Not really sure where the best place to post this so i\'ll do it here :)
ive put up a site with a forum at the moment over at http://www.rexmidlands.com (http://www.rexmidlands.com/) with the hoping that we can get a local community going and start having some meets up this end :) Its open to all rotary vechicles.
At the moment its all pretty basic but over time there will be some improvements and ive got a couple of ideas for things :)
So come on over and take a look :)
Whilst i havent done much on this yet i\'m getting round to it, just had a few projects and job start all at once!
Although a question would be, do you guys here see much use for a west midlands forum?

not really, there is a few of us around here though. get yourself over on fduk.org theres alot of us on there :chat
Fduk don\'t let you join unless you have an FD.
True, i wasnt aiming for it to be focused at one type of car but any rotary, Was just thinking it would be nice if rotary owners in the west midlands can get together, i see a couple of FD\'s around birmingham, no FC\'s though..
I think you would need to offer something different.
I log onto MRC every day and can\'t see any real benefit in looking for any other site.
MRC has a section for local meets etc, might just as well use that for meeting ideas.
As for no FC\'s - surprised you haven\'t seen me around.
Unfortunately due to it getting out of hand the monthly meet at Becketts Farm has been cancelled and I don\'t know of another.

John
Is that because you have a closed mind?
Quote from: RamoNZ;786142Is that because you have a closed mind?
No, and I share John\'s opinion. Everything I want to know, rotary related, I can find out from users on here who have had the years of experience in the industry to know what they\'re talking about.
The club offers benefits that many don\'t. Your yearly subscription pays for itself in discounted ticked prices to shows alone, let alone the other benefits of full membership.
I won\'t go anywhere else not only because I\'m not in the midlands, but because everything I want and need, is right here. What would be the purpose on signing up to many other forums just to get less out of it than I do being here.
For people in the midlands this could be good, and a really good way of getting to know other locals, but having it so centralised into one particular part of the country puts forth the illusion (I say illusion because I know that\'s not the intent) of excluding outsiders in lieu of forming a more closely-knitted, closed-in group of people, rather than having a nationwide forum simply with a sub-section or sub-forum to divide up the areas of the UK into categories (southeast, southwest, midlands, north, scotland and wales) where people can post up relevant things to their locale.
Just my (probably unwanted) 2 cents.
Yep I get it.
Aside from the fact you advertise your own forum, you clearly are happy with just the one TV channel, one radio station, one type of Mazda (FC in your case, god forbid anyone drive anything else), people with different race, religion, political opinion, gender, sexuality - need I go on?
Glad the world is not full of closed minded individuals - more forums equals more knowledge equals more information to more people.
I say diversity is king, long live diversity!
Your 2c is refunded :)

