What sort of figures are being got out of forced induction Rx8\'s these days guys?

Looks like the Pettit racing supercharger kit gives about 300bhp, which is where my OEM FC setups limit is before I start going aftermarket:

I\'d like a reliable 300 BHP from my FC... When I finally get it.

As far as RX8\'s go, are there many turbo ones about? Only famous RX8 I know is \'mad mikes\' nfs one. That\'s 4 rotor though not turbo, or is it turbo? Can\'t remember, most people boosting RX8\'s are using 13b-rew engines arent they?

Could be talking anus mind?!

The Pettit Racing Supercharged ones are making 330 bhp or so if they\'re well set up.  Similar figures on the Greddy Turbo as well.  All on the stock fuel system too.  Esmeril Racing reckon they\'ve got 414rwhp out of theirs but it\'s not been reliable.  Mad Mike\'s RX8 is a 20b with a T51 and about 700 bhp.  Because the RX8 motor has higher compression rotors it doesn\'t take kindly to big boost without taking it apart and sticking lower compression rotors in.  Also there are issues with port cooling at high boost on the stock engine.  A reliable 300 bhp is relatively straightforward on a stock motor but more than 400 bhp and you\'re looking at significant internal work on the motor.

300 rear wheel or flywheel buddy?

Pettit reckon their supercharger produces 280-290rwhp on 95 octane but I am pretty certain that Tango Tony\'s 8 has 330 rwhp running the supercharger with an HKS F-Con 5.  California Style\'s one is probably about similar levels if not a bit more because he\'s got a Pettit Racing ported and blueprinted motor in his and is running a very unrestrictive exhaust.  But they\'ll be running higher octane fuel.  Any higher and you\'ll need bigger injectors.

Anybody know what power figure Exiled Viking has? His is a Supercharged 8 and looks amazing to boot.

There is the JIC RX8 D1 GP car pumping out 520hp and 370 ft/lb, but I believe that it\'s a REW rather than an MSP engine.

JIC RX8 D1 car had a 13b-REW.

Exiled Viking was Tango Tony, he\'s changed his name a couple of times.

So which part is the limiting factor for more bhp, high compression rotors?

There is a guy over on the RX8OC thats just had some more work done to his and says its potting down over 400 on a high boost setting

What sort of power is that then, if you know?

I believe so, but also the pathetic side exhaust ports are big too wimpy for higher temperatures??

Tony\'s car had 330 hp.

The cooling around the exhaust ports is insufficient to cope with big boost without a bit of modification. I know pettit racing\'s engines are modded to cope with this.

to get more power out of the renesis block why dont they just peripheral port the exhaust, get loads of gas flow then!!

If you do that then you might as well just use a 13B-RE or a 13B-REW since you\'ll need new manifolds, you might as well use the older housings.  But to get big power you\'d either port for lots of overlap and lose decent idle and low end power or stuff a huge turbo on it and get lots of boost and then you get a big horsepower figure but a massive step in power delivery that\'s virtually unmanageable in all but a straightline.

On that basis of swapping out, are they directly interchangeable of would you need large amounts of fab work?

You\'d need the same as what you would for any engine swap really - loom, possibly custom mounts, new exhaust, ECU etc

I\'m sure it can be done, splicing the 8 ecu to run the engine would be an expensive and long task. Easier to use a separate e u all together just for the engine.

With money anything is possible.

Be far easier and cheaper to buy an FD and build it for power.

It don\'t understand how would that be different with a MSP vs REW engine? You use excatly the same tuning principals.

Yeah i hear that, but after 2 fd\'s and a fc they have run their course and done to death imho!

Ive just heard through the grapevine re-worx have done this, mating an Rx8 subframe to Fd one.

I appreciated nothing is as easy as it sounds and work/money is required, but would be nice to have something a little different.

Anyone know the limiting factor of the drive train on the 8 or is it very similar in respect of the fd\'s hp handling capabilities?

The gearbox is quite tough, it\'s an Aisin unit and I am pretty sure it is in the S2000 and even the meaty ones of them are running stock boxes, the 8\'s diff is also pretty tough too.  The prop shaft is a ninja carbon fibre jobbie so is also up to big power.  I reckon that Mazda were starting to spec it up with a target power of 300bhp in mind but turned it back for whatever reason, probably emissions related or somesuch enviro-bunkum.  Several of the uprated cars I\'ve seen have been entirely standard other than the turbo and not had any problems coping with 300 hp.

Thanks Will, seeing as you seem to be the 8 aficionado :Thumbs-up do you know if there are any fi\'d ones on the south coast and the members lurk on here?

On the south coast there is at least one I can think of, he\'s in Portsmouth and has a Turbo that was built and tuned by Re:Worx.  There\'s Tekken who is in South London who has a very nice turbo again built by Re:Worx, he\'s been on here but is quite busy at the moment and doesn\'t post on here or the RX8OC Forum much although he is still around the place.  California Style on here is Pettit Racing UK\'s main man and his RX8 has pretty much all their toys on it, it\'s not been on a Dyno as far as I know but he\'s got to have 330+ whp and is looking for more when they finish developing the stage III Pettit Supercharger kit, although he\'s in North London.  Having applied my "highly scientific" backside dyno to his car it\'s got so much more mid-range thump than a stock RX8, the power is there in greater quantities whatever the revs and stays there right up to 9000 rpm.  There\'s a chap with an Supercharged RX8 in Bognor Regis somewhere but I don\'t think he posts on here much and he\'s out of the country a lot.  Exiled-Viking/Tango Tony/T200CAD (whichever username he\'s using at the moment) lives up North but likes to get about the country with his.

Re:Worx have done several Turbo conversions on the RX8 as well but I don\'t know of many other than the ones mentioned.  I did meet a chap at a trackday who had one which he had dynoed at 360 whp but he was having boost control problems and wasn\'t running it hard that day.
