Title: Heat light
Post by: framey on June 16, 2004, 11:41:57 PM
Hi Guys,
I\'ve done a search already and all the previous "heat light" problems seem different to mine.

Basically, it comes on when I turn on the ignition, and stays on.
No flashing - not rpm related cold and hot. As far as I\'ve noticed it\'s never come on before.

My car\'s totally unmodified. It has an auto box.
Did notice when off the throttle slowing down the car seems to "lurch" a little more than normal, but this may just be me.

What\'s this light mean anyway?

Any ideas?
Cheers

Could be a blocked cat mate. That would produce LOTS of heat in the exhaust... get it checked out if I were you... maybe time to purchase that cat replacement pipe you\'ve always wanted :D

Not that I know much about this stuff, but I sort of ruled that out as the light comes on straight away - basically it never goes out as soon as the ignition is turned on.

I\'m kinda hoping it\'s a bad connection/relay? Does anyone know where the signal comes from for this warning light?

Can\'t really get rid of the cat unless I get another ecu, can !?
I\'m sure I read somewhere that the stock ecu couldn\'t handle getting rid of the cat?

Will it pass the mot without it? (it\'s a 92 3rd gen). I\'m getting it mot\'d on Monday.

Any advice appreciated

Cheers

It could well be a stuck / damaged sensor, but without having it checked out dunno how ya gonna find out.

Has it done that since day one?

whats ya exhaust running like.. is it RED hot?

What\'s your boost like do you know?

Well a lot of the people in the US run decat on a stock ecu, so it\'s possible. I\'m getting rid of mine for a Power fc & decat thou. No it probably wouldn\'t pass the mot with a decat unless you had the Powerfc to adjust it for mot..

really is getting it checked out.. even if its a dodgy sensor.. there\'s quite a few places round kent that\'ll have a peak at it for ya...

Theres no requirement for a cat for a car of your year, so you wont get an instant fail (like a \'96+ car would/should). It will just depend what the emissions are like, but I believe the tolereances for a non-cat test are pretty relaxed.

Thanks for the info guys.

The boost is unchanged, I havent got a boost gauge yet but it seems just the same.
I\'ll check out the exhaust, but haven\'t noticed anything.

This just started yesterday - havent noticed the "heat light" ever before.

I did notice when I was getting a new back box fitted a couple of months ago, that there was a small pipe off it looked like it attached to the exhaust near the cat. Anyway as the car was running fine I didn\'t pursue it. (I did notice the car was hanging onto the gears longer - higher revs I mean, bt that\'s all)

Cheers

Aye, cheers.
I\'m getting a service and getting them to put it through the MOT, so finger crossed.
I\'ll let you know how I get on.

If all\'s well I\'ll post some pictures up of my car too!!

Cheers

Saw in the mitchells maintenance manual, that there is a "Heat sensing unit" under the rear centre console panel.

I\'ll probaly try and take a look at it later tonight.

Anyone familiar with it?

Is it easy to lift this panel?

Thanks

(sorry to keep banging on about this but I have a long journey tomorrow, so I\'d like to get rid of this pesky warning light!)
