Hey guys
Just thought I would introduce myself. I\'m going to look at a fd
Tomorrow, jap import in silver, With a street port. I\'ve always wanted to own one of these and only just considered taking the dive to get one. I think the whole issue of reliability was the thing that put me off. But the one I found comes with a fresh rebuild and two year guarantee which is what I think is selling it to me.
I guess I will fire away with my first question. I will be using this as a daily driver and I will prob be doing 500 miles max a month. I know these need a bit of maintenance, which Im happy to do, as will be worth it. But my question is will I always be worrying and in and out of garages, if I keep the general maintenance and servicing up ? Or will I be ok till the next 60 k mile rebuild ?
Anyhows to show how genuinely interested I am in this I\'m doing a two hour there and back trip to see the fd tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes.
Ryan
Welcome to the club :wave
6000 miles a year isn\'t a huge amount if thats what you think you\'ll be doing. As long as you let the car warm up and warm down after a drive you should be ok. Plenty of people do use them as daily cars, its just whether you can afford to with the cost of fuel.
Are you in the Ash near Aldershot?
Adam
Hey Adam
Yes I am. I actually lived in Guildford for 22 years till recently. Yeh i dont plan on doing many miles, i generally just do ash to guildford and back 5 times a week. Ive just heard so many nightmere storys about these cars and the reliablity. but ive come To the conclusion as long as i keep ontop of things i should be fine. Im pretty sure ive actually seen your car if its the black one in the pic parked in the multi by the odeon in guildford. Out of interest is there a local rotary engine specialist round this area ? I looked online but couldn\'t find one.
Ryan
Which car u going to see? Nearest specialist to u is reworx
I\'m going to see a fd in Coventry, The company selling it is called Hurley rotars it is 5500. With a fresh engine build, street port. So they will give me 2 years guarantee or 24000 miles which ever is 1st. It sounds like a good buy to me, but Im still new to these cars and prices. they said compression test was high 6s/7s but is like to go up as the engine isn\'t bedded in yet.
Does this sound about right ?
Ryan
I have a mate who bought a red FD which had a hurley engine. Took it to hurley for a service (which is a condition of the warranty that they service it) and on the way home from the service, it ....ed all it\'s oil out of the oil filter which seemingly wasn\'t done up. Did they honour the warranty? Not a chance. This was a few years back and maybe it\'s all changed now?
Welcome! :D
Crikey thats not great story to hear :D as I will be looking at one of there cars, I wouldn\'t be getting it serviced by then any how\'s reworx is a 3rd of the way.
Do those compression figures sound about right ? There\'s varying opinions everywhere I look.
Any hows i will defrinay be buying with head rather than heart as I\'ve had a enough bad car experiences recently. Fingers crossed it will be good tho.
I suggest you do some searching on here about hurley and make up your own mind. Bear in mind people can say anything when they\'re trying to releive you of your hard earned!
Welcome to MRC.. Hope you have a great time here!
Mir
As jit says the nearest specailist, and the one i use is ReWorx in Portsmouth. Good lads who\'ll look after all your FD needs :)
If you want to come say hi (even if you haven\'t got a car by then) then come to the Guildford meet on the 12th and you can look around a few cars and ask as many questions as you like
Adam
Cheers for all the replys guys. I went to see the fd today and really did like it. It was in really good condition. I get mot and tax with the car + 1st service free. So it all sounds good. The engine seemed to run fine and pull through out. Only problem was it was raining and couldn\'t really open it up to it\'s full. But there seemed to be all ok.
Just a case of seeing If I can come up with the funds now. Cheers for the invite Adam. I will defiantly come to meet. Where is it located and what time?
It\'s shame I didnt decide on getting a fd a while back or I could have spoke to you guys at japfest.
Ryan
Here you go http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70571
welcome to MRC and all that, come along by there and chat FDs and you\'ll soon know errrr...more than you do now hahaha

Welcome to MRC Ryan,
All sounds O/K, I send a lot of people off to Hurleys depending on their location so you should be fine,
I\'m sure you will enjoy your car should you end up with it as an FD is still an awful lot of motor car :D
Welcome to the forum. I\'m also relatively new to the forum and I seem to have started a trend. Ever since I joined up loads of people in the local area seem to be getting FD\'s And there I was thinking I was gonna be different lol. Gonna become common as muck before long lol. I will also be at the Guildford meet so look forward to meeting ya. And you are only up the road from me too. Im in Camberley. And I work even closer to you in Frimley Green
hey guys im a little unsure of power in these cars at the moment ? i keep reading different figures and am im teretsed if anyone can help ? the rx7 in uk has less power than the jap ones it seems by around 25 bhp but this is because it restricted by a extra cat ? also with a streetport on a standard rx7 would it make around 300 bhp as this is what the seller is claiming ? also 0 -60 times seem to confuse me at the mo as i am findin anything from beetween 4.8 - 6-3 which is quite a difference. i was under the impression it was close to 5.2 apx ?
