Welcome to project Dreadnaught, named after the worlds first purpose built battlecruiser here in Britian :)
This one has been going on since about nov 2009 and is a very slow build inbetween working, life and now sickness :(
i have been bounding the odd few pics about so thought i may need some ideas and help along the way so getting it all in one place:thumbsup:
The car is a registered 1995 and was mostly stripped when i bought it back in sept 2009 as a doner for a gearbox on my then track car with the intention to sell all the other bits and the shell.
The shell was mint, with only one small piece of rust an inch square, so after a bit of thought on the old track car which was starting to get on a bit i set about building a new and improved machine:cool:
old track car,at its best now recycled and who knows part of my old car could be in the can that holds your baked beens for tea... RIP

Engine bay of the old track car, i will be reusing the old engine built by knightsports, i dont know the specs but it has been a reliable(touch wood) engine, but there are some changes such as electric water pump, alternator relocated and other bits and bobs
(http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/5051/blinged045.jpg)
Onto the new shell which i originally just bought to use the gearbox out of and install on the car above which got done and then dismantled the car befor using again in anger lol
Nice straight example.

One of the main reasons i decided to build the new car was safety-mine and passengers of coarse :) i was getting quick and more confident in the old car and with a rear half cage in there only need me or another car to make a mistake into the side of me at high speed and it may become serious very quickly.
shell is back from atomicrex, i made the mistake of not painting it quicker, which left surface rust on her :( what a ball ache and lot of time to remove it all!

Anyway thats how dreadnaught stood for a while, whilst i worked all hours and collected parts ready for the build.
Sept 2010 so long ago yet feels only like yesterday! and i\'ve got myself a local barn work can begin again in a large dry space-what we all want! lol
Car is placed up on axel stands to be stripped completly to be repainted inside/ouside/underneath.
Wire brushed all underneath the back end(still got to finish the center section at some point) and stonechipped and painted white with the arches all painted black - I\'ve done this so if there is a fluid leak, ie diff, fuel, gearbox leak its gonna be easier to see or trace.
rear subframe off

Out in the main part of the barn and a temp cover made up as its nesting time for the birds and you know what its like, something shinny and they will :censored::censored::censored::censored: on it lol
Old concrete roof sheets means on a nice day the whole barn acts like an oven- perfect for spraying :)

Now it get interesting :D
Subframes i originaly was gonna do orange
(http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/544/latestpicss002.jpg)
but after seeing it done i decided it needed to be something different and to keep the arms natural alloy colour
I changed my mind on the subframe colour and went white instead, which stayed longer than the orange did but still not 100% liked for practicality was perfect easy to spot any leaks onto etc
here is a pic of everything cleaned ready to go back on
(http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/4333/shinnyandcleansuspensio.jpg)
You can see how far i\'ve gone with this- so far as to clean, re-zinc and gold passivate all the nuts and bolts etc. A step to far, bordering obsessive?
You can see i\'ve also got new bushes etc again thanks to jon at atomicrex for supplying those.
Pillowballs were all ok so left them just cleaned out as much of the old grease(which was clean) and refilled with new, checked the dustcaps for any damage on them and refitted.
I had a standard ppf sitting around so had it shot blasted and stitch welded up and for something quirky had a mate who sprayed the car suprise me with a colour of his choice as long as it wasn\'t red like the mazdaspeed item.
Came back vw green, i\'ve not taken a pic of the ppf yet but liked it so much i\'ve done the subframes and also my re-amemya triangular front turret brace to to \'pull\' the colour up through the engine bay a little..
Rear sub in the sun, and difficult to get the colour in the pic correct as its a bit darker in the flesh

I made a mistake as i was in a rush that day and there is a difference between the subframes in the last two pics so this one came down and off again.....anyone spot my fduk up?
front sub done, i\'ve not fitted it yet because i want to raise the engine and gearbox in from below so there is less chance of sctatching the paintwork going in from above- just waiting on danny/dale from dm motorsport to sort me an oil pan brace and that can all go in :D
Front sub and arms

more later............
Nice work ! :Thumbs-up
Wish I had a barn to work in :(
you have the patiance of a saint,if i dont get something done in a week i get the hump and leave it,good luck mate a top class job
barn is costing a small fortune tbh but worth it :)
patience is something i\'ve not normally got but i picture the final product in my head and know i cant rush cause it wont work out the way i want it if i start rushing!
Top coat in 2 pac.
Ford commercial diamond white :)
some people weld up all the holes etc not being used, i felt this does add weight negligible i know but hey its my car:p although i did f/g over a few holes such as the heater matrix holes as i know i wont use them.

