Title: Project Phoenix
Post by: Prof on June 25, 2011, 09:18:48 AM
Well, thought I\'d post up the first of a probably long build thread....

I managed to find a good shell - original plan was to cut the rear section off it to put on Rixxy, but it\'s too good to break, and in fact it\'s metal work is in much better condition than Rixxy.

I wasn\'t sure if the car was scrapped as far as the DVLA was concerned - so after some rummaging and a few dead ends, I tracked down the V5 and the car is now officially SORN and mine :)

The good news is that it\'s also a K reg, so quite a find - can\'t be many K reg vert\'s on the road - but there will probably be another by year end.

This has meant agonizing over what to do with Rixxy, but he\'s probably too far gone to economically repair, so it seems the right thing to do to take all his good bits and re engine the K reg vert with his heart and soul. :Thumbs-up

It means I get to have the shell completely sorted - welding, painting, and a re loom throughout - which means a very tidy and reliable car for me.

I\'ve already stripped most of the engine bay out - it will be a complete respray - and sorry guys, it\'s going to be going from Red to Black but not sure which Black yet - the options are:

Keep it Mazda PZ Black and relatively stock looking
Go Honda Pirates Black
Go Mazda PZ Black but with a blue fleck in the lacquer.

Body kit wise it won\'t be too leary:

Will probably GO GP Sports front and rear bumper, possibly side skirts. I have a few other goodies planned - but you\'ll have to wait for those ;)

Engine spec wise - it will be using the engine in Rixxy - but the target HP for this one will be as close to 400 at the fly as I can get with the main modifications to achieve that being:

Downpipe, manifold, WI and uprated ignition system and a different air intake - most of this is getting triallled on Rixxy - so he\'ll be going out on a glorious swan song - roll on 18psi for the end of summer :) :)

I\'ll be posting up some pics later - but this is just an appetite wetter for now... :3gears-rh:3gears-rh:3gears-rh

Good find! Keep it Mazda black, it\'s SUCH a nice black, and with more layers than the factory and some good treatment I think it\'ll gain so much depth!

Someone will buy Rixxy\'s shell, never fear, some people have fantastic fabrication skills! (ps, if there\'s a reasonable roof going spare, hook me up - mine is now very, very bad -  ripped all the way from 1 side pocket to the other under the rear screen etc)

I reckon it is one of the last - just trying to find out how late it is :)

I really don\'t think there is that much of it that\'s good :(

I will have wings and a bonnet from it, lacey is having the bumper and splitter, and there will be some bits and bobs - but most of the running gear and the engine will go onto the new beast.

I have a roof in the garage - has the usual splits - but the mechanism is solid, and the one on phoenix is also split but only a little on the passenger side and quite small rip on the drivers side - shame really.

Rixxy\'s cloth roof is going on Phoenix :)

I have seen a groovy finish for phoenix - just not sure what it would look like on the car - anyone any good at photoshop?

How much would you like for the least ripped one? I\'d just buy a tin of back to black and spray the entire thing repeatedly until it softens. Ideally I\'d get a mohair one, but that\'s a lot of money. If you\'ll do one cheap enough, then it\'s worth it as a stop-gap thing.

DVLA will tell you the date it was first registered if you put the reg in.

That\'s a hell of a lot of nail varnish you\'d have to buy!

I still vote black. But it\'s kinda cool (I prefer the 2nd one down):

Let me post up pics of the damage of the one that\'s on the car - I\'ve promised John the window top rubbers - either of this roof or the one in the garage.

The DVLA say 07/08/1992 for the date of 1st registration :)

As for the colour - yep - I like that one too.

The centre section of my roof (the removable bit) is fine, it\'s in pretty good condition, rubbers etc aren\'t bad, so not bothered about that.

Damn, that\'s a late reg! Must be post first-FD production surely?

Well it\'s wake up time for this thread !

Rixxy\'s engine died on the motorway coming back from Bournmouth just before Christmas - so I will have to rebuild it.

Phoenix still has a load of junk in him, and also the carpet and some interior trim still.

I need to comletely empty the shell, then remove the remaining wiring, hard fuel lines, brake lines, trim, carpet then the roof, doors and bonnet and boot.

