Title: Practical to swap out the subframe with engine in place?
Post by: Aubec on June 16, 2011, 09:30:15 PM
Hi chaps, my front subframe looks a little crusty - just wondering if its practical to change it without pulling the engine?

Was thinking if I could jack at the gearbox  as if I was swapping engine mounts then I could just unbolt it, drop it and reinstall a nice, low mileage and newly powdercoated one?  Only thing is not sure where I\'d put axle stands if the subframe was out...

thats how i would do it,  you could put the axle stands at the jacking points on the chassis,  if you are worried about damaging the chassis you can spread the weight with a piece of wood up agains the seam.

you will probably need to have your alignment done again

I\'m going to be installing newly polybushed arms all round anyway, so would probably do it all at once, and then only have to pay for alignment once too!

BUT one project at a time, need to get my turbo installation finished!