i keep looking but finding differnt answers everywhere and though i would just ask you guys. hopefully i will be seeing you at the guildford meet in my own one :D
Mazda claimed 5.2 seconds to 60mph. UK cars do make less power than imports, think the pre-cat in the downpipe doesn\'t help and they have a load of emissions-based shlte to screw things up too, as well as presumably a softer map to cope with lower RON fuel. 255 was the claimed power figure for a stock Type R (though that happens to also be the upper limit of the gentleman\'s agreement between Jap manufacturers at the time. Skylines especially were often well above that off the shelf.)
Eminently possible to get to 300 bhp on of a streetport, but only safely with good supporting mods. If that\'s all they\'ve done, maybe best to shop around a bit more...
is this Guildford meet just for rx7\'s or all welcome ? as i have a rx8 !
thanks
Thanks for the reply. What sort of supporting mods need to be done as I will find out ? and I don\'t know about the meet mate but I believe there was a link posted on this post.
I\'d say Guildford meet is come one come all. But then Im not the organiser of it. Its under the monthly meets section.
Supporting mods would be boost and fuel control (generally requiring an aftermarket programmable ECU). You\'d probably be OK on standard fueling system, though you\'d want it to be in good condition. The fuel filter is an utter arse to change, ask when it was last done and if he doesn\'t know then get it done ASAP. If it has exhaust and induction mods already then you definitely need to get it set up with a programmable ECU because the stock one really can\'t cope too well with that much deviation from stock. Turbo rotaries are very sensitive to spark plug condition (and also very hostile to spark plug longevity), can be £100 for a new set of plugs so worth checking they\'ve been changed recently (ever!). There are a zillion threads on this on here, mostly written by better minds than mine, the search button is your friend lol
As to Guildford, AFAIK, all are welcome! :Thumbs-up
Hey guys just a couple of questions.
Is a 1992 jap import a effini ?
Can you uprate a pre 1995 fd to match the power in the pater models ?
Are the silver fds less popular for any reason as i see less of them on forums?
And id the guildford meet a ongoing monthly thing ? As i wasnt able to make it this time.
Thats it hopefully selling my little del sol soon and can join you guys.:D
Afaik, a \'92 import is always an efini. The early models are only just under the later models, and shouldnt need much to get them up a bit. Not sure about the silver question =S
Biggest difference between the pre 96 and later models is the improvement to the turbo pack and plumbing which is more efficient and more powerful along with a 16 bit ECU which is probably better to. Think the doors were also lighter :0)
Within the FD world I don\'t think anyone considers any one model any inferior to another power wise because as soon as you start to modify the original hp figures go out of the window
Good luck with your purchasing and welcome :)
Hey guys what are people paying for a rebuild on there engine ? I\'m seeing prices on websites for 3000 + vat does that sound right ?
hello thats right and can cost more all depends who you go to ,
fd are expensive to run and maintain but are nice cars,
just make sure who ever you go to that they honour there engine warranty and get that in writing .
i had a bad experience in the past with a well known builder , everything was going fine when i spent over £8000 on rebuild , after i done 950 miles had a slight oil leak
called him up he came to look and said he will sort it out in the end he said he will have to service it and do a oil change which will come to £200,:Nono!
from that moment i said just fix the problem considering i have not even reached 1000miles, he just said it going to cost you either way OR GO FIX IT YOURSELF:WaveBye
dont get me wrong he builds good engines but mine had teething problems and if i didnt show money he wasnt interested.
SO BE WARNED DONT GET SUCKED INTO WHAT YOUR ENGINE BUILDER CAN DO TO YOUR CAR:Talking1 , ITS WHAT YOU WANT DOING ON YOUR CAR:yes
its a good job i know basic mechanics and i took his advice and did fix it myself :rollin, it just turned out to be a leaky oil sender sensor which i changed for a new one and at the same time i did a oil change and fitted a oil catch tank.
sorry to go on my point is do your research on a good engine builder also learn alot about your car i spent around £9000 on rebuild and now i have had my car for a year and been on mrc fduk for the same time i could have got the parts much cheaper and spent half of the money:Hammer
Quote from: RyanT;769741Hey guys what are people paying for a rebuild on there engine ? I\'m seeing prices on websites for 3000 + vat does that sound right ?