He will then get mounted on a spit so I can see to the underside - full treatment going to happen on him - wire brush, welding, por15, undersealing.  Then tidy up and prime bits on the top - he\'s then going off to be painted - still to make my mind up about the colour but he\'s going to be black or very very dark purple/black - and it will be a full car respray - engine bay, inside the car, door trims, in and out of the doors, boot - you get the picture.  Every effort will be made to ensure he doesn\'t rot before I get change to really enjoy my labours...

Pics of him all stripped out will follow in a week or two (depending on weather and my convservatory build)...

Title: Time to ressurect this thread again - been a bit busy...
Post by: Prof on May 14, 2012, 12:37:00 AM
I\'ve been busy last weekend and a bit more after that stripping out the wiring looms from Phoenix, the carpet, seatbelt fasteners, pedal box and the last bits around the front. It\'s almost gutted inside now - apart from the hood motors and mechanism, but that\'s because the hood is still on it to keep it dry ;)

Here\'s some progress pics - not much rust at all inside, which is good news - there is a hint of it near the passenger door side sill, as you can just make our - don\'t know what I will find underneath until I get it on the spit jig.

There\'s a couple of external shots, and a pic of rixxy looking sad side by side - he\'ll be the donor for much of the mechanicals...

Some things to look forward to:

Electronically adjusted Konis (my own system), dual exhaust with dual Y valves, quad headlight\'s in the popups, may be HID and HID or HID and LED, not sure yet, bespoke ECU, odbII, hotwire MAF, igbt+plasma ignition, mini oil cooler replacement for the PS cooler, modified light switch, modified wiper switch...

I wish !

I am hoping I might get it done by Rotorstock, but it\'s a lot of work.  It certainly won\'t have the new ECU or some of the other mods on it by Rotorstock

Looking forward to the end product, are you upgrading the turbo?
Title: Project Phoenix
Post by: Prof on May 15, 2012, 12:17:42 PM
Not sure, I am convinced this one has much to give, and I\'ve only started to scratch it\'s surface (well hopefully not literally).  It has spooled to 1.2 BAR with the current intercooler, so with some WI on board and additional fuelling it should easily net the 400 I was looking for...

What turbo are you running? It\'s not a stock one with those figures is it?

Its a Hybrid, all the ease of a stock turbo fitment, with extra puff top end :)

No it\'s not, some kind of flowed hybrid?

Good work though mate, it\'s taking a while, but is definitely worth it! Let me know when Rixxy is coming apart though please, are you still happy to sell the drivers door? (Also, the 1/4 window from the passenger door would be really, really appreciated to replace the acrylic sheet I have in place atm)

There are some marks on the drivers door (where the previous owners kids banged it into a brick pillar), and it will be minus door card, possibly wiring loom, locks and other bits and bobs - but glass, motor and fittings can go with it - happy to do a deal on both doors - as I may struggle to sell the passenger one without some of it\'s glass.

I have some work to do on the conservatory (or her indoors will be beating me :rollin), but it won\'t be long before Rixxy get\'s parted :( He\'s been like and old friend, but his best bits will live on, and if he can keep other cars on the road too - even better. I was always against the clock with regards to rust on him, but phoenix has a better start in life and is 4 years younger too.

Time for an update.

Phoenix is looking a little bare !!

Still to come off the shell - front suspension, rear suspensuon, diff, fuel tank, front inner bumper iron, roof.  Not much to come off now before I get it on the spit roast - and if the weather is kind over the bank holiday weekend, I might just get it there.  Pictures to come this weekend depending on progress.

I have a lot of the parts for the new exhaust system now, custom stainless Y pipe 3" to 2x2.5" done (not by me), just got to order some stainless tubing and Y valves to do the back pipes.  I will be reusing the racing beat rear cans, but replacing all the pipework with 2.5" stainless.  Phoenix will be a dual exit at the back, but with 2 other exits under the car ;)

I\'m just weighing up braking options for the car, think it might be time to take the braking up a notch - but prices scare me silly.

I also have some plans for the turbo - but I\'m keeping that quiet until I know for sure the idea will pan out.

Phoenix will be running 4x800cc SARD\'s on a serial fuel system, a 9-12-16 volt power brick will feed the fuel pump ensuring proper fuel availability at all times and all loads.  Fuel pressure will be a few percent higher to allow for some headroom on the injectors at the top end.

In the mean time I continue to take bits off Rixxy - he\'s missing a lot of dash now and all the electronics are out....
