Title: ***TRACKDAY - Snetterton, Mon 19th Sept ***
Post by: Casey on August 14, 2011, 10:40:46 AM
:D Here is the next event in the trackday calendar, following the highly successful event on 6th August at Blyton Park, where we had over 20 RX8OC and MRC members taking their cars on circuit. I would again like to thank everyone for supporting the Blyton event and for making it such a fantastic day out.
So, we are now off to Snetterton; this well known Norfolk circuit has undergone a radical change making it not only longer but largely resurfaced and reprofiled for the modern era. If you\'ve not tried it - this HAS to be your chance! The multi million pound development last winter has resulted in the "300" circuit adding seven new corners ensuring that getting the right line to carry speed down the straights is now even more demanding.
Please note that this day is being promoting this as a "Porsche" event, which means there will be lots of Porsches on track, but this is NOT an exclusive Porsche day, any other car marque is welcome.
Never done a trackday before? As on all trackdays, they are well managed and marshalled. There will be a comprehensive, compulsory, safety briefing at the start of the day for all drivers, followed by some slow “sighting laps” behind a lead car. There will be plenty of experienced trackheads present who will be only too happy give assistance to any novices.
Provisional timings are:
Event Type: Open Pitlane** Sign On 7:30 till 8:30 Safety Briefing 08.30 Sighting Laps at 9:00 Lunch break 12:30 – 13:30 Finish - 17.00
** “Open Pitlane” means you are free to drive on the circuit when you like, for as much as you like, subject to safe numbers on circuit. If you have a standard RX-8, then expect to get about 10-15 minutes on track with around 25-30 minutes to “cool-off”, else you, your engine, tyres and brakes will overheat!
Circuit Statistics: Length: 2.99 miles Corners: 13 Max Noise: 105dB Static (shouldn’t be a problem for any RX-8 I’ve heard)
THE COST?: We will be booking via "Easytrack" for this event; the public price on their website is £190, but I have negotiated a £40 discount if we can get more than 5 cars to book the day (that\'s a 20+% discount!). Even better, if you are a full MRC member, you can claim back a £20* rebate after the event, so bringing the cost down to just £130, a total saving of £60! What more incentive do you need?! *MRC members are limited to a total of 4 trackday rebates for this year. REQUIREMENTS: Helmets are required, and you MUST bring along your driving license (both parts if you have them) on the day for inspection. PAYMENT FOR THIS EVENT: Payment can be made via the "BOOK NOW" link on this Easytrack webpage (http://www.easytrack.co.uk/article/SnettertonRS), where you will also find further details of the day that I urge you to read. You will need to register your email and address details on the Easytrack website, then, at the checkout, use the magic code "case" (lower case and without the quotes) to get your £40 discount! EXTRA DRIVERS: Normally there is a charge for 2nd drivers but as we are bringing a group along, 2nd drivers will be FREE of charge. PASSENGERS: Also FREE for this event. GARAGES: Normally there would be a charge for these, but we will be allocated garages FREE of charge, so don\'t book any of these on the Easytrack booking form! INSURANCE: Insurance is not compulsory, but your normal road insurance is unlikely to cover you. Please look at the separate “Trackday Insurance” thread for advice and make your own judgement. INSTRUCTION: Easytrack have professionally qualified instructors available; £30 for one session (~20mins on track). These can be booked in advance, or on the day. LOCAL ACCOMMODATION: Some people may want to stay locally the night before, the night after, or even both! If anyone knows the area and any good places to stay, then please let me know. There is a list of local accommodation HERE (http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/snetterton/circuits/snetterton.asp) TRACK LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS OF HOW TO GET THERE: CLICK HERE (http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/snetterton/find-us.asp#snetterton) MORE INFORMATION ON THE VENUE: CLICK HERE (http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/snetterton/circuits/snetterton.asp)
QUESTIONS: That’s what I’m here for! I’ll do my best to answer any questions you post on this thread, or PM me.
I want to do this; (PLEASE don’t cut and paste the list, just briefly post up your interest in this thread, or PM me, and I\'ll edit this list to keep things tidy) :D 1. For those of you who don\'t frequent the RX8OC forum, it seems "California Style" has managed to book Martin Byford to give a group of 5 RX-8 drivers some private tuition for the entire day at Snetterton. Martin is a driver in the current BTCC series, piloting the AmD Milltek team VW Golf :cool:D
By coincidence, Martin also lives in my home town of Colchester.... maybe I can offer him a lift up and get some extra instruction on the way ;)
List updated; still time to get your name down, but don\'t leave it too late to book a place as it may sell out soon.

Oooooh, did you suspect something might happen?
How\'s the car Tony? I saw you drive off the line at the RS8 sprint circuit and then retire after ~50 yds? Saw your car parked up rather forelornly by the tents later but didn\'t see you to find out what happened.....
BTW, I know SIX people have told me they have paid up for Snett so far (post at top of this thread updated). Anyone else paid up yet? Get your skates on, before all the places are gone :) ....................

