Title: Help with wheel colour choice
Post by: m1tch on June 24, 2011, 10:40:15 PM
Hi everyone,

I am going to be fitting some OEM FD wheels to my car (just noticed that I have an FD clutch and half the bridge ported engine is FD lol) anyhow, they are stock size but an 1" wider, so I get more grip for not much money, plus the 16s will mean its more geared for acceleration rather than looks.

Anyhow, as I don\'t need to fit them straight away I am going to clean them up and then paint them, was thinking about these colours (please remember that my car is gunmetal gray):

Ideas:

White
Matt black
Sprayed silver
OEM (nothing added)
Japanese gold (dark gold)

I am wanting my FC to look almost OEM (the only aftermarket bodykit I have on it is my Eibo sleek spoiler that is colour matched)

I was thinking japanese gold, which is darker than the Subaru gold, I have a photo of an FC running R32 GTR rims in dark gold and it looks good (they were the other rims I was thinking of getting)

I was kinda against black rims as it looks like you have no rims, so I thought maybe gloss black rims? It gives a bit of accent?

What colours do you think I should try? I would love to have gold centres and a silver lip, but the FD rims don\'t lend themselves to having a 2 tone like that.

Japanese dark gold! Should have made the thread into a Poll! Edit it quick before your 10 minutes are up :D

First off don\'t forget to buy some spacers. I had some FD wheels a while back in white. They looked cool enough but they didn\'t fit the front without spacers. The rears needed spacing out too so they suited the fronts.

I do like the Japanese gold colour but I think if I was you I\'d go with a lighter colour as your car is dark enough.

I already have a pair of +20s for the front, will get some for the rears at some point, the +20s on the OEM FC rims push them out to the arch, will see what the FD rims are like on the rear without spacers.

That gold is nice, not quite as bright as the usual \'scooby bling bling gold\'

Right, I am now thinking possibly gloss black centres with a silver lip (its easy to mask off the spokes on the FD rims it seems) apparently the dark gold is very hard to keep clean with all the brake dust :(

If you use a decent wheel wax when you clean then brake dust is no problem. I was using this on my last car - http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_194661_langId_-1_categoryId_165682 - Obviously that didn\'t kick out as much brake dust as an RX, but nevertheless it was good stuff.

Right, I have got my Efini rims now, I have cleaned them up a bit (removed a bit of corrosion) to make them back to \'used but acceptable\' quality, my car is all go and no show, so I don\'t want brand new looking wheels.

Here is some before and afters (only fitted the rears today - Efini centres being painted)

Before - 20mm spacer on the rear with OEM rims

After - spacer removed from the rear to be added to the front tomorrow

Also a pretty cool concept - FC/FD hybrid rim - looks really cool! lol

Powdercoated anthracite or bronze would go well IMO.

I put some pics in your thread in the technical bit, so check it out matey :)

Right I have fitted the 20mm spacers on the front, then fitted the rims:

There is an issue with fitment:

Wheel is proud of the wheel arch by about 10mm, wheel does clear the OEM strut tower, tyre does touch/is very close to the front of the arch liner.

Looks like I am going to have to just run OEM rims on the front and FD rims on the back (exactly what I didn\'t want) I might just change everything back to OEM.

The above photo is at OEM ride height btw

Run 10mm spacers, and pull your arch liners out?

I\'ve run without arch liners for over a year now, 2 MOT\'s and no problems. Alternatively, you could just cut the front section of the liners out.

By 10mm im meaning 10mms outside the edge of the arches, I think when I get my Ohlins suspension I might be able to run 15mm spacers or something which should clear everything with a smaller shock and spring combo?

Just painted and fitted the Efini centres :)

Ah right, you have to have 20mm spacers to clear the shock?

Maybe the ohlins have adjustable top mounts? Just add a little camber (not much, it really affects tyre wear IMO - bad on a daily driver like mine, I run no camber) and done.

Or you could go round to papercutouts house and steel his steels ;)

All go and no show? Why are you painting them then :P

Also if It\'s all go and no show why don\'t you just bung the fd wheels on the back and keep the fronts stock? Thinner lighter wheels will have less resistance/inertia on the strip and the fd wheels can give you the extra grip for launching etc. Or you could just run a bit of stretch on the front with the fd rims

In fact, if you want light wheels, you want Mitsubishi Starion rims, even the 8J\'s are uber light, the 7J\'s are fantastic, best looking and lightest (probably) oem wheel EVER!

Ben, you\'re a comedian ;)

I was thinking that, but I REALLY don\'t want to have to keep taking the front passenger side rim off, the stud isn\'t the best so with the spacers fitted everything bolts to the spacer, therefore a better thread. I REALLY don\'t want to have to remove the spacer and refit the OEM rim, will have to see I guess :(
