pretty aggressive LSD would be ideal if anyone can suggest anything?

When I get chance the brakes need some attention as well, they don\'t feel too strong at the moment! Also the handbrake is pretty poor so I\'ll be taking a look at that soon. Good thing I\'ve ordered the FC Haynes manual! :Laugh

The handbrakes aren\'t great. I can lock mine in the wet, but it\'s more effort than you want to use for entry. While you can probably set it up so it works better, I\'m just going to fit the hydro I\'ve had sitting around for years at some point.

Me and DtheB have had similar levels of experience drifting these = not a lot! Regarding LSD - just man up, I\'ve had a welder for the last year and a half :p And almost 2 years before that in the E30!

Didn\'t realise it was you that came over and sat in there. Fair play then! You were with the guy with the MX5.

Yeah a hydro would be epic, would like one at some point but would ideally like to leave the interior as intact as possible.

Haha it\'s just such a pain reversing into my drive, was wondering if the active rear toe setup would be affecting it though?

Yeah I was with Seb with the pretty cool Mx-5, we were just sat outside our tents like "oh shiii\' that\'s the FC vert on banded steelies!" and thought we\'d come and have a look!

Going to be ordering quite a bit of stuff soon, also been looking at removing the active rear-toe setup which can be done with a set of solid bushes of some description I believe?

PS took some more pictures:

Ah that\'s them, let me know if you find any! As soon a I can get rid of my old Civic I\'ll have a decent amount of money to spend on important things, drifting things and cool things. Really want an exhaust system like yours as I love the twin pipes and the relatively small size of them, not such a fan of big single exits on FCs unless they\'ve got a lairy rear bumper.

Thanks mate, I\'ll have a look into it. By the looks of it it doesn\'t seem like a job I\'d be too happy to tackle on my driveway!

Quote from: B.Martin;783764It looks like your vert is in very good condition paintwork wide :D

Haha thanks dude, it\'s not great though! Going to give it some abuse while the weather\'s still half decent and then sort all of the bodywork out over the winter.

In other news, the petrol bills...aren\'t great! Over the last week it\'s done 15 mpg on average...but in all honesty, I couldn\'t care less. The amount of attention this car gets everywhere it goes is unreal, which is something considering it\'s pretty much silent thanks to the OEM exhaust! I went to an Mx-5 meet in it earlier and it got a silly amount of attention, and that\'s not including pretty much everyone who drove past on the motorway (was doing 60, economy y0 :P) craning their necks to take a better look. I just love this car.

I\'ll ask the other Lowlife lads, although out of the 4 of us, only me and the other Ben have Jap cars! Zi\'s Z4 does look awesome though, but Jasons Audi sucks balls!

If we do go, feel free to join us Lowlife guys, of course we could just put a shout out on Lowlife FB to see if anyone wants to join. There\'re certainly plenty of people running our stickers now!

Well some good news, I finally sold my other Civic so savings account aside I\'ve got around £800 to spend on getting the car a bit better prepared for a couple of upcoming drift days.

I need to get a pair of wheels just for drifting so I can keep the R33 ones for getting to work and back and whatnot without having to worry about running bald rubber and getting a telling off. Other than that I need to replace the brakes as they\'re hardly tip top, but after that I\'m a bit stumped. Could do with some new seats, I like the leather ones but they\'re not exactly supportive for me and I don\'t even fit them really. Then maybe I need to look at power upgrades...oh yeah, and definitely the DTSS eliminators!

Any suggestions welcome!

Make sure you are running a larger radiator with electric fans on a switch BEFORE you do any drifting, else the engine will overheat and you will have to do a soft seal rebuild, also make sure your fueling is up to scratch and if you are going to be drifting it all the time, make sure you have underdrive pulleys to avoid cavitation of the water pump and OMP failure

Or just fit an aftermarket water temp gauge and keep an eye on it like me?!

I run aftermarket boost, water and oil temp gauges.

DTSS elim bushes - I\'ve just got a set off someone on here (wooo, finally!) and it set me back £40, so just put up a \'wanted\' and have a hunt. From memory \'Mick Choi\' had some for sale. Don\'t know how reliable he is though.

Priorities:
Welded diff (or lsd if you can sort one)
DTSS elim bushes
Lowered/stiffened - message driftworks regarding their old stock HSD \'black\' coilovers that were being sold for £500
Aftermarket gauges

Low priority - would be nice, but not necessary:
Bucket seat
More lock - lock spacers or knuckle modification (http://fc3spro.com/TECH/DRIFT/DCOMPARE/dcompare.html)

Search ebay for a motordrive seat, or something else equally skinny as you\'re like me, but taller. Then you\'ll probably need a subframe to fit. Unfortunately this\'ll probably mean a bride seat subframe = expensive. Talk to L18M on here. (if you remember, I have mis-matched seats. I also had to chop and weld a bride subframe to fit my seat :( )

Post by: ali303 on August 28, 2011, 06:14:38 PM
Yeah I think I remember you saying the stock water gauge especially is pretty rubbish? Could do with an oil temp one as well just to be safe and to look cool (three gauges y0, might mount them above the glovebox or something gangsta).

The welded diff is in at the moment. Will do the job for now but I really really want a proper LSD or something, parking in this thing is a horrible experience; everything sounds like it\'s about to break!

