Just decided I am going to enter the EGI into the Practical Performance Car £999 Challenge.
Sounds like a good fun event and isnt going to break the bank (which is the main thing). http://www.ppcmag.co.uk/999-challenge.html
Anyways im just working out the cost of my car at the moment (need to account for bits I took off my old EGI) and just wondered if anyone has any ideas for making this car faster on a very small budget? At the moment im estimating that I probably have £200 tops to spend on it.
The challeneg consists of drag run time and handling course time. I think it will do ok on the handling but straight line speed is an issue I reckon.
So any ideas welcome and would also be good if others joined as well, as it does sound like a good fun event.
Thanks
Mark
If it doesn\'t have to pass emissions tests / sound checks for the challenge - then probably take off the exhaust system and weld up some headers onto it - need to weld a small pipe on to operate the 6 port actuators - but if you\'ve got access to cheap welding skills and some flanges - may get you another 10-20 BHP ?? Chat with Brett - he\'s eeked out performance from EGI\'s in the past - short of porting the engine.
There\'s always a small shot nitrous too - but I can\'t see you getting that for sub £200
I\'d love to have a go but there\'s no way I could claim mine was £999, the brakes cost more than that! And the car I have that could sneak into that is currently being worked on and technically cost more than £999 to buy and belongs to the missus!
Strip as much weight out of it as you can and if possible get it as low as you can if you have adjustable suspension. A new set of brake pads will help on the handling course too. I reckon a bit of work on getting it off the line as quickly as possible won\'t go amiss, so you get the best possible time in the drag racing and as much speed as possible in the sprint.
Cheers guys. This is one of Bretts old EGI\'s so already has the header done. Have added the Hawk pads, braided lines and RB ARB\'s from my old EGI as well.
Still need to take some more weight out of the car so that can be done. Wont be able to use my Enkeis and RS2 tyres as they were bought as an addition after the car and would put the cost over 999. Only options I can really see now are things like NOS or a DIY Supercharger fitment (old M45 Eaton has had one recommendation).
Thanks again
Mark
You could "borrow" the RS2s from another "car"! I\'ve got a set of 18x8 slicks on RX8 alloys if they\'ll fit if that\'s more in keeping with the competition, a nominal fee could be agreed for their use to keep it within the spirit of the competition.

Lol thanks but im ok. Im sure I could get away with using mine but its not in the spirit of things so will find other ways :)
Thanks

Remove the silencers.
There\'s an aussy chap who sells chips for EGI ECUs... I think Grinder had a link to him... Beyond that there\'s not much else you can do without risking the engine melting.
I\'d totally empty the inside of the car of all un needed interior parts as they way a ton!!

A lot has already been removed but there is still a lot of little crappy bits to take out and I have only got rid of half of the sound proofing crud so far as well. Im still planning on ditching the sunroof in favour of alu sheet but will do most of this in August when I actually have a bit of holiday.
As for removing silencers I think thats a no go as noise levels need to be adhered to and I lost a back box the other week at an autotest. The noise whilst great was very very loud :)

me and a mate made a kind of home made supercharge a few years ago, we used a centrifugal fan connected to the power stearing belt go a bar of boost out of it, had it fitted to a MG ZR it soon blow the head gasket and then never bothered with it again.

Could you put it on carbs?

Another good suggestion. Just reading one of the old NA power threads on rx7club.com. They will make good power from the get go, especially when combined with free flowing exhaust etc. Another option I believe is to use a true dual exhaust. Will look into this as a possibility also.
Thanks
Mark
I\'d be very interested in your build should you go down the carb route, heard lots of good things about it. I was going to put twin 40 webbers on my old Nova GTE, i imagine a 13B on carbs would sound pretty sexual!
Oh yes, 13B on a Webber IDA would be niiiiiiice!

been there and done that long ago and it\'s allsome sound too
go for long system out of long steel tubes and one buffer at the back( e.g cut up the OEM buffer, removed the small tubing inside, replaced with perform tube, packing in rockwool or bag of lava rock from BQ and weld it shut.) it\'ll freeing up the flow
catch the idea?

more sexual than a turbo....lol.............................( that\'s true...)
Will let you know what I decide to do. Carb would be ideal as it should fall under budget and provide decent gains :)

You want a some 48\'s then ;)

Single 48 or double?
Well double would look better :Giggle

Lol, single it is. There\'s a 48 Dellorto finishing soon on eBay. After that the main cost would be sorting out the manifold for it I guess

need a UM from racing beat/mazdatrix
Might have found an RB one over in the US for a decent price :)
Also scouring Aus site for anything useful.
If he has got it, is that all I need to go carb? The Dellorto im watching is a 48 with linkages etc. Just needs stripping down as its not been used in a while.
Thanks
Mark
Also just found a modified Nikki with 6 port adapter etc over in Aus. Going to buy something soon :)

Ignore this, just researched and would be a waste of time.
Biggest problem I think is finding something like a Weber or Dellorto that is already tuned for a 6 port as the tuning of the carb will be the hardest part otherwise.
Thanks
Mark
Doesn\'t the guy a WGT know his stuff about carbs on a rotary, might be worth a quick chat with him?

not really, in the past, I used micro drill to drill out fuel jets and leave air jet alone.
a cutting of hard paper out of cornflake packet for the acc(sp) pump(delly only) to stuffing it up to increased (sp) more fuel into the engine.
for the weber, easypea to tune... but caana help you there to tune up for you cos I\'m up in scotland...
benrx\'s right... Pip might helps.
Don\'t waste your time and money taking out the fuel injection. Just remove the stock air filter. On the exhaust remove the thermal brick and the remainder of the stock exhaust. Find a second hand racing beat exhaust or similar.
The stock ecu will learn the new set-up, but you need to run it on a dyno. This set-up in a dax rush gave 165 bhp at the wheels. The first run on the dyno gave 120 bhp, by the third run (nothing else changed) i had 165 bhp.
As others have said get rid of weight and increase suspension control.

It was about 8 years ago, but yeah :p

fit\'lik john, totally quite agreed with you there to save money.
think that you mean 165@fly not wheel on injection.
delly carb can do 165 at wheels..(180+hp@fly)
You really need to \'carb it up\' man, if you can get it within your budget that\'s the way to go!!

Getting it within budget is going to be the issue. Keeping an eye out for a 48 Ida on the US and Aus sites
Thought this rung a bell. Not sure if you\'ve seen this before but have a look.
