Title: Auto Vs Manual
Post by: Mikey22 on July 27, 2011, 06:33:59 PM
Hey Guys,

A bit of a tech question here......is there any difference between a radiator for an automatic and a radiator for a manual?

Just looking at a new uprated rad for my car but each one ive seen is for a manual.

Is there anyone who can give me some advice on autos too?

My Rx7 is a little weird for me, the last owner has had it remapped so that when it changes gear the power does not dip.....the car kinda juggers into the next gear and you lurch forward. Sometimes if you have your foot down the HOLD light flashes which apparently means ive over torqued it.

Is a manual much better than an auto?

Cheers

Autos don\'t go off boost, so the power won\'t dip :)

Wow really?......something ive learned about my own car lol

Its ok im still trying to work out what the S L and the other modes are for. I know they are the 1 2 3 gears if your on hold mode i think.

Downside of not getting a manual with the car lol

S might be sport, so will run through all gears instead of missing 1st for a sportier drive, L might be low range?

Auto rad has a gearbox oil cooler in it, you can fit a manual rad and separate  oil cooler.

Yes manual is better unless you have an auto only licence...

Otherwise you have more ratios so have better in gear acceleration, you can take greater advanatge of engine braking, you get more power from the flywheel to the wheels, it\'s more fun, more involving, you can use many more driving techniques, the list just goes on for me.

Plus and this is the main thing for me, I am the BOSS of the car I tell IT what to do I CHOOSE my gear not the car because I am the BOSS! :D

What ECU do you have?

If the standard ECU is removed, the things that make the gear changes smooth, do not happen.  The flashing light can indicate the wrong ECU or another problem, would also bet the hold function doesn\'t work either.

The auto needs the auto specific ECU and a Banzai patch loom, which allow a manual ECU to be installed and keep the smooth gear change and hold feature. Then a Power FC or other manual only ECU to be installed

Surprisingly you do have good engine braking, this is completed through "lock-up", you get good fuel consumption, you can also select any gear at any time.  Once rolling acceleration is not much different from a manual, they can be faster.

If you want to choice between manual or auto - drive both then choose.  Opinions are opinions and everyone has there own view.  Really depends on what you use the car for.

From reading on US sites the auto box is good for about 320 rwhp, then over that limit if you are doing drag starts the life of the box is quite limited.