I\'ll hunt down some DTSS bushes but they\'re definitely something I don\'t want to fit myself after reading up on them and how much of a pain it is to do.

It\'s stupidly stiff at the moment to be honest, would the HSDS be a huge improvement on the Kei Office coilies I have already?

Haha I might need a slightly wider seat, yours almost broke my hips! Fixed bucket would be cool but I almost fancy some Bride Brix Graduations, just so the car still remains a little pimptastic haha. Girls and fixed buckets don\'t really go (from experience haha).

That was an interesting article actually, very interesting read. Basically says if you want to start drifting, don\'t get an FC haha. Ah well, looks a million times cooler than an S-body!

the FD diffs fit in the TII housings, I know that there are a few FCs running the FD torsion diffs, on the up side the FCs don\'t break and blow up like FDs lol FlikstRR drifted an FC in the BDC, I think Timmy has the shell now?

Actually oil temp is a very good gauge to get...

If you run out of water - there may not be any water going past the thermostat so the sender won\'t register any problem for a while - and that\'s where an oil temp gauge comes in.  The oil is always circulating the engine, and is as important as the coolant system for cooling the engine.  A temp gauge monitoring oil temp will show up problems of over heating quicker than an aftermarket water gauge.

The stock water gauge is basically just measuring the temperature of the block - which is why it\'s so unreactive !
Title: My 1989 FC Vert Turbo II
Post by: m1tch on August 28, 2011, 10:34:20 PM
Yeah I have an oil temp gauge, its much more accurate than a water temp gauge as the oil is directly heated by the engine, wheras the water is indirectly heated, plus if you have an uprated radiator you are going to have 6-7 litres of water to heat up before the \'temperature\' increases, the engine would have overheated waaaay before it registers on the gauge, infact if the stock gauge rises above about half the engine has already overheated.

Yeah it is. Personally I\'m going to relocate my water gauge to the clocks, like my boost gauge at some point. Boost gauge 1 side, water temp the other - means I can keep an eye on it, as it\'s pretty critical. Or I\'ll mount it by the little thingy in the middle of the dash, and when I get a wideband, mount the AFR gauge on the side of the clocks.

That\'s 2 boxes ticked already, diff and coilies. The HSD\'s should be a little softer (or at least, much more adjustable - adjustable damping, ride height and spring preload), but it\'s a big expenditure. I forgot you had coilovers already - I\'ve been chatting to a different guy on email about cutting springs and got confused!

Yeah, slightly wider than mine, and try to get something with side mounts or that\'ll fit a Bride seat rail, unlike mine. Bride\'s are SO expensive though!

Then go drifting! Or go drifting inbetween mods too :p

With regards to the AFR gauge, its probably not much use whilst drifting, it should be something that is used whilst mapping, I don\'t think its something you are going to be able to check whilst going sideways lol

Also with regards to cooling, I know Phil had electric fans on both the radiator AND intercooler as when going sideways there isn\'t any proper airflow going through the front, the fans were attached to a switch so that they were running 100% of the time during a run.

Sounds like a good idea dude!

Yeah the Kei Offices are hardly forgiving or very adjustable to be honest, HSDs would be nice in the not so distant future though.

To be honest, as much as it pains me to say it...fake fixed Brides can be had for £250...might be an option if I can\'t find something better at a decent price.

Very good point, I\'ll be sure to look into that as it sounds like a perfectly reasonable idea!

Got my new gauges. The boost gauge was mounted into the little pocket thing that sat above the radio but obviously there wouldn\'t be enough room for three.  I ripped it out, stuck the radio in the upper position (want a radio with a flip-up screen screen at one point so I\'d rather it covered the heater controls than the gauges!).

Just plonked the gauges into the space to see how it\'d all look, need to get a holder or make one up...and get them wired up of course! Would prefer them to be black as well but ah well.

Just going to use the boost, oil temp and water temp ones for now, I\'ll eventually get round to sorting out the air/fuel ratio one if it becomes necessary.

Thanks dude. Haha, I don\'t really know to be honest as I need to to know more about them before coming up with a price...although of course this will be when I eventually get some HSDs or something which won\'t be in the next couple of weeks!

I\'ll get some more nice ones soon, just not completely happy with the exterior at the moment. The rear wheels especially need some attention from some spacers, and consequently the arch will need looking at as a result. Also need to rectify the front lip (or lack thereof) situation as well.

I took the car out with a few mates to a big open space with a couple of cones as they were bored of flying into roundabouts at 60mph + and pulling on the hyrdo and just wanted to go back to basics and practice their accuracy. Granted the surface was a little tricky but a few of them had a go in my car and just couldn\'t get it to work...they\'d get halfway round before the car would just develop a mind of its own and just spin them round (I\'m presuming this is the DTSS, as on bigger corners/roundabouts it\'s actually been quite good!).

These guys aren\'t beginners either, seeing as one of them is a drifting instructor and the other is equally as good...and both are used to doing this:

It was a bit discouraging to be honest, and it did make me wonder how I am going to cope if an experienced bunch of guys struggled with the car! Time will tell I suppose :)

Well I took the car to my mate\'s unit last night to sort out the blowing exhaust and also just to have a poke around underneath (as I can\'t get properly underneath it whatsoever when using a jack!).

The blowing exhaust was just a missing nut on the rear of the second cat, God knows where that\'s disappeared to but after sticking a new one on all is well.

