Title: what would you do??
Post by: cyman on June 29, 2011, 10:37:31 AM
most people have probably seen my threads about knocking top mounts and me trying to source softer springs for my car.

now i dont want to go into specifics lets just say they i bought a complete rebuildable coilover setup that was supposed to have been rebuilt and revalved for the uk complete with top mounts they have been on the car since feb this year and ive covered around 3-400miles with them, these were bought through another rotary enthusiast forum.

well ive taken the rear coilovers off and found that the pillow ball top mounts have def gone (causing the knock) so have ordered new bushes from rhd at around £120 but also discovered that one of the shockers is leaking :( but worse than that i checked the compression of each shocker side by side to compare them to see if the leaking one had gone soft but to my horror ive found that they have a completly different compresion rate and i dont mean a little bit. the shocker that hasnt leaked is softer, if i sit on the floor with the shocker in front of me i can press down on the piston shaft and it lowers in a nice slow smooth motion but the one that has been leaking will not move. if i do the same thing to it i have to kneel up and literally put all my bodyweight onto the top of the piston shaft for it to move in v v slowly (and for those that have met me you know thats quite a bit of weight :) )
now ive spoken to the company who rebuilds these and the first thing he said was that it seems one of the coilovers still has the japanese valving in which makes it stupidly hard (part of the reason for a jaring ride on the road). all i can do is send both units off which will cost around £100 to sort out each unit but they will prob need to strip the good unit aswell to match valving to ensure its the same. so this is going to cost me around £220 minimum to sort out and more if they find any other issues.

so im haveing to spend £340 to fix this suspension set that i bought in good faith as a completly rebuilt revalved setup. i have pm\'d the chap and explained things and have asked him to do the right thing and am keeping my fingers crossed that we can come to an arrangement that is why i dont want to name and shame in this thread as it might be a simple mistake or he sold them on after being told they had been done when clearly they havent. so hopefully this thread will either have a full explanation and a thumbs up for the seller for helping me sort this out or it will just turn into a name and shame.

now heres the thing if he doesnt come good what should i do??? bearing in mind i have the ad stating they had been rebuilt etc i will have the report back from the company confirming my costs and what they have had to do to sort the leaking and valving out.........:confused:

to be honest, I dont buy or sell second hand suspension stuff anymore, its not worth the hassle, in the past I bought suspension found it was to stiff and too low got rid of it for peanuts so lost money there. Bought second hand mazdaspeed coilovers from Japan, never fitted them as I fitted my HKS stuff by then. Sold the mazdaspeed stuff on the forum, the buyer informed me they were faulty, gave him his money back and chucked the suspension in the bin.

My advice is always buy new in regards to suspension kits, used is not worth it.
The seller might be nice and give you some money back. But being second hand and sold as seen I dont think you have much of a case as they will counter saying you have a chance of inspecting before parting with cash.

Only Ohlins stuff is worth buying second hand , because they are rebuildable and you end up with an awesome kit

they are ohlins.

is it really a case as sold as seen or sold as described  (rebuilt and revalved)???

well how much did you pay for them?, they are around 2k for the coilovers and go up more with the ones with the remote reservoirs
If you bought them cheap and the £340 on top to repair they are still cheaper then 2K, you still have bought a bargain.
If there was no paperwork proving they were rebuilt then really it is sold as seen.
Its like when you buy a car and someone says genuine mileage, unless you have the full service history documentation to back it up, and you still buy it with no paper proof then really you dont have any come back.

If you paid over 1k for that suspension and it was fooked and the seller is on the forum and you dont get a small refund to cover some of the repair then I would be defo peeved off like you. So really it comes down to how much you paid?

i suppose the thing is i had a limited budget to get a set of suspension and if they had been sold as possibly needing a rebuild then i wouldnt of bought them. but as they were sold as completly rebuilt and revalved and that he had the paperwork somewhere but would have to find it and as he is a long time member both on here and the other forum then i had no reason to doubt him.

as far as original purchase value is concerned these are non adjustable looking tatty on the outside so does that really have a bearing on what i paid for them. especially as older ohlins sets havent been going for that much lately. i think the last excellent cond set the same as mine went for around the £600 and seeing as i paid around £500 for mine it would make them cost me well over £800 for them which they are never worth in a month of sundays.

at the end of the day its like anything we buy through these forums, regardless of cost when new you buy something as described and put a little faith in long term community members that they arent trying to pass on knackered items as rebuilt/refurnished perfect working order ones. or am i being to nieve about this???

well wait and see his reply to you, he may offer to take back the suspension and give you the money you paid for them. Then buy some new Tein Flex suspension for £750 instead.

is it me or do you seem very jaded today blitzboy  :)

well considering i have bought new bushes and they are on there way and the shockers are already on there way to be be sorted im not looking for a full refund just a reasonable contribution to sorting them out and maybe an explanation as to how they ended up this way. i just hope the chap who sold them is reasonable

I think Tein do rebuilds for something like £60 a shock and in that effect should come back like new, so if you Ohlins cost you £300 bringing the total to £800, you should still effectively have a new set for well under the £2k.

I would confirm the original owner has a rebuild receipt and if he doesnt i am sure Ohlins should have record of the refurb, if they dont, sounds like you have been led up the garden path, which obviously isnt nice.

If there is record of the refurb and its not long ago i am sure a reputable brand like Ohlins would rectify f o c the problems you now have.

well the seller has replied to my pm to him and is none to happy to say the least. i have either asked him to supply me with the reciept so i can go back to the place that rebuilt them and see if i can get the costs lowered which happens to be the same place i have sent them or if he cant produce it to contribute half to the costs of getting them to the condition they were supposed to be in when i bought them.

i think this is a pretty reasonable i hope he just chills a bit and can see it from my side aswell as his  :)

I\'d never buy second hand coilovers again unless they\'re rebuildable, but then you still have to consider that they might need rebuilding.

Tbh the Only way to solve this would have been to contact the seller and send them back straight away. If you\'ve put some miles on them
And they are broken, in the sellers eyes he may not be at fault. It sounds like one or two have been rebuilt and only partly, ie not including the top mounts.

Sounds like a bit of a ....ty situation really. Hope it all works out
