Title: Cat replacement mid and front pipe
Post by: yank on June 18, 2004, 02:25:55 PM
I\'ve just fitted a new cat back exhaust to my FD3S and wanted to get a replacement down/front pipe and mid pipe to really open her up. Does any one know the legality of doing this to a road car and how it will effect getting an MOT?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I take it your car is an import? Replacing the down pipe will not alter the legality of the car, how-ever replacing the cat [mid pipe] with a de-cat pipe will effect your immisions - you overcome this by fitting an apexi pfc and commander so that you can alter the A/F ratio for the MOT.
Hope this helps.

Cats weren\'t introduced untill late \'92 so an early \'92 car doesn\'t need to have one :-)  (like mine).  This means you\'ll only have to pass the much less strict non-cat emissions test.

What sort of power gains would you expect from putting on a de-cat and a down pipe?

Excellent I reckon I would be at about 300bhp with that, any sugesstions where to get a down pipe from?, as my mate can weld me up a stainless de-cat.
Also does it make the exhaust louder as mine is quite loud at the minute?

I\'ve got a WGT silenced de-cat pipe and the stock jap downpipe (i.e. no pre-cat) with the cat-back that came with the car and it\'s only a tiny bit louder than it was with the cat in place.  Note is much nicer though - less tinny.

If you\'re looking at any track days then it\'s worth the cost to get a silenced de-cat imho.

PS.  Flew through the MOT today even though the emissions test suprised the bloke as it runs really rich!
