Title: Rookie badly wanting to buy RX7
Post by: oli on June 22, 2004, 09:35:44 AM
Dear all,

As you can probably see I am fairly new to the club and wondered whether I may call upon some of your technical expertise/knowledge...?

I am currently looking to buy a 3rd gen. RX7 and have heard all sorts of scaremongering stories regarding the longevity of the wankel engine, expecially apex seals? (circa. 60k for a full rebuild?). I have driven one of these amazing cars and now MUST buy one!

If anyone could please share any knowledge about the pro\'s and con\'s of RX7 ownership, what to look out for and whether the engine is the only achilles heal, then it would be greatly appreciated.

In fact, any advise at all would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Yes 60k for a rebuild is about right.

I would say the achilles heel from a running point of view is fuel consumption.  Single figure mpg is not uncommon.

There lots of info in the hints and tips on buying a rotary section if you have a read, which is where im moving this thread to also :)

Cheers

Generally it would be a good idea to budget for a rebuild when you buy one or try and buy one with a recent rebuild, (i am currently doing a rebuild on mine).

The engine\'s are like any other engine, treat them well, regular servicing and make sure the fueling is right for any mods and they will last, treat them wrong and its rebuild time...

A basic rebuild is £2100 give or take £100...

If you do some searches on the forum you will find lots of info.

Good luck mate

childen lets not dwell on the bad, to summarise they are very expensive to run (as are any of the top notch performance cars ;)), but provided you can afford this then the pros are great & IMO easily worth any slight problems which may occure from time to time. It\'s the best looking & most rewarding drives you can ever hope to own!!! :cool  so as i say if you can afford to run it you will have no regrets if you get a decent RX7 :D although i would recommend you learn the cars & your limits in safety under instruction or on track these cars do bite especially in the wet (Si innocently whistles yet again.....;) lol)

Buy one from a reputable dealer or importer who is prepared to give you a warranty should something go wrong.
