Title: Do I Need A Vented Bonnet?????
Post by: Adam on June 19, 2004, 05:23:22 PM
Right, i am rebuilding my engine at the moment and i am converting it to single turbo.  I have been looking at vented bonnets on the understanding that i need one (to get the heat out)  I don\'t like the carbon ones but don\'t fancy having to pay loads of money for a fibreglass one!.  So would i get away with just the standard bonnet, as i have noticed a few people running single turbo\'s with non vented bonnets...

any advice would be great.

Cheers

Adam

I might be biased (panspeed vented bonnet copy!) but they do look cool and there\'s a significant amount of heat expelled through mine.  You notice it when in traffic as you peer through the heat-haze.  Getting heat out can oly be a good thing.

Fibreglass is much cheaper that cf and doesn\'t wiegh all that much more.

I\'m looking into the options for adding a vent to mine above the turbos but would need some way of channeling water away from the opening so it doesn\'t pour onto the tubbys.

I dont think its necessary at all, as long as you have a decent colling and intake setup. Nice, but no way necessity.

If your gonna get one make sure is has a rain catch underneath! Most of them don\'t have the rain trays... which is just plain silly, unless you live in sunny California!!

I have  Re-A one, which looks awesome:D  and I honestly think it does wonders in getting rid of the heat in the engine bay.... the SCOOT ones are excellent cos of the air intake and extraction capability.... but your right Adam, they do cost a lot! you can always get one sorted after you get your car done?

This mine,  its a standard mazda item,  i know a friendly metal worker.  agree with above it helps keep water and air temps lower as the air is sucked out through the vents which draws more through the front.
Hows it all going adam,  when do you hope to have it up and running.  got mine back in and started today, got to do the painfull running in process again.

Just something you might want to do when you start yours,  have it mapped for the basic running in as you will be doing over 1000 miles and if you use the standard apexi map it will be very rich and you build up carbon very early on as i found out the hard way.  i wish i had spent the hundred or so quid to have it mapped for the running in period.
