Title: Piper Alpha - 23years ago tonight
Post by: trotter on July 06, 2011, 10:22:21 PM
22:01 July 6th, 1988. A small gas leak was to trigger one of the most catastrophic industrial disasters of all time. It took just 2hrs to reduce the massive £2bn Piper Alpha platform to a smouldering ruin.

Although it was a horrific tragedy, some good did come from it. The subsequent Cullen Inquiry was responsible for an overhaul of the entire safety culture, both off- and onshore and is probably the reason why the UK oil and gas industry is now the safest in the world.

To the 167 men that didn\'t make the return chopper trip home...let me raise a glass.