While under the car it appears that the driveshafts are running wayyy too close to the rear subframe (about a finger\'s width a way) and that parts of the chassis have at some point scraped the floor. Awesome.

Took the car for a quick skid as well afterwards seeing as it was soaking wet outside, it feels an awful lot nicer on bigger corners/roundabouts than smaller hairpins or whatnot which I\'m guessing is down to the DTSS not causing as much trouble. Speaking of which, I\'ve been speaking to someone this morning about making me up some DTSS bushes and sticking them in a set of hubs for me, I\'ll keep you informed...

So people have said but they don\'t seem readily available by the looks of it. A guy on Driftworks just put up that he was breaking a Turbo II so I asked out of interest.

I got mine for £40, but they\'re not that common to find for sale. Have you pm\'d Mick Choi yet?

Oh and yeah, I was going to tell you - these things appear to kill CV boots quickly when low. Both mine are properly shagged on the inside CV joint, really split wide open. I covered them in gaffa tape (lol), but it\'s only a temp solution! My car is always jacked up when I see underneath though, so don\'t know about clearance. Good job you can\'t get it any lower anyway!

Damn totally forgot, I\'ll get on it!

Yeah I thought it was going to be an eventuality after studying mine! Bahaha gaffa tape, epic. My diff seems to have wet itself as well...ah well.

Picked up some new bits today as well:

Nardi Deep Corn:

RE Amemiya AW-7s for skidding on:

Also got a Driftworks drift handbrake button to put on but not really sure how to get it on, the FC handbrake seems a little different to everything else out there (that there are instructions for at least).

That\'s the plan (hopefully!)

Haha it wasn\'t actually me that did it though, I went out for a few laps, thought it felt a little weird so let my mate (BDC licence holder) have a quick go. In three laps he\'d managed to absolutely rape it. He got some good angles but also said that it was quite possibly the hardest car to drift that he\'s ever driven - mainly because the welded diff and DTSS are constantly fighting each other. He used to have an FC Vert himself (which still had DTSS) but he didn\'t have a welded diff, which he said made it a lot more predictable when the DTSS started fighting what you were trying to do.

As for the clutch, "the hat" has offered me a second hand paddle clutch pretty cheaply, guess it\'s worth a shot?

It was done at Buxton Raceway, it\'s only a tenner to drift normally but those pictures were from a private drift day that we had there on Saturday.

To be honest I\'m constantly worrying about damaging my car as it\'s hardly as common as an S13/S14, nor is it as easy to get parts for when it (inevitably) breaks. But the way I see it is it\'s already got holes in it (the wings) and dodgy patches of paintwork so it\'s hardly in concours condition. I bought it for skidding so I might as well use it for that. When the paintwork\'s ruined, I\'ll get it redone. If the bodywork gets damaged, I\'ll stick a bodykit on. Although sometimes I do wish I\'d bought a tatty S13 to rag the nuts off.

Buxton is tough on cars as it\'s got a big concrete wall all the way round it. Places like Oulton Park and Santa Pod have hardly anything to hit so there\'s a lot less at stake damage-wise.

There is a max of 5 including mine known here by the sound of it, 2 are cabs and 1 is s4 turbo or egi, which I think leaves mine and 1 other s5 coupe. I have only seen the S4 one, 2 are owned by one guy and not driven I am told. I think the final one is in Nicosia not many have seen it. So yeah, finding parts would have to be uk or Japan and shipping them here would not be cheap!

Car seems to be running ok at the moment apart from some slight rubbing issues between the front left wheel and the coilover spring on hard lock, so more spacers required! I had a nosey round yesterday and I\'m currently running 8mm slip-ons on the front which is hardly ideal, so preferably I need some bolt-ons. At the moment the gap between arch and tyre is the width of my index finger just before the knuckle, which according to my ruler is something like 18mm (accurate technique, I know! :P). Theoretically a 20mm bolt-on spacer should do the job (after removing the 8mm slip-on) but to me the wheels sit nicely in the arch at the moment without looking ridiculous so I can imagine an extra 12mm would make it look a bit...tacky. I originally thought a set of 15mms would do the job, but apparently I might need to shave the studs down to get those to fit?

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know...and also which brand to go for as there are so many! I originally was going to get them from Driftworks because I need them ASAP and they do next day delivery, but it appears they only have 25mm items :(

I don\'t have anyone to recommend, but we \'safely\' ran bolts with cut down heads on them on my mates golf a while back. Just a case of cutting them down so they\'d not catch, and also so we had enough head to still tighten the bolt properly.

Doable, but not ideal. I\'d not run it that way for drifting, but I\'d be happy with it on the street, day to day.

Bit of a problem to report. Was putting in my gauge holder tonight which meant unplugging the boost gauge from the radio loom, unplugging the vac line, putting it in the holder and then wiring it all back up. The gauge and the radio used to light up the second i turned the key, but now they are only coming on when I switch on the sidelights :/ Everything\'s wired up exactly the same, I\'ve tried unplugging the battery in case it was a grounding issue, I\'ve started the car just for the sake of it, nothing seems to make any difference :S

The wires in question are the red and black ones from the radio loom. Both worked fine before! Any ideas?

The welded diff is horrible to be honest, all it does is fight the DTSS and reak havoc. I\'ve driven a few S-bodies with welded diffs and you can\'t really feel them that much, in the vert it never lets you forget about it! I\'d like an LSD ideally to be honest, but as the car is no longer my daily I\'m sure I can live with it.