That is about right, although it is generally a starting figure as until you get the engine apart you never know what parts will need replacing.
And as your rebuilding anyway you may as well get some porting done and before you know it you have spent more than the car is worth!
You could also just sell your broken engine and buy a working one that has less mileage on it, may cost you more in the long run but that is the gamble you take
Chris
whats all this talk of rebuilding the engine? Surely not already?
Ryan - that\'s about right for a standard rebuild, in fact that\'s what mine was from Hurley / Mick a few years ago. They can build engines without doubt, sadly it\'s their after-sales service / problem solving and fixing that leaves a lot to be desired! ;P

I am the victim of not the same scenario but similar scanario loll. I know one rotary engine builder who treated me completely unprofessionally-very unprofessional man. All he was interested in money :bandit. So research is very important...

No I havnt purchased it yet mate, I\'m looking at high insurance costs at the moment. Which I could get round, but Now covering everything before I purchase, rebuild Costs I wouldn\'t be able to budget for these at the same time. which is worrying me a little and deffinatly the only thing holding me back from purchasing the car. I was budgeting 2.5 k apx for 60k miles. But Seeing 3.5 - 9000 is scary stuff
Ryan - and rx7 for around the 5k mark, poss even less TBH on a new build or recent with compression results of mid to high 7\'s is all good for several thousands of miles ;)
There\'s plenty out there, just search around and buy with your head... not your heart ;)

I Second that ;)
sorry about all the questions guys and thak you for the replys. i just like to cover everything before i spend out a car that has the potential to be very costly. how come if places are doing rebuilds for apx 2.5 k that people are paying thousands more than that then ? i can understand a litle more work needing doing but 9000 is just unbelivable :S i like to be able to drive fast quite a lot. is this the sort of car that everyone who owns one panics everytime they put there foot to the floor ?
many thanks ryan
I expect the equation may be more like "pay 2.5 for a Hurleys rebuild and then paying 3+k for someone else to do it properly a few months later". Or cut out the middle man and spend more to do it properly in the first place. But then, I know fduking nothing so don\'t listen to me
Mate, if you want a reliable car then you have to invest in a reasonable way! I know someone in London area who would rebuild your engine (stock) and would give you warranty for 12 months... I wouldn\'t think that he would charge you more than 2500pounds. He can also port the engine and recently he worked on my mates fd, he changed fuel filter, installed diff brace, took the whole subframe off and treated the sump leak along with putting a sump brace, sorted his battery in the boot and some more work, for everything he charged him 150 pounds.... Very competent lad.. I highly recommend him!
Mir
sorry i forgot to mention that i did have a single turbo conversion supplied and fitted at the same time has the fresh engine rebuild why it came to around £9000
like the other mrc members are saying take your time and look around there are plenty very good quality rx7s with recent rebuilds .:Thumbs-up
So do you guys ever drive these cars and feel comfortable there not going to blow all the time or is there always a feeling that everytime you put your foot down the engine might let go ?
i always drive mine , these cars are ok just need a bit more looking after and they will last a long time :Thumbs-up
Lifes too short! Mine have been weekend toys so I only get in them when Im in the mood. So when they do get driven, they get driven hard - thats the great thing about Rotaries is that you can drive them pretty damn hard and as long as the cooling and tune is up to scratch, itll take it all in its stride. If youre unsure, then a buy a standard ish FD. They can take a lot of hard driving. Like Darren said above, service them regularly and keep an eye on the oil level and a good RX7 will see you right
Has anyone got a list or a link to the different colours that where available as I keep seeing bright White and like a off White cream and was wondering if one was standard and the other sprayed ect ?
Have noticed differences with the rear lights where these redesigned for later models ? If so are they just straight swap over ?
Many thanks Ryan
Yep they are. You just have to undo a few screws, slide the units out and swap them over.
Some people have modified the units they have now to look like \'99 spec ones by carefully removing the plastic front and changing the coloured panels inside.
If you do a search on here you should find a couple of threads showing how its done.
Or just buy some replacements if you dont want the hassle
Adam
Thanks mate that\'s good to know. The redesigned ones look a lot better in my opinion. Just had a search and it seems extreamly easy swap. Altho I did come across some other variants, the LED ones are kool not my sort of thing tho.
Many thanks Ryan
Hey guys could use some advise and general info on rx7s and the one I\'m looking at, also it would be kool to meet some of the local members, any one in the Guildford area fancy beer this weekend.