I have recently (after Cadwell) shortened the rear axle and shortened my original half shafts myself, they held up with 888 tyres on the road for a few tests but rotorstock was the first test on full 9 inch wide slicks and to be honest, i wanted to test them to destruction so i knew they would take what ever i threw at them so if they had survived the sprint circuit i was going to drag race it a few times. :Giggle
As it happens, the passenger shaft snapped clean at the weld on the first run. I now have a set of Quaife Grp 4 shafts which should have no problem in dealing with what i can throw at them. Unfortunately I have too much going on at home this month to manage the track day.

Well, back from Italy and about 4 pounds heavier due to the delicious food out there, so that\'s my excuse in advance for being slower than everyone else on Monday :D
I\'m really, really looking forward to this!
VERY IMPORTANT THINGS:
1. A briefing pack is attached - hastily prepared as I\'ve been away, but PLEASE skim through as there are some important bits in there, alongside a lot of the standard stuff you (should ;) ) already know by now :D 2. REMEMBER to bring; - Driving License - the TWO disclaimer forms (links are in your Easytrack email AND in the attached briefing pack). Failure to do so might delay your tracktime start..... 3. FIVE garages have been reserved for the 8 of us to share. They will have the name "CASE" on the garage doors, so first to arrive on circuit please locate them.
See you all on Monday :D

Thanks to Malcolm for organising an excellent day out for the club at Snetterton yesterday that saw Seven RX-8\'s and Jim (Lennycarloff) with his FC showing just how quick an FC is on track with very few mods while playing with the Caterhams and the Porches ;).
We shared the track with lots of Porsche\'s because Porsche owners club were also there very pleased to say that the Rotarys more than showed the expensive Porsche\'s you don\'t need a 60k plus car to get around the track indeed the guy in the £300,000 Porsche carrera gt just may have wished he had a Rotary after the engine blew up after 6 laps :3Confused
Once learned, this track is a great high speed "racers" track and fast with two long straights that the RX-8 surprised me on by getting left behind really only by the proper race car slick tyred Porsche\'s by easily pulling 120 mph :)
One real shame is that Chris (CJR) was unable to get there as his car will suit Snetterton wonderfully and the even bigger shame is that we can\'t entice the clubs many other big power Rotarys to the track to show the piston brigade just how good the Rotary really is, after all the FD was built to corner and not just look good and be a road car with it\'s huge racing pedigree
Perhaps next time you will join us and we will have more than one RX-7 to entertain us all, a job Jim did admirably yet again yesterday
As Malcolm said this track is a visit again not just a tick in the box to say "done that" :Thumbsup!
p.s. To those who saw me on the side of the road with the police, to my dismay they stopped me for driving an uninsured car !!!!!!!!!!!!
After 1/2 an hour on the side of the road and producing the certificate at the station today that it turns out my plate came up on the police data base as not 3010 in numbers but 3O1O in numbers and letters, and that somebody has recently altered the cars details, grrrrrrrrr, but amended now :Thumbsup!
p.p.s I have put up a pic of my car as I hope that some of the many pics taken yesterday appear here as well, o yes and this is the type of Porsche mentioned above

Thanks for the feedback on the day Clive. Everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves on this fantastic new track layout. Really pleased that Jim represented the RX-7 brigade, and showed what the FC could do - a very capable track car, esp on R888\'s.
The RX-8\'s didn\'t disgrace themselves on the infield part of the circuit, where even I had no problem keeping up with some more powerful cars (Radicals and GT3\'s aside :D). I had to lift-off a few times & even brake once mid-corner (not good!) to avoid going up the rear of more powerful cars which left me standing in a straight line, but couldn\'t do corners!!
As Clive said, it was a real shame that CJR had to pull out of this trackday as his car would\'ve been superb on this near 3 mile circuit, and I would have loved to see his car unleashed down the two long straights - even my speedo was racking up 117mph (indicated!) at the end of the fast straight with only n/a 230bhp on tap :o
I hope the next time we go back that a few FD\'s (and indeed any other roatry powered car, of course!) will be tempted to try this excellent circuit.
Thanks to everyone who came along and made it such a fun social day to in the pits, as well as out on track.
Some videos for your entertainment. A couple of my faster laps and chasing down a BMW M3 in the infield (twisty) section....;)
Two different cameras in use, from two different perspectives.....

Really happy you had a great day guys. I too thought the RX7 would have performed well at this track.
Hope to have the opportunity of testing the 7 again this year, although autumn seems to be here and a damp track in my 7 do not mix well !!

^^ Some good videos there Jim. Great sequence of Clive passing and then that incident of him being forced onto the grass by the Porsche - at least the driver did apologise for diving up his inside at that tight corner! Also spotted bigpete and Aston in the videos. Lovely watching the footage and reliving the day. I definately want to go back there next year!