Depends on how often you\'re drifting it to be honest. If you\'re taking it on track say, once a month then it might be an idea to have two diffs (Ant from Japspeed welded mine and said it was a piece of cake to get it out the car compared to, say, an Mx-5).

But if you\'re going to be skidding at every opportunity (like me :P) stick with the welded all the time.

Because Ross (who stuck the wheels and splitter on in the first place) offered me pretty decent moneys for the wheels plus the OEM ones...and the S13 splitter. Seeing as mine had pretty much illegal tyres all round and the OEM ones are fine it wasn\'t too bad of a deal. Nothing too bad\'s happened thankfully! It\'s just the car was taking over everything I was doing and determined what I was doing and where I could go. To be honest, it was the petrol costs that got to me the most. Obviously I knew it wasn\'t going to be great but I thought I could live with it...driving a car that does 50-60mpg for the last two weeks has put things into perspective really. I love the car and really want to keep it but without a more efficient powerplant under the bonnet I don\'t think I can carry on with it :( I emailed Mitch at Drift Garage about the possibility of doing an SR20 swap but it was decided that it\'d be a ridiculous amount of work so the idea was shelved.

I\'ll probably sell the S13 splitter shortly, I\'ll let you know :)

Buy a more economical second car, I have a Volvo V40 1.9D sports lux as my second car, get the FC on a limited mileage classic car policy, as soon as you sell it you will think: if only I had my FC. I have found it was cheaper to run 2 cars than it was to run the rx7 full time, all other cars are a downgrade from an FC.

M1tch, me and Ali just aren\'t old enough to insure 2nd cars for a reasonable price, otherwise I\'d do so too. But when all your NCB goes on the fast, fancy car, then the premium on something small is extortionate if you\'re below 25. Last year at 22 I got quotes on a 1.1 of £700 or so, with a car valued at about £300! Anything bigger was £800-£1000.

For those of us out there who\'re young and without well paid jobs, it\'s a stupid choice of car. I\'ve just persevered more than most!

Well hopefully by the time I\'m back in the uk with the FC I\'ll be 25! I\'m not sure who does the dual car policies but I know you can get them, my insurance for last 2 years (in uk) was Adrian flux. It\'s worth calling them I really rate them.
Title: My 1989 FC Vert Turbo II
Post by: ali303 on October 05, 2011, 08:12:39 PM
Adrian Flux will offer me a dual car policy but not until I\'m 21.

The car I\'ve been using over the last few weeks has been my sister\'s which, seeing as she\'s away at uni now, I tried to get insured on under my own name so I could SORN/sell the FC and massively reduce my premium and still get my year\'s NCB. As the car isn\'t registered in my name I can\'t do that, so my premium and NCB is all centred around the FC.

In other words, I need to replace it with something else that I can insure under my own name. I would love to keep the FC as a weekend toy or whatnot, but paying the insurance price I am at the moment would make it a stupid idea. I\'d much rather be paying that much for something awesome I can use every day to be honest :/

If your under 21 I\'m not surprised your struggling with the running, insurance and tax costs. The RX-7 is not a cheap car to keep/live with unfortunately. I can only afford one now as I have a daily driver which is paid for completely by my company and the FC is purely a werken/enjoyment car. I have the upmost respect for all your guys that use your T2\'s as daily drivers, bit unless your on a really good wage it\'s not easy. I mean I\'m full on pikeying it with mine, insurance here is €450 per year and that is expensive for Cyprus! If I was over 25 it would cost me less than half that, my car is on English plates so I am not allowed to tax it! Even if I was it would be classed as 1308cc here in Cyprus and fuel is about €1.25 for 98 ron fuel. If I were in England right now I\'d have to totally re-asses my situation with the FC, running one on a tight budget even as a weekend or good weather car under the age of 25 is tough. Hope you fond a way to sort it out, if you just want a cheap drifter your best looking at mx-5\'s or BMW\'s, or of course s13\'s.

It\'s not the tax and insurance costs that annoy me to be honest, I can live with them as (for a 20 year old at least) my job is pretty well paid. It\'s just the petrol that bothers me...everywhere I went it was in the back of my mind and every time I got asked to go to the pub or to I went to see my girlfriend it\'d cost me £5/10 a time...it just isn\'t worth it :(

I already have a daily that\'s registered in my parent\'s name and it\'s what I\'ve been using for the last few weeks. My issue is that I don\'t see the point in spending so much money on keeping the FC only to use it once or twice a week at most (as is being proposed). I would much rather just have the one nice car that I can use pretty much all the time to be honest.

It\'s like spending a fortune on a massive TV only to spend the majority of your time watching a tiny monitor. If you\'ve spent a lot of money on something, you\'d want to get as much use out of it as possible, it\'s only natural!

Although I guess one option is to SORN it over the winter, get a pretty nice and slightly speedy daily in the meantime and then get the FC ready for mega pimping once it\'s sunny again...! By that time I\'ll be 21 so might be able to find a half decent classics policy, and at least I\'ll have something nice for daily driving too (at the moment I\'m using a Punto which is literally the gayest thing ever).

I see your point, but as i said said before. An FC is certianly not an ideal daily driver on any kind of budget, i don\'t have to worry about the weather though and make sure i drive the FC at a minimum of once a week!

