Title: RX7 FD Engine Pull
Post by: - Fezcat - on June 13, 2011, 01:53:54 PM
Hi guys - Kinda looking for a fairly quick answer, Im in the middle of trying to get my engine out.

Ive disconnected everything under the car and in the engine bay ready.

Im going to do it gearbox still attached as it seems to be the simplest way (http://www.fduk.org/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)

the Engine is moving, but gearbox wise there appears to be a huge brace  running from the rear of the gearbox to the diff, with a few rather  large bolts I take it this needs to be removed to drop the gearbox out  with the engine intact?

Correct the RX7 has the same \'spine\' powerplant frame as the MX5 (guess what I drive..) has, unless you\'re going to try and remove the diff through the engine bay!

On the plus side if its anything like the 5\'s one it two long bolts on the gearbox which have captive nuts on top, possible a 3rd bolt on a support.

undo the bolts on the clutch pressure plate, throw the little inspection hole and engine will come out with gear box still in

You don\'t need to do the clutch if you\'re leaving the box on as Fezcat is thoiugh dude.

Ben - Yeah, that\'s the PPG. There are 4 bolts at the front, 5 at the rear  - 21mm IIRC.

Undo the front 4 - two at the bottom, then 2 hidden up nearer the shifter (you\'ll need a longish extension bar, and they\'re RFT.)
You\'ll then probably need someone under the car and/or a jack to wiggle the studs free from the tail of the box and seperate it from the PPF. Make sure you support the PPF when the engine\'s out or you\'ll put loads of strain on the diff mounts

The prop will just slide out as it just pushes into the tail of the box (onto splines)

You\'ll probably have most issues with the engine mounts, but just keep wiggling and levering and they\'ll come out. I\'d make sure that you have a helper, as it will make it SO much easier - it\'s a bit of a bugger taking the engine out with the box still on if you\'re solo.

watch for the "slight" gear box oil leak when you pull the prop shaft out of the g box

Just make sure that all axle stands are correctly placed and stable before doing anything :) safety first!

Cheers for the comments guys :)

unfortunately due to some old damage to one of the boltst :( the front engine lifting hook has snapped one of the two bolts holding it in place :(

Anyone had this before and how did you overcome the problem? :(

Nope engine and gearbox out as one, I found that was much easier than splitting the two.

Engine wouldnt come off her mounts so I undid the mounts from the bottom of the engine and out she came, easy as pie :)

what does the groove look like in the irons ?

Is it just the soft seal that\'s gone ?

Just the soft seal, its not corroded or anything that I can see :) However before I put it back together, im taking all of the parts to either hayward or another rotary specialist nearer to have it checked :)

No point in building :censored::censored::censored::censored:!

Yarp going with an extended street port (did think about half bridge though...)

Some nice stuff going on. Ignore the talk by somebody with a blue avatar on DW. He just likes to argue with rubbish facts that won\'t help people trying to get good info.

Also Pineapple used to have a really good video series about inspecting all the engine parts for damage.
