Title: rx-7 fc egi overheated
Post by: aundre-3000 on July 19, 2011, 12:47:49 PM
hi guys been on here a while just got my first rx-7 a week ago its been awesome so far.

Anyway basically just came back from the mot garage today rather annoyed
i dropped it off there this morning just been to pick it up and the coolant buzzer came on i popped the bonnet to find there was no coolant in the rad.

I asked the guys who worked there what happened and they said that as they were reving it for the emissions the engine had overheated they said it dumped the coolant it out of the expansion tank and they turned it off immediately and let it cool down.

they said it was due to the fact that there was no air going through the rad but there\'s a electric fan on there plus in now for a fact that it was full of coolant befor it went down there

so what can i do to asses the damage to the engine from looking around its to remove the egi fuse and crank it and check for bubbles etc.

any help would be appreciated guys

thanks connor

I only hope they haven\'t wrecked it.

Was it warm when it went in for emissions ?

Incidentally - the emissions check on these older cars shouldn\'t require any revving at all - their handbook should have told them that - so you\'ve got quite a strong case for taking them to the cleaners should there be any engine damage.

Best thing you can do is get some coolant back in it, jack up the front of the car a little (so the rad is highest point), and open the heating controls on full (this allows the coolant to get into the heater system and air to get out, and then turn the car over for a few minutes - shutdown and check levels again once cool enough - get the rad topped up as high as you can, and then fill the expansion bottle to the level.

Get it off the jack and let it run for 10 minutes - check it isn\'t bubbling over anywhere - and check the top rad house is warm (should be as thermostat should open), and not pressurised solid (which could indicate exhaust gases pressurizing the coolant).

If it\'s all ok, keep an eye on it for a few days - topping up the coolant in the expansion bottle as it should draw any needed top up from there as it cools.

Sounds like you\'ve dealt with some massive muppets. Listen to the Prof and good luck :)

Fingers crossed for you too, if there is any damage I bet the garage won\'t be so irresponsible once you\'re done with them!

thanks for the replies guys

yeah it was when i took it they said they had to warm it up i took it for a drive for 10 minutes until the temp gauge was 1/3 of the way up then went down there

ok mate thanks i\'l do that asap
thats what i been doing waiting for it to cool down and top it up there\'s no bubbles coming out of the rad so i\'m hoping its all ok.

tbh i\'m quite surprised they are normally really good and very through we even took my dad\'s lotus esprit down there for a mot and they were spot on.

I\'m sure i\'m paranoid i took it for a drive earlier and thinking the temp gauge was higher than it was before i doubt it was. Im not sure what i\'m more worried about the temp gauge going up or the rate the fuel gauge is going down haha

Just ignore the fuel gauge, works for me :p

Kind of works for the temp gauge too - it normally goes up to midway and then never moves - if it ever goes higher - it\'s pull over time !
