Title: Car names
Post by: Lil-Steve on June 15, 2011, 02:01:22 PM
Ok this may sound childish to some but I\'ve not settled on a name for my FD and I\'ve had her for 3 years now, it was easy to name my old cars but nothing has really stuck. :o

I was wondering if some of you could enlighten me with you car\'s name and how/why it got that name?

We used to call my old Supra "the Falcon" from time to time en hommage to the Millenium Falcon --> fast but ultimately unreliable.

I think people who don\'t name their vehicles are either soulless cads or just really, genuinely odd :D.

My car is called Ruby. Cos she\'s red, and a complete fduking biatch. It\'s short for Rubysaurus Rex (which is my wife\'s fault :o) and also short for Ruby Ruby Ruby ahhhahhhhhhhhhahahah Do Yer Do Yer Do Yer...which is another story entirely.

My last one was called the Armageddon Rag after the book of the same name in which the \'hero\' drove an RX-7. Errrm, called Daydream as it goes, but it was "only" a 1st Gen anyway. Mine was called that cos it was apocalyptically loud and made my ears bleed and my head vibrate, as much as anything.

If that made sense, you must be on the same prescription as me, what are the odds :rollin

Nik it seems were not too disimilar I tend to anthropomorphise just about anything and can often be seen patting the cars\' roof after a reliable drive and huggling the steering wheel after a "mad half hour".

(Though with my seating position you don\'t really get a choice on whether you hug the steering wheel or not... diddy legs and all that)

I rather liked Sadako but it\'s too evil and Rita but that\'s cliche\'d now because of the Alton Towers ride.....

As you can probably tell sanity and I don\'t see each other as often as we might :Hammer

Hmm I must be souless an odd! I\'ve never named any of my cars probably because they don\'t deserve a name, think if I had to give it a name rusty or scrappy come to mind! The gf calls the ford puma Philip for some reason... I think that\'s odd! :chat

Yeah, you\'re weird lol :rollin

My wife\'s feelthy Hahhhhhhnda is called Rastas. Not through any spurious racism, but it\'s because that\'s what his number plate spells. Her old (whispers) Renault was called Uncle Jaffa because... that\'s what his number plate spelled. Can you see a pattern emerging lol

My current bike is called Lady because she\'s a fine young filly with a wasp waist and delicately curving flanks and a come-to-bed voice and... ooooh, I think I might have to go for a lie down :o

My first 3rd gen was called Shiela, no idea why I just chose it.  My rx8 was Roxanne but that was because of the number plate had rox in it and Chloe is my current FD because it makes me feel safe after the first 7 caught fire and hit a wall lol :)

My crap daily drivers tend to have boy names, like Kevin my primera :)

Im odd too, have never named a car, nor have ever referred to a car as "she"

A car is an "IT" it is an object, some names I have called it are a PITA, complete B stard, POS, worthless piece of cow manure that is a never ending money pit.

I find naming a car strange, you name pets not cars.

I think cars can have a personality as much as pets do, my goldfish I would say has less personality than my car :o

Ghats because the goldfish will have forgotten that it had a personality once it was hatched then has spent all the rest of the time trying to remember what it forgot but then forgot again as to what it was trying to remember, a perpetual loop if you like?

My RX8 doesn\'t have a name but my Mondeo gets called Dave by my missus.  It\'s because he\'s reliable, useful but unexciting and that\'s how she sees people called Dave.

Do you remember the pot noodle advert where the guy in the advert had a mate called Dave? Maybe that\'s why she calls it dave? Lol

Um... we call it Rex.  Not massively imaginative.  We call the Mini, Mini.  And the Volvo, Volvo.  I suspect if I bought a Range Rover it would be Rangie, and if I bought a Jaguar it would be "The Jag"

But the Fiat500 is my wife\'s so its called Ruby for obvious reasons.

EDIT: Not that obvious if I forget to mention it\'s red... doh.

I never named my Nova properly it was refered to by friends and my self as \'the Nove\' the FC egi never really got a name other than \'the rex\' the was a pattern emerging but then my first 106 gti was so much hassle I sold it in weeks and never bonded. The second one I had for 2+ years was referred to as \'pugo\' although the mrs used to make new names up for it everyday.

As most of you know I haven\'t met my TII yet but have provisionally named her \'Roxy\' going with the \'puggo\' theme being close to the cars name or make and \'Roxy\' has both the letters \'R\' and \'X\' in.

Not creative I know but effective!

For the first few weeks we called our Xtype Jaguar "The Jag"; now it\'s called the Enterprise, part from the aircraft carrier and part Star Trek.

Fast, quiet, powerful (relative term) comfortable and steers like a 342m long boat. :D

Well, I can say one thing... I\'m not using my plate to name mine! LOL
but I must say, when it doesn\'t start or the battery has been drained again, it probably gets prety confused with the amount of names I throw at it in the space of a minute!! LOL

Ah, but there are 342m long boats and 342m long boats, although an aircraft carrier would always be referred to as a ship because it\'s a commissioned warship, you don\'t call them warboats.  I haven\'t ever been aboard an American Aircraft carrier, but I\'ve drive the (only remaining) British Aircraft carrier several times and she handles very well.  400m turning circle and stopping distance from top speed (Imagine turning an RX7  180  degrees at 150 mph in twice its own length or stopping in the same distance) and when I was on there it had it\'s own squadron of strike jets.

Ralph is called Ralph because his engine goes Ralph Ralph Ralph Ralph Ralph (well, when he isn\'t throwing a water spraying too hot hissy fit anyway)! :D

Polo is called Geraldine, she is the first girl car I\'ve ever had and I dunno why she\'s called that...it just suits her.  The homicidal golf\'s name has been wiped from my memory as he doesn\'t deserve a name after running me over and my first car was called Crispen because at the time I had 2 crushes on 2 famous blokes, one named Christian and one named Ben.  Simples!! ;)

Cheers

Tom

[EDIT] my Honda Prelude i called Joey, my Golf VR6 is called Gerald. My GTO was called Buddy. I just name my cars from their behavior and looks :D

Well, i just call my cars bigBeemer and little Beemer.

I had Ford Sierra. I used to call it just lots of Fin curse words. Mostly because it was crap and because of numberplate. :)

Also i had Audi Coupe, and numberplate spelled "paintbrush".

My brothers rx-7 is called Mankeli, comes from Mazda and Wankel...

Currently the family fleet are named as follows:

86 EGI = Mindy (after Mindy Macreedy in kickass)
88 EGI = Daphne (after Daphne in True Blood)
Diesel Yaris = Yugi Yaris
Octavia = Olga Octavia
Ford Galaxy = Galaxar as it is massive and Galaxar sounds like a massive planet eating thing to me :)

This is why my Skoda, my first car, was called Norman. That and the number plate ended in NAW.

Car\'s and other inanimate objects do need names :)

My mums old mk2 Escort was called Brian, after the magic roundabout character because it was slow as a snail, lol.

I called one of my mx5s \'Molly\' because the number plate was irish and had the number 4130, which is a code for a chrome-molybdenum steel commonly used for making bmxs, also known as \'cro-molly\'.

In fact the only car i\'ve never named is my current Alfa daily hack, I generally just call her \'Alfa\', though often said in a silly over the top husky passionate voice.

I think I\'m on a par with Ada7 here :rollin

The only car I\'ve named to date was \'Blossom\' an old LPG powered Volvo I had many moons ago..... it  was painted in the very retro,  bright orange, popular in the \'70\'s. ( The Orange Blossom Special ) :Thumbs-up