How come you can\'t get classic cover for it untill your 21? It don\'t make sense to me. The car is either old enough to qualify or not surely I can\'t see why your age matters.

Because the copmpanies realise that the RX-7 although a classic, is a bit of an aminal and see under 21 year olds with RX-7\'s as a bit of a risk i suppose. I have to admit, i can kind of see their point in some cases :Giggle

Still makes no sense. Surely they\'ll just say sorry but no we can\'t do it. Not we can\'t do it on a classic policy but we can rape you on a regular one if you like.

Thought I\'d tidy up the mangled mess of wires in the car at the moment so sorted out the gauge/radio arrangement. Still need to sort my wiring issue out as it looks like the entire radio loom has been pikey\'d together in the past...there are two aerial connections!? :S

Anyway, got everything slotted in, still need to wire up the gauges. I put them in the lower position so I can use a radio with a pop-up screen (something I\'ve wanted for ages).

Still in two minds about putting this up for sale...anyone got any gangster wheels that would tempt me otherwise? :P

I\'m sure you can find some nice rims on the old DW. you shouldn\'t sell it if you don\'t have to, good job with the cd player! Some stool has cut all the wires in my centre console so I have no clue how to get it working :(

Yeah...I\'ll see what happens anyway. I got bored today and test drove a brand new Golf as I was passing the VE garage...it was pretty good but then I fired up the FC when I got home and it felt good to be able to feel everything vibrating through the steering wheel!

Aw man that sucks!

Put a photoshop request on a Civic forum earlier regarding wheels and I suggested RPF1s as a starting point. Obviously the colour\'s wrong (I\'d rather have silver) but they look pretty good I reckon.

They are okay, you need dish mate! Try and get some image rims or something and refurb them yourself? Lots of people sell dished stuff on DW, ask DtheB he will inform you that dish is the law on the FC! He is understandably very passionate about the subject and it\'s rubbed off on me.

Conclusion = Dish
Result = uber coolness
Failure = punishable by death (or a standard looking FC)
Summary = Dish or Die (I guess)

:Giggle

In serious note though, it\'s your car so stick what you think looks good on it. I\'d defo stick clear of yellow though ;)

I\'m not sure, as long as they are kept clean they will look okay. They could clash with the black splitter though, however have you considered black rims they should fit perfectly with your colour scheme.

Time to get back into this I think seeing as the car hasn\'t moved for over a month now...after putting it up for sale it got plenty of attention but after being offered BM after BM as a swap I decided to keep it.

First things first, I need wheels! Haven\'t found much for sale in the correct size but I\'m looking to go for a staggered setup with 17x9s on the front and then a mate has made me a deal for a pair of 18x9.5 et 20 Rota Grids...I think they could look pretty mean:

(Some pics I found on Driftworks)

And a really crappy guesstimate on how they might look on my car made using the RareRims virtual fitting bay, I definitely think bronze would be the best colour.

Other than that...not a lot to report! My front wings are getting pretty tatty and the lower mounting points have given way to rust and whatnot so could do with some new ones...although I do quite like the look of the Origin ones for sale on here at the moment! Also need to get my clutch sorted, get the radio/gauges sorted and then replace the brakes as they\'re definitely well past it now. Anyone know of anywhere that sells OEM discs/pads?

MadzaRotaryParts are the guys you want for OEM parts! (besides mazda) :p

Although I think I have a set of either front or rear pads I bought from them (possibly both) and never used. If you\'re interested, I\'ll check for you...?

Oh, and by my calculations, you\'ll struggle to fit 9.5J ET20 rims under the front arches. You\'ll either need good stretch, or the origins. They\'ll poke 8mm less than my 9J ET6 steelies on the front. Ideally a 10mm fender would be ideal, although the origins means you could run without stretch - so max grip!

If you could have a look please dude :) The white FC in the above pics is running 17x9.5 et12 on the front according to the build thread, but the 18x9.5s I mentioned in my last post are intended for the back. Hopefully they\'ll be ok, the white FC is running 18x10.5 et12 on the back!

And pipe down Ben I\'ll get it done :P It\'s been a while since I\'ve spent a fortune on car parts but to be honest I\'ve been glad...I haven\'t been skint at all recently (for once!)

Believe they\'re Weds Farmas\', one pair in 17x8, another in 17x9. Hardly the most aggressive fitment ever and the tyre sizes are all wrong but should see me through the winter. Hopefully they\'ll be here for the weekend!

Thanks guys :) Going to try and order some bolt-on spacers for the front before the end of the weekend (25mm should do the trick) and then I\'ll put my pair of slip-ons on the rear. Also need to ring up a few part-worn tyre places to try and get some in the right sizes.

Next priorities on the parts list are clutch (Liam, I replied to your email earlier today :)), DTSS eliminators and then sort all of my wiring out so that I can get the radio and the gauges setup and working. After that it\'ll be time to start looking at polybushing the rear subframe and what not, along with some new transmission mounts (changing into second at high speed is seriously sketchy at the moment). Power upgrades will follow shortly after, but when I can I\'d like to replace the OEM exhaust as it\'s so quiet it makes skidding behind loud(er) cars hard work (as I can\'t hear the FC whatsoever!)