looks awesome mate, looks like ours will be built similar sort of time, have to get us and thomas_mk6 for a track battle!!
Love the colour of the subframes, very different, you could do the wheels, suspension and calipers in the same colour to tie it all together.
you going for sub 1000kg like me aswell?
are you running power steering?
i think after mines built and ive got used to it again i might go down the electric water pump route, just need to get jon to put me in an extra 12v feed in my loom for it.
Is yours going to be for track only or thinking of racing it?
as she sits tonight.....
picked this lot up this afternoon from the powdercoater
(http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/1286/trackcarandbrakes016.jpg)
All the brakes are done in a gunmetal, fronts are kad 6 pot 356mm rears are rz314mm
I\'ve got the rebuild kit for the rz callipers,so they will prob be rebuilt this weekend meaning that end should almost be finished by the end of the weekend :)
Never got my ass in gear and ordered the kad seals etc untill today lol will have them tuesday.
The two front uprights are black.
hopefully have some refitted pics by end of sunday :)
question time...
With the rear hubs how do they detach from the upright? i\'ve got the driveshafts out, but i dont wanna damage anything so are the hubs pressed on on do they just pop off with a bit of ebow grease?
I want to dismantle it so i can remove the disk dust guard so i can clean it all up properly:wiggle
A pic to help show what i mean

Loving it

Nothing will give more pleasure than to show you more of the back of the car :chat

Not my cup of tea, thought it would be a bit chavvy lol(thats not ment to offend anyone and if thats what you like go for it :)
you going for sub 1000kg like me aswell?
im going as light as possible but am a tight ass so no carbon doors or boot etc yet, i personally think between us there will be no more than 30kg difference, i will have plastic windows rear screen and the electric heated front to help save weight that way
are you running power steering?
yes but standard with the saxo electric pump, i had this fitted on the old car so know it works and think it\'ll do for now
i think after mines built and ive got used to it again i might go down the electric water pump route, just need to get jon to put me in an extra 12v feed in my loom for it.

one or the other cant afford both or will be allowed the time off work to do both!-A logistical nighmare being so far down in the country lol
would like to get into something at coombe if not maybe some southern hill climbs or sprints and then do shows with trackdays the day befor to make it worth while

thanks all imput welcome :cheers
The doors cut down as far as i could go

to be fair, looking at them doors ill bet there might not be 30kg, im probably 30kg heavier than you anyway so it will even out haha
You show me the back of your car!!! that will only be when im lapping you;)
Im having one of those heated screens aswell, saves running a heater setup.......that your plan aswell?
One thing i think you will have me on is the brakes, thats an area im putting on the back burner for quite a while.
Have you thought about anything aero related, ill be making a splitter, canards, massive diffuser and wing, the only thing i need to think about is weight, ie what materials to use to make them.
when you hoping to have it finished, xmas?
Get some rz brakes, From my experiance they are more than capable with some ferrodo ds2500 pads all round.
I think aero to those porportions are a bit of wives tail until your sat in an f1 car that goes fast enough to get to the speed to make it all work, front diffuser and undertray to guide the air away from the rads and small rear wing to keep it stable at high speed(look at the standard r1 spoiler its small and works!-it does the job.
Im gonna run a feed adjustable spoiler i had on befor,i proved on many trackdays it does the job it needs to do by beating many kit cars, and elises such as the 240R cup car at silverstone.
Looks fantastic dude! I deffo want to see this when its done!! Keep up the good work buddy! :)
Cheers
Tom
great job mate :D :D
Rob have you powder coated the bells?
If you have you need to remove it....the paint will come off with the heat and rubbing. It can cause the wheel to come loose, or the bells to come loose from the rotors.
Ive seen this with someone that brought their car to me after having their front wheels powder coated and the company did the hub faces.....then the car went straight on!
Same goes with the callipers too. You should really be using high temp paint or getting them anodised.
Looking excellent!! Takes a long time doesnt it!!
Sorry
liking the scheme of the rex! :cool
Awesome. Good job. :)
Looking forward too see more project pics. And ofcourse too see her in track. :)

Sorry
Takes ages! its all the cleaning thats the backache, but once done its a satisfying job, i could never afford to pay someone to do it the hours it takes.
rear callipers were wet painted as i dont have all the propper tools to remove all the handbrake mechanism and was not sure if it has any parts that wouldn\'t survive the over temps that the powder coating goes to.
I was told the powdercoating would withstand the temps the brakes would get up to? you think it will melt off? Thats rather annoying,
The kad callipers (you old ones, that i had off tony rip) only ever saw the race track and are cira 6 yrs old and the annodising was all coming off so went for the powdercoating in the hope for more durability
Hurry up, get it together. I will be finished project X before you and I have not started yet
Rushing is for fools,:Nono!:spank
Im a little worried now that the powdercoating is not goona be up to the job
What temps do you lot think im gonna get up to on the brakes-remember this is mainly track car
100*c 200* 300*c ?
Rob, your question is difficult, depends on the size of the brakes, the track where you run and how you run, from your driving style. to give you an example I have seen my friends run in Monza and in many cases their brake rotors were glowing with a beautiful red color.
so the temperatures can reach can go well beyond, especially if you use the racing pads as DS3000 or other aggressive pads :)
For me to much more 300c hehe :)
You are doing a great job. I find with my projects, no matter how much time, care and attention I give it, and my thoughts of how it should look it never quite works out that way

