Title: Air conditioning removal. Is it worth it?
Post by: Donato on June 22, 2004, 09:14:13 AM
As most will be aware im taking my car apart for a rebuild and respray etc...

As the title suggests, is it worth removing the air con system or am i giving myself a lot of work for little gain?

Your opinions please...

blimey - another one!!  The same is being discussed on FDUK. my personal advice

KEEP IT!  The car is a hot car, and very hot during summer.  if you\'re going to remove it, I\'d remove the stuffing in your seats, the sun visors, the padding round the steering wheel, and any other comfort things - you are clearly a masochist!!!

As pointed out on FDUK  Jim Clarke, james dean, the guy from T-Rex and fangio all didn\'t have airconditioning, and THEY DIED!!

Keep it, even in the scottish tundra!

I hardly use mine, for fear of even worse mpg.  Parking in the shade seems to work well enough, once your moving it doesnt get too hot.

Keep it, 90 mph down the motorway with the window open is loud and it gives you ear ache.

I regularily do long trips in my rex at the moment and having the air con on makes bugger all difference to the MPG. Perhaps 1MPG worse.

I don\'t think think that the rx7 unit is all that powerfull but I\'d certainly rather have it. Considering that (as someone has said on FDUK) it only weights about 25lbs in total there\'s not much to be gained from ditching it either. It not only helps to keep you cooler but is good for demisting during the winter as it works as a dehumidifier.

Worth noting that you should run air con regularily (at least a couple of minutes a week) if you have it in order to keep the compressor etc in good working order. A friend of mine works in the air con business and told me that most problems with air con systems are caused with them not being used for months and then switched on during the summer.

I have read the FDUK thread and peoples opinion on this one, i think to be honest, the power i\'m going for, and the fact its going to be a everyday use car as apposed to a track car it would be a bit of an overkill to remove the aircon..

Thankyou for all your opinions...