Aesthetically I don\'t think the car needs anything adding other than general tidying up and replacing the front wings. Depending on how money is over winter I\'ll get it resprayed (doors shut) on the cheap (a few of my mates are sprayers) which will give me chance to sort the odd little bits of rust and other small bits of damage.

Well some bad news, went to get my new clutch fitted today...and turns out that I need the counter weight from an automatic Series 5 for the flywheel. Apparently this is common knowledge but with me being relatively inexperienced I completely overlooked the matter. Time to go hunting for one of those then...

If you are fitting a lightweight clutch it needs to have a couterweight, the OEM flywheel has one inbuilt, whereas the lightened flywheels need a couterweight. You only need a counterweight if you are fitting a lightweight flywheel and clutch like my ORC 709, if you are using an OEM flywheel you don\'t, as it has an inbuilt counterweight :) You need an FC auto counterweight and not an FD one as the rear counterweight balances out the front counterweight.

Grinder has 2, one is broken :rolling

Ask Hayward Rotary or some of the bigger tuners, im sure they will be able to hook you up with one, its a part that they would have stock of due to the performance upgrades that are usually done when upping the power etc, did the kit not come with a weight?

On another note, a picture my mate took outside the garage yesterday with the fail rear stance. We nipped to Greggs to get some food while we were waiting for the ramp to be free, came back and found some of the customers had come outside to take a look at it and get a few pictures :Giggle

Might have some good news regarding the counter weight, seems Mazda Rotary Parts have them in stock but I\'ve just given them a ring to check if it\'s for the Series 4 or 5 as I believe they\'re different? Just waiting to hear back from them now but I\'m hopeful it\'s the right one!

Edit: they\'ve just got back to me to say they\'re going to have to speak to Mazda directly as it seems they\'ve been discontinued...

Well still waiting on my counter weight (no pun intended) thanks to Mazda, got to thank Mazda Rotary Parts for being so helpful though so hopefully should have it in time for fitting at the weekend :D

Some pics of the parts that have gone on/going on:

SuperForma hubcentric spacers for the front (they were 25mm which in hindsight is a bit weak so they\'re going on the rear and I\'ll get some manlier ones for the front)

Exedy six-puck clutch which is in the process of being fitted:

And the cause of all my rage for the last week or two, counter weight for the flywheel! Massive thanks for Clive and Lisa from Mazdarotaryparts for tracking this down for me, hopefully it\'ll be installed tomorrow!

Quote from: rising son;800228youre saying 25mm is weak, how wide are your wheels ? cause ive only ordered 10s.... my wheels are 8j 10j

8Js on the front, 9Js on the back, not sure of the offset. I reckon I could just get away with 35mm spacers on the front if I was prepared for some rubbing, 30mm would be the safe option.

Well for various reasons my clutch didn\'t get done so yet again it\'s more time with the car off the road :( My mate didn\'t know his workshop didn\'t have a 54mm socket to get the flywheel off so I\'m going to have to try and track one down this week. On the other hand I found a video from back in the day while trawling my hard drive, happy times:

I got the car back yesterday and took it out for a few spin last night, a few obvservations:

The clutch is ridiculously heavy and aggressive. I don\'t think I\'ll be driving to work in the car any more! It\'s basically on or off, when trying to manoeuvre with it (by riding on the clutch) it sounds pretty horrible but it\'s the only way to stop yourself stalling or hurtling towards the kerb!

The flywheel is very, very light. So light in fact that, if you knock the car out of gear for more than a couple seconds at a time (ie when approaching the roundabout so you can judge what the car in front is going to do) it\'ll stall itself. The car bump starts straight away if you just stick it back in 2nd but it\'s still a bit annoying to be turning the steering wheel and then have everything turn itself off when your approaching traffic! I\'ll just have to go down through the gears or make sure I don\'t let it drop from high revs to idle in a short space of time. Speaking of idle, it seems to be bouncing off the anti-stall pretty much all the time now. It\'ll fire it back up to say, 1500rpm but then it\'ll drop straight back down to the anti-stall and it\'ll keep on repeating this. I\'m assuming setting the idle higher would help?

But more importantly of course, the car drifts so much better now. As long as the car comes on boost when you finish the clutch kick it\'s happy days and you\'ll end up very, very sideways. Before it\'d only go sideways with the most aggresive of kicks and with massive steering lock (ie a roundabout or very sharp corner) as the standard clutch just didn\'t seem to have the beef to kick the rear end out on anything less. Now though, give it a tiny bit of lock, a little kick and you\'re heading towards the kerb...good times!

Some pictures:

Counter weight on

Next jobs are to sort the clutch cylinder out (it\'s leaking so I\'m a bit worried about blowing it now the clutch is massively stronger than before), the brakes need attention (discs, pads and the handbrake isn\'t great), the wheel fitment needs perfecting (the 25mm spacers are going to go on the back and replace the 8mm ones that are there already and then I\'ll get some 35mm ones for the front), the gauges/radio wiring needs sorting and I\'d also like some rotary noise in my life so an exhaust is required.

Oh, and a big thanks to Ade (TiddlesRX7) for arranging to get these made for me: DTSS eliminators :burnout I\'ll get these fitted over the Christmas holidays!

They MIGHT need the sleeves shortening slightly, the length of the metal where it\'s been lathed thinner looks very long to me. Otherwise, they look great!

So, light flywheel and decent clutch =  more sideways? Good news, since I have an uber light flywheel too to fit someday! Surprised it made such a difference!