1) I don\'t "advertise" my forum, I have a link to it, not once have I ever posted a "hey come join us" thread, topic or post here, I simply have a link to it, that\'s not exactly the same as some of the 6 foot long advertising signatures on here, now is it?
2) Who said I had anything against anybody not in an FC? I like all rotaries and most Mazda\'s, with varying intensities. FC\'s are one of my favourites, below the Eunos Cosmo, and the RX4, doesn\'t mean I wouldn\'t have an FD or RX-8 given the chance, your assumption of my character fails nicely. :)
And as for
"people with different race, religion, political opinion, gender, sexuality", who are you to say that none of the above apply to me, or you, or anybody. I wasn\'t saying \'
not\' to make a forum for the midlands, just saying that in doing so, it could give the
impression that it\'s \'
only\' for people in the midlands. I never said that was the case, just that that\'s how it would appear to me as an outsider, it would make me feel unwelcome and that I didn\'t belong, as it\'s a group focussed on the midlands populous.
Next time you want to make assumptions about things and other peoples character, personality, beliefs, lifestyle and ideals, might want to check your facts beforehand. :Thumbs-up
Also, for somebody proclaiming "diversity" and "open minds", you\'re unsurprisingly quick to devalue my opinion purely on the basis that it doesn\'t coincide with and match up to your own. ;)
Either way, I wish Kamatari the best of luck on his endeavour, and if he wants/needs any help, I\'m happy to offer what help I can. :)
In order to provide some balance, perhaps it might be worth pointing out that with all due respect to Lacey\'s views, it\'s very much worthwhile visiting other forums, especially for the reason quoted "Everything I want to know, rotary related, I can find out from users on here who have had the years of experience in the industry to know what they\'re talking about." In the case of FDs, certainly, most of the users whom I would really consider have an invaluable and indispensible wealth of knowledge do not come on this site for various reasons.
Therefore, certainly in the FD world, FDUK must be considered as an invaluable resource for information. For old-skool techinical knowledge, of course, e x i l e is the way to go. Both forums also have a completely different "feel" to this one, and evidently many people far prefer the unique character of those forums.
With that said, I\'m not convinced the rotary scene in the UK is big enough to support another rotary forum, but wish the OP all the best with their endevour.
....if anyone\'s collecting these 2ps they\'ll..errr, have 6p by now
QuoteIs that because you have a closed mind?
Far from it but you\'ll have to take my work for that.
I try to view any related sites to see what they\'re like and if they\'re what I\'m looking for and to date I haven\'t found one that suites me better than MRC.
I am registered on FDUK - don\'t like it so I stopped visiting, each to their own.
I\'m registered an a few car sites each with a different core.
I used my open mind to make a choice.
I feel any new site would need to look to provide something fresh in order to develop and grow.
I responded to the post as I am in the Midlands and thought the view of a local rotary owner may be of interest to they guy.
An attempt to help not wind him up as seems to give enjoyment to some.
Lacey, don\'t get wound up it\'s not worth it.
John
Kamatari, go for it mate....
you\'ll be surprised how many are looking for \'something different\'
the more forums, the more chance of bringing people into the rotary scene...
go for it buddy
but i would make sure its run properly, unlike some forums, so be carefull who mod\'s it and make sure they aint power hungry, making sure you dont censor to much of the content (deleting thread\'s, moving threads, and banning people if they speak out or think differently) because lets face we dont want forums to be run like the chinese internet.
but what nikdagreek said is wise the uk scene isnt that big, there are forums out there like FDUK and E X I L E, which cater for the different type of rotary owner, which are different and have more freedom of speech.
i would have advertising on your forum as this can very political and ruin peoples livelyhoods, seen happen to some good vendors (and why queit alot of vendors dont spend any time on forums) (sp?)
hope goes well mate. buts lets face it it would be good to have an alternative to MRC
BOOOOOOOOOOM
Whoa Lace, looks like I hit a nerve!;) For the record though, the bold underlined link in your sig looks like an advert to me, however let\'s agree to disagree on that. :Thumbs-up
Nik actualy sums up what I would had said had sarcasm not got in my way, but I will add that a local forum or category specific no matter how small still has a place - if you don\'t try, you\'ll never know!
I\'m not in the midlands, but if someone started a Brighton (or Hove as I\'m not baised :)) rotary club, I\'d certainly check it out for what it\'s worth - I wish there were more rotor heads down here and that may be the thing that brings them out of the woodwork or links me to my local members who perhaps only post in parts of other forums that I don\'t traverse as frequently and therefore never cross virtual paths. MREC NI is a good example, small number of users that actually do meet up and one of them, who doesn\'t post here, is a rotary expert!
So for me, ill take quality over quantity anyday - i for one certainly wouldn\'t want to infer that some people here post for the hell of it and add very little to the pool of knowledge, apart from simply amassing a lot of posts in a short period of time, but I\'m sure that type of thing would be less prolific on a smaller sub forum.
For many years I have activity pursued the idea of local meets and or forums and even asked people to be area reps for the club, back in the days of "Scooby Si" he became or area guy for the midlands with Donato up north, between them over a couple of years I think Si managed one and Donato two.
Even a couple of forums have come and gone where I have said to people that if it helps they can piggy back their forum off MRC, problem seems to come down to lack of support rather than anything negative coming out of this Club.
I have said this because I feel its important that if anyone wants to do something locally or otherwise to promote our great cars they should be supported and encouraged ,
This is something I was going to bring back to the fore over the next few weeks anyway to try and get members to be more active next year, but this will be discussed in the members section with the paying members of this club where they will be able to voice their opinian about their club and possible changes that may arrise from this.

If you\'d actually bothered to pay your membership fee and could see in the members section, you\'d know I already have the permission of Clive and Lisa for that tiny little link to be there, and you\'d know I bothered to ask, before I put it there.