This is what i thought, although the disk will reach 800*c plus its the transfer of heat to the calliper and bells, saying that the fluid will boil at 270*c if i used dot 5.1 racing fluid anything lower than dot 5.1 and the boiling point reduces so i\'ll have more probs than the powdercoat coming off if the brake fluid reaches that point...?
Sometimes my English is not the best, I hope you have understood what you mean. I advise you not to paint the bells of the brakes and leave them as they are.
take a brake fluid dot above 5.1.
I suggest you RBF600
the rest should be ok and not have future problems, but we also feel our MRC friends what they think to be more secure :D
Looking good rob. Who\'s done your engine? Ross? What is your setup?
Engine is from my old track car built in japan by knightsports with a iirc hks to4e changing to a t04r, gearbox is new to me with os gikin close ration 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear set. and ACT 6 puk clutch
Im doing everything except the mapping which i\'ve not decided who\'s doing yet, re-works are top of the list at the moment though :)
some special pics coming tomorrow hopefully of what i think will be the best mod fitted to the car tomorrow, which should scare the competition and give me aprox 100bhp :mmmm
I\'m going to guess a bad boy rear spoiler? 100hp minimum gained from those things, or possibly a drivers seat, they add like 200hp.:Giggle
nope im not having one of those big gay wings and im not having lyposuction either lol
Must be stickers then?
Just thought i would add a bit of porn to the mix
(http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/8540/carandflywheel044.jpg)
whats the strange aztec markings on the shaft.....
is this a lightweight fly with auto counterweight? or standard manual fly and counterweight?
Not that i\'ve disconnected many ppf\'s from the gearbox but everytime i undo the nuts a bit of dirt or rust on the bolt seems to jam the nut on the thread and then i end up breaking the thin bit of metal mazda use to hold the bolt captive so found a good one in my box of parts and had the bolts welded in place should stop all the flaffing about if i ever have to undo the nuts again.
i would just like to say that i admire your patiance and O.C.D. the car is looking amazing. have you done it all or got outside help? you have done exactlly what i want to do, strip it out and start again in your own image.
cage was supplied and fitted by atomic rex
paint was done by a local guy
and the rest has been done by me(except the powdercoating)
:)
I am finding it really, really hard now to keep up with the cleaning!!
well all i can say to that is keep going mate your doing an amazing job
Bit more done over the weekend, been cleaning up the engine from all the grime etc that collects over time.
Had the new oil pan brace from dale and danny aka DM-Motorsport arrive on friday so fitted that.
Also had a couple lengths of the magmawrap also supplied by DM-Motorsport to cover all my manifold and downpipe- 20meters it soon got used, the company pics of this makes it look easy, but first go though to get it right, tight, and looking alright was a mission!
Got the gearbox with the os giken gearset in mounted to the engine with my short shift on.
next stage is to lift the engine and gearbox in, hopefully tommorrow
Been working on the car again doing a few hours here and there,
-engine/gearbox/turbo all fitted together and fitted in the car,
-front subframe bolted up,
-front upper and lower arms fitted
-front ARC antiroll bar fitted along with uprated antiroll bar mount,
-steering rack cleaned and refitted although i would like the atomic rex one its outta my price range at the moment :( ,
-powerplant frame fitted
-\'old\' 4" exhaust refitted but will need looking at again as the silencers are fooked, but its on under the car so its out my my lol
-32 row mocal oil cooler fitted and plumbed back in(still need to do ducting)
-started on my v mount, got the rad mounted but need to get the inlet/outlet moddified to suit v mount position
A few pics...

whats the extra exhaust bit with the flexi section in it?
plumbed in wastegate
Hmmm solid engine mounts!!!! Hope your fillings are glued in good. ;) what\'s the box on the front of the UIM?
The Solid engine mounts were on the car befor i had no trouble :)Although it\'ll be road registered(for south west road races/hill climbs) so that will be interesting.
The box in front the uim is a bit of a strange one, its in line with the oil catch tank, I dont remember seeing other single turbo set-ups like this ?
Has anyone got a diagram of how a oil catch tank is supposed to be plumbed in?