No worries Ade! I\'ve had actually had some interest in them from another forum as well so I\'ll be forwarding on some details to you ASAP!

Quote from: papercutout;802409So, light flywheel and decent clutch =  more sideways? Good news, since I have an uber light flywheel too to fit someday! Surprised it made such a difference!

100%! To be honest I think my old clutch wasn\'t really up to the task at all, having let someone else drive it (when it had the OEM clutch on its last legs) they reported that, while it was fine for normal driving, it\'d slip when kicked, which in theory means less skid as the whole process is a lot less abrupt. Obviously the new clutch has no such difficulties as it\'s about as subtle as a sledgehammer.

Plus the lighter flywheel has made the throttle response so much better, perfect for balancing skids and what not.

Bit of a wiring issue at the moment, I\'ve been without a radio for the last few weeks which was just down to the fuse going, although just before I got round to sorting it the lights on the inside of the doors also stopped working along with the clock, which resets itself every time I open the door. I\'ve sorted the radio wiring out to an extent and replaced the fuse so the boost gauge is lighting up now but the radio still won\'t come on and the clock and open door lights keep flickering...any ideas?

I thought the same but I\'m nigh on 6\'4" so I wouldn\'t worry about it! To be honest it\'s better as the Momo Monte Carlo I had on before was flat-faced and the bottom caught on my knees - the Nardi clears them fine now but makes getting in/out a little harder.

I put the splitter back on and actually secured it this time using plenty of industry standard cable ties. No doubt it\'ll scrape on everything but I\'ll see how it goes. Either it\'ll fall off or it\'ll hit something so hard that it\'ll rip the wings off instead. Should be interesting!

Also woke up to find the sides covered in mud. Looks like those roundabouts were a bit dirty last night :Thumbsup!

I\'m just going to focus on functional parts for it from now on and making sure everything\'s working in time for the first drift days this year. I\'d love to dump all my money into it but I\'m going to try and stick it on a classic policy come renewal time in March which means I\'ll need another car to keep my NCB so will need moneys for that.

I really need to get the DTSS eliminators in but after doing some reading on it i think it\'s a bit of a big job to tackle by myself on my drive - I know it\'s cheeky but grinder do you think we could team up and tackle it one weekend!? :)
Title: My 1989 FC Vert Turbo II
Post by: grinder on January 02, 2012, 06:51:52 PM
its not cheeky at all to ask mate ...

i did it on the drive way ( many moons ago though )

aslong as you have all the tools etc.. its not a overly big job

IIRC you have to get the back discs off .. thats took me about 6 hrs on the JDM cab - so that could be a hassle

I know shaun helped me out last time .. so i can always ask him to provide some help aswell ( i know he likes tinkering )

if you have a quick look thru some of my threads you will see what tools you need .. have a look on how i did the DTSS and how i did the disc and pads ( shows you how to remove the rear disc and pads )

if you are happy to have it off the road for a few days etc..

might be worth jacking it up , remove both back wheels and try and do both sides at the same time ?

You need:
Couple of sockets (17mm and 19mm I think), and a socket that you can use to push the old bush out in a BIG vice (mine were so seized in we used a cutter and a hammer in the end). Plusgas or similar would also be good.

Remove wheel
Loosen driveshaft bolt (32mm?)
Remove caliper
Undo hub
Smashinate old bushes out
Press new ones in
Reverse of above.

It\'s time consuming, but if your DTSS bushes aren\'t too hard to get out, it\'s not a particularly challenging job. Go for it IMO! Just on a weekend.

Thanks for the advice guys! After this weekend I don\'t mind taking the car off the road for a short while to get it done as I\'ll have my daily back by then. I\'m just more worried about getting halfway through the job, getting stuck and then not being able to drive the car anywhere to get some help! It\'ll probably be next weekend when I get chance to look at it so I\'ve got some time to prepare myself at least.

I found getting the half shafts out and "undoing" the hub\'s to be the hardest bits. They require a fair bit of beating/strength. Unfortunately with mine the half shaft was fused to the hub so I had to angle grind it out.

As ben says, getting the bushes in and out is pretty easy if you have a decent vice and some sockets. Or if you don\'t wanna remove it all from the car you could try using a threaded rod and some meaty washers to try and just unscrew it
Title: My 1989 FC Vert Turbo II
Post by: ali303 on January 14, 2012, 04:26:23 PM
Made a start on the DTSS eliminator job and it didn\'t take long for something to go wrong - the upper bolt on the brake calliper bracket has sheared and as it\'s on the back of the bracket it\'s pretty inaccessible. So now I\'m stuck with a car that I doubt is safe to drive anywhere and a sheared bolt that I doubt I have the tools to get it out.

It\'s the upper one of the bolt shown (pic taken from the Mazdatrix site)

I\'m not going to have another free weekend for a long time now so I really just need to take it somewhere to get the job done as soon as possible so I can start getting to some skidding days! Anyone got any suggestions as to where I could take it?

When I replaced my rear calipers I had 2 bolts shear, so just replaced the entire caliper, surely you just need the mounting bracket section? Get a decent sized photo of the part and I MIGHT have a spare.

Have you tried a mobile mechanic? Always they always seem to have a way of sorting these kinda things out. Alot cheaper than a garage too

Gutted just as you were getting going!