I agree, and my offer to help Kamatari in any way I can still stands, regardless of my opinion. :)

You\'re devotion to the club does you proud, but I completely disagree with your statements. More is always better. If you think this place is the hub of technical knowledge you should check Ausrotary - it will blow your mind.
I joined MRC to be a part of the UK community and to meet fellow UK rotor nuts. With the very honorable exception of a few undoubtedly knowledgeable posters, the rest of the \'expertise\' seems to be where to buy carbon fibre tat to airfix to an FD or what colour to paint your alloys.
Open your eyes to the big wide world.
NtG nailed it. Well said fella.
It\'s not the devotion to the club, it\'s just my experience. I have, so far, not asked a single question that hasn\'t been answered in it\'s entirety, accurately, and quickly. When I start asking technical questions that can\'t be answered, then I\'ll consider joining a second forum for further knowledge base. But everybody is different, and will have different questions :)
If your attitude, RamoNZ, towards John and Lacey means you will be an active user on a midlands forum i for one would stay away, if your trying to promote and support it your doing a p*** poor job by challenging peoples opinions and enforcing yours on what is probably the most widely used rotary forum whos support would probably be essential.
And if as you say you want quality over quantity im sure you will be staying here as thats exactly what Lacey and John are saying!
to be honest lacey i dont think you can come with a technical post that wont be answered, so i cant see you leaving,

Limit a rotary forum to midland occupants only, wow, what would there be, 10 - 20 members, i didnt realise its geographically limited to who can join.
And no it hasnt escaped my notice, but did you notice they were drumming up support on here?
Well thought out post Ian, sounds like your attitude would fit in well there, hence my post!
My suggestion from previous experience is to do some meets first, see how many people you get etc, then decide if it\'s worth making a dedicated forum. (RCC did this and it worked well)
Might be worth opening it up to all Mazda\'s or Jap cars though, otherwise you may struggle a bit!
Remember people, we do this for fun! :D

Are you thinking I was going to snitch you to the authoritah of MRC for illegal advertising? Sounds like someone is paranoid!:Talking1
My point about you having a forum was simply that at some point you thought it was a good idea to break away from the mainstream and do something unique/niche or whatever - geddit?
More is better and if it\'s not a success so be it, but that\'s no reason to try. Once again it\'s what that person gets out of it - a forum with 2 members where one shares knowledge with the other is a success in terms of making rotary ownership a more viable exercise for the person who gains the knowledge.
I\'m sure all the members of all the other forums would be disappointed to know they are wasting their time :Laugh
Anyway, GLWTS! Oh sorry, wrong thread!:Laugh:Laugh
Well didnt expect this thread to get so much attention!
Whilst this was in most ways a "come join us" thread, it seemed more appropriate placing it on an actual rotary forum.
Dont really expect there to be too many older rotary owners out there in the west midlands area but the idea is to try and get whoever is about together... I\'ve seen in the past the odd post in the meets folder seeing if theres anything going on, so if they were to happen to sign up and then get a little meet setup, i would see the forum as a success
Even though it was trying to be aimed at the west midlands anyone is welcome to join but if anything its more of a sub forum to this place.
I\'ve got an MX5 where im part of the forums that cover the whole of the K which are fine but then im also part of a west midlands forum where it only has a couple of hundred members which in turn probably has a fraction of that which are actually active but everyone gets on well and have good monthly meets, so i was just seeing if something similar could be applied to the rotary scene
So if anyone would like to join they\'re more than welcome! If not but you\'ve got any suggestions then please let me know!
i think there are more v8 fds in birmingham that rotary now anyway so you might have more luch with a v8 midlands meet !!
Reading this thread, a new forum Kamatari , are you sure :Giggle.
I only need this thread to remind me that if I had taken heed from friends of mine who warned 10 years ago that people will be really nasty toward each other where they would never do it in person and that I was looney to even try there would have never been an MRC in the first place !!!!!!!!!!!! :Hammer
Back to the start of this thread, Kamatari is to be commended for at least trying to get something off the ground for other people as its my experience that whilst many will criticise, very few will actually get out there and try and do things for other people for no reward.
Precisely. Give it a go mate, you\'ll never know till you try.

So? There is absolutely no correlation between a forum\'s number of members and its value to those members.