Get a decent picture up of it mate, then we might be able to help more.

Thanks for the advice guys, unfortunately the car is at my parents\' house at the moment (as they\'ve got a covered driveway) so I\'ll have to pop over later to get a picture.

However this might help for the time being: it\'s bolt number 6 on the diagram

Those bolts should be easy sorted fella as once both bolts are broken when you slide the disc off the carrier will come with it then nip glyph a decent welder and have him weld new nuts too the broken bolts then the heat from the welding will also allow the bolts too be removed with much more ease

Good idea dude, I\'ll have a look at it ASAP!

I had a look at mine yesterday. If its the top bolt then the threaded end is still in the calliper isn\'t it? If it is you can always take the calliper off and either drill out the thread or if you can get something on it to grip it wind it out (lots of wd40 first!)

Funnily enough my dad actually suggested the same thing yesterday! It sounds perfectly doable so I\'ll have a look next time I\'ve got access to the car :)

Trust me welding a nut too the broken part will shift it the heat generated from the weld act in the same way as oxyacetylene

I know but not everyone has access to a welder. Plus thats only good if there is some of the bolt still showing to weld the nut too.6

Even if the bolt is snapped flush you can still build a very small amount of weld then pop the nut over it and then fully weld by all means try just grabbing at the snapped part with vise grips or the likes bug it may be worth heating it as much as possible first with butane gas or the likes as getting hold of oxyacetylene is not the easiest if you don\'t work in a garage

if you can get it off and to a bench its soo much easier

i would then either weld a nut to it ( as ade says - you need access to a welder ! )

or drill it out - but if you are doing that , i recommend using a pillar drill
Title: My 1989 FC Vert Turbo II
Post by: TiddlesRX7 on January 17, 2012, 03:20:06 PM
Very true Stu a pillar drill is the way to go but most people don\'t have one in their garage :( If you can get some mole grips on it maybe just warm it on the gas hob to try and free it off a little and try and wind it out. Just don\'t over heat it.

Worst case if you need the car is to buy a whole calliper off one of the cars being broken at the moment along with a set of bolts. That\'d get you back on the road.

Well I had another look at the car last night and I\'ve got a few ideas as to how to get this sheared bolt out, taking on board the above suggestions of course ;)

Ideally need the car sorting over the course of the next month so it\'s ready for the first Buxton on March 10th. List of most important things that need doing:

Get the DTSS eliminators in (obviously)
New discs and pads all round (don\'t need to be anything special as I\'m not planning any power hikes just yet)
Get my water and oil temp gauges wired up (can anyone point me in the direction of the right senders etc that I\'d need?)
And an exhaust of some description would be cool, just so I can hear the thing out on track!

The discs and pads can be fun , took me about 4 days to do mine

Although if you have removed the back discs to do the DTSS then that certainly helps in the future

My back discs were well and truuely siezed on , where as the front just fell off

if you can be certain that the dics will come off and nothing snaps then i reckon you can do all 4 discs and pads in about 4 hrs TOPS

its when things go wrong that you suffer

have you got the calipers off yet so you can see what you need to do ?

i cant think if they are threaded , as this will be a pain as you need to drill out the broken bit and then then retap , if they are just holes , then use a pilar drill and drill em out .. nice and slowly

if you were a lot closer you could have bobbed then down and i would have gotten my dad to drill them out for you ( he likes things like that ! )

I didn\'t I\'m afraid man, I just gave the car to my mate during the week and he had them in a day and a half later! He said they were absolutely no problem to fit though, although one of the original DTSS items was absolutely shagged.

Gave the car a bit of a blast through the Cheshire countryside to see if there was much difference without the DTSS...the answer is a big yes. Even when doing doughnuts in the car before it always either understeered or you\'d end up overcorrecting, keeping it sideways was like being on an ultra-fine knife edge. This was a view shared by many of my mates who are pretty experienced skidders.

The car feels a lot more natural to drive on the ragged edge now and felt pretty good on the odd bypass roundabout...I\'ll have to take it for some more extensive skidding soon!

Well as the weather was beautiful today it\'d have been rude not to take it to work...

Took it for a night on the skids last night, it\'s got so much more rear traction with the DTSS eliminators it\'s ridiculous, before one little clutch kick would have the car pointing in the wrong direction but now it\'s a lot more predictable. Definitely needs more lock though and a few other bits and bobs, it\'s very nervous and such (I remember reading an article on the why the FC is so much harder to drift than an S-body, the main issue being a much better weight distribution meaning it gives less of a pendulum effect).

Also, I\'ve always suspected a minor fuel leak but I put my foot down before and it smelt like I was literally driving through a petrol station (as opposed to just the regular smell of a car running rich). Weird, I\'ll have to take a look.

Also bought some Driftworks steel wheel nuts as the D1 items were rubbish. Seem to be doing the job so far.

Haha I know man, as soon as the sun comes out I always rethink my decision! The most pressing cause for concern has really been that I\'m going to loose the use of my daily wagon from May until around October. I would just buy a a dump to roll around in but I\'m not old enough to get a cheap multi-car policy for myself (I\'m a named driver on the current daily, on the FC I\'m the policy holder) so ideally I need just the one car that is acceptable to use every day!

Maybe I should just take up cycling haha.

My egi was a daily and it killed me, so I learned the hard way fest time round. FC ownership is so much simpler as a second car!