You\'ve decided the tone of this new forum already because a couple of guys stick up for Kamatari? It\'s exactly this kind of negativity that Clive is referring to. I\'ll say it again - GO FOR IT SON. Ignore the nay-sayers.
Alfred:
Yes i read the original thread, a forum aimed at a local community, no problems/no issues, if you read my posts and others, my thoughts was challenged because of my location. So, what are you saying, unless you are from the midlands you wont be allowed to join?
My initial post was in no way negative towards to a forum (if you read it) and have no problem with people being positive, its a good thing. However, there are ways to go about it, challenging peoples views and being sarcastic towards Kamatari\'s target audience, JohnF, who is from the midlands to be clear, isnt going to help Kamatari\'s cause! Their posts are actually more negative and inflamitary than mine because of their tone!
My personal feeling would be Kamatari would be far better petitioning the larger rotary forums and look to get some local sub sections set up which maybe he could moderate for the Midlands.

Backtrack all you want champ - whilst holding your butt in your hands.
Even Clive agrees with diversity - if everyone had your point of view even MRC wouldnt exist!
And regarding your locale excluding you from joining the forum, I\'m sure he would welcome any members, but the pure fact that it\'s a midlands based forum I\'m guessing is to attract members that will actually meet up being so close - Dorset to the midlands is a bit of a trek but don\'t let that stop you joining! :3gears-lh

My attitude?? Alls I\'m saying is that a new forum would be great if it works, no harm done if it doesnt. If that point of view means you\'ll stay away from the forum that is full of people who are looking for something new/different/local etc then you must you must be the kind of person that hates innovation and in cave man days you\'d be the the one saying \'don\'t eat that, you don\'t know what it is\' and die while others who did flourish. :Giggle
Re quality over quantity - um where are you coming from? MRC is cool, but it will never offer all things to all people so there always will be people that post rubbish just for the hell of it rather than trying to add to the pool of knowledge - a smaller forum (if it works) will provide those people with more of what they need without the trashy overhead. MRC in this example is the quantity and the sub forums would be the quality just so you are clear.
Don\'t get me wrong MRC has it\'s place, hence why I\'m here and a smaller forum won\'t be good just because it exists, but I am surprised that anyone has said anything other than \'well done mate, give it a go\'. :cheers
The forum is open to anyone so dont think if you\'re not from the west midlands and you join up that you\'re going to get kicked out lol
If MRC did want to to get some sub forums setup for different areas then i\'d be more than happy to moderate it, im just wanting to try and get more of a scene round here. It\'d be nice even if it was just a couple of people that used either my forum or the sub forum, sharing knowledge and helping each other out :) whilst this forum is great and everyones very helpful, the feeling i more get from it is a more...london way forum just down to where most of the people who post help are from (although correct me if im wrong!)
One good thing about this thread has been a few people from around the west midlands have posted so atleast theres a couple of people to get intouch with about getting a meet setup ;)

You heard the Pres. Stop trolling up the boy\'s thread looking for a squabble.
Like I said, on the first page, my offer to give Kamatari all the help I can still stands. And true, I have a forum of my own that I manage. Depending on the system that Kamatari decides to use, if it\'s phpBB I can even share some of my neat little bits of code for things like adding and enabling a games arcade in the forum and enabling users to embed youtube video\'s directly into their posts.
I wasn\'t looking to start a fight, I merely gave my opinion that the core of the forum (west midlands rotary owners) may simply give an impression of being closed to outsiders. As I said initially I know this is not the case, and not the intention of Kamatari to create a little gated community closed to non-midland members, which people would know if they read more than what they wanted to see. I only gave the opinion of how the forum would appear to me personally as an outside body.
As I said, I am more than happy to help Kamatari however I can, having some experience in starting a forum and an (albeit currently small) community myself, and apologise on behalf of some people more intent on derailing the thread and arguing that my opinion is wrong (when an opinion by definition cannot be wrong) as opposed to giving their own constructive criticism.
All I would say is give it a go - but as Brett says - maybe start informally to see if it could sustain \'critical mass\' to be viable - otherwise it will just cost you money and time and will dwindle like so many other forums started with the best of intentions.
The internet is littered with \'dead or dying\' forums because there aren\'t enough users for the content to seem up to date and exciting - and the intended audience for this will, by definition, be small.
Oh - and for the record - I believe John has had an FD and certainly owned a Cosmo before the FC - as in fact many members have had multiple rotary generations - only saddo\'s like me stick with the one genre ;)
Good luck with your endeavour - and don\'t take stuff too personally - this is a forum and you\'ve asked a question - expect some answers you might not like ;)
