Cool project :)

I\'ve not seen those wheels before, I presume they\'re aftermarket? Have you got much rust to deal with, or is it a case of put it back together and make faster? What\'s your brothers plan for her?

Looking forward to more pictures :)

Not sure about those wheels. But we were told that they were secondary wheels with winter tyres. Primary wheels are those rotor looking things. Amazing thing is that they are in very good condition. :)

She is still in very very good condition. No rust at all. I swear that she is in better condition than my Beemers! :)

Well, still lots of work. Rollcage, welding(to make her more harder), modifications for axels, rebuild the engine, new diff, remowe old electric, lose more weight, rebuild brakes and cluch...

We do have carbonfibre bodypanel models ready but we might have to do them again... :(

Quite like the look of the secondaries too but those rotar rims are really nice - had a chance to buy a set last year but had other priorities to deal with.
Looks sturdy enough already and good to hear she is solid.
Keep the photos coming and things develop (another Gold resto there Steve)

Yes, and those rims are in very good condition. Rotor rims are good too. I wonder how much money they are worth...? :)

Just checked, she only has about 145000km on the clock. When my brother bought it, she had 113000. Engine braked in about 120k km. Carb was broken and tuned wrong. Then engine was rebuilded and ported. And carb was rebuilded too. After that she was my brothers everyday driver for 1 and half years. Then my bros race car broked and rx became a project. First modifications were custom intake and carbs and custom headersand and exhaust.

The set I was looking @ were to be imported from Japan and the price was (door to door) between 350 - 400 GBP and the condition was excellent.
Current pricing - at the end of the day they are only worth what somebody is prepared to pay for them

Ok, need advice. What kind of diff? She needs some kind of LSD or lockdif. 1.5way maybe...? Manufacturers and/or what your choice would be...?

Ok, my brother is considering to swap rebuilded renesis engine and gearbox to her. Seems like good idea at this point. We have talked and thought about it, alot. Does anyone have heard about using carbs at renesis engine?

And another question: 13b NA engines. If you do porting or heavy porting on it, does old ECU works, at all? And can old ECU be re-mapped?
Title: Finnish race car project
Post by: Steve-A on July 27, 2011, 09:20:38 AM
If you\'ve got an rx8 engine and box, I\'d have thought the best best would be to transplant all the fuel injection gear, loom and ecu from the rx8.

If you do any porting the old ECU wont have the right map in it. I\'m not sure if you can get the old one remapped, but I suggest you\'d be best going for one of the commonly used aftermarket ECUs for their extra features and tune-ability.
Title: Finnish race car project
Post by: Will66 on July 27, 2011, 10:45:14 AM
FB with an RX8 engine would be immense!  The 192 would probably be the easier one to manage since it\'s not got the control system for the auxillary ports to worry about.  Not heard of one running a carb but it should be possible, you\'d need custom manifolds though, as well as a custom exhaust and you\'d need something to control the ignition.
Title: Finnish race car project
Post by: re japi on July 27, 2011, 05:42:54 PM
Problem is that those aftermarket ECU´s are expensive and i dont really know who can tune it here.

Renesis swap should be easy (in theory). Manifolds, exhaust is no problem. And i dont worry about ignition either. We thought alot about transplanting all that electronic crap with the engine, but realized that IT would be difficult. I think that its more simple to do it all oldschool style. No electronics, just basic ignition and massive carbs!

And i heard that in very high revving engines, carbs are easyer to tune. And they will work better in higher revs, compared to ignition. Thats why bikes have carbs
Title: Finnish race car project
Post by: Will66 on July 27, 2011, 06:51:47 PM
I\'m not sure the RX8 has the ability to run a distributor but since it\'s fundamentally not that different from a 12a, if you could make an ignition system for it you should be able to make it run.

Carbs are easier to make run as they don\'t require a high pressure fuel rail and precision control of the fuel feed.  It\'s why they\'re more popular for DIY stuff.  Plenty of high revving bikes run fuel injection.
Title: Finnish race car project
Post by: re japi on July 28, 2011, 04:33:11 AM
Oh, i mean injection, not ignition... :)

Ya, dont know difference, i havent seen Renesis engine so close. But im pretty sure that it can be done DIY.

I have tryed to hunt donor car for few days now. Found few, even if chassis is in very bad condition, they are expencive... :(

Ok, finally some good news from AKK (national federation of motorsports). Rules are now modified so they allowes rotarys, in stock displacement. And we where supriced cause they approved 13b engines also. Limit in national rallycross series is 2050cc and 13b with multiplier 1,7 is much bigger.

In process of fighting against AKK, my friend did get few supporters to rotarys also. :) So, in few years there will be few more rotary powered cars racing in that series. My friends Lada 2107, maybe another Lada, Volvo PV544 and hopefully my brothers FB. :)

Then some bad news. My friend decided that he wont be braking apart his Lada, again.  He just managed to get that thing work. Good setups and so on. He started to build another car, just for that rotary engine.

So Mr.Hayward, im sorry but our little project is onhold now, for a year i think. :( I really wanted so your engine here in next season. But i understand my friend, he wants to build the best possible car for that engine...

Here is only Rotary powered car in our National rallycross seriers. Toyota Starlet with Swedish build 12a PP. Engines displacement has been modified to smaller because of our old rules.

Ok, there is Mazda 1500 -67 in sale near me. I have few questions if someone can answer them:

Mazda was building this car with 1500cc, 1800cc engine and with rotary(Luce). I need to know similaritys of those models? Brakes, suspension, all those and chassis components, are they compatible? Gearbox and rearend, diff? And can i swap components from other older Mazdas, like rx7 or 626?

I was thinking that i would build street sleeper, with 12A engine. But i need to upgrade lots of components, cause our laws to get it street legal.

Thanks

Last sunday i went to Ahvenisto racetrack. (i live quite near it) Big event, Historic Grand Race. Lots of awesome old cars in track and in carpark. Noticed that NSU RO80. It was amazing! Took over 1500 hours to rebuild! And craftmanship was amazing. Talked with owner/builder for some time. It has "semiautomatic" gearbox and 900cc aviation engine. :)

My brother did buy another RX-7, -94 FD3S! :) Quite stock, running original turbos without seqvential and 1bar boost. Just amazing machine!

Im praying that i can test drive it asap! 8) He said (after short test) that engine and mapping seems good. Power comes in low rews, and theres lots of power. :)

But little help needed. Where can i find Apex´i +commander´s manual? He didnt get it, so is it possible to get from internet?

Another question: Car has Tein Super drift coilovers. Does anyone knows difference between them and Race spec coilovers?? I imagine that springs are different, but how about dambers?

I did find that Apexí manual. Trying to learn it. Very interesting piece of electrics... And that FD is awesome! I really dont know what power she has, but tires brakes looses traction every time you try to full accelleration... :)

Interesting next season coming in rallycross. :)

That rotary Starlet is on sale. Engine has 270hp/190nm@10800! :)

And my friend told me that few other rotarys should come too. One rotary is planted to mk2 Escort. Rumored to be a Swedish built engine, with 330hp... :)

FB is almost ready for cutting. And my brother decided that FD rear axle and gearbox will be fitted to FB. Also all the suspension components.

He really wants to use that 13b-rew engine too. Problem is that, that engine has to be NA engine, and we dont know is that possible!? Can we swap rotors to other rotors(like FC´S NA rotors) to make 13b-rew a NA engine???
Title: Finnish race car project
Post by: re japi on January 09, 2012, 04:34:32 AM
Axels are out from FD. Ready to be fitted to FB. We were suprized when we realized that FB and FD have exactly same lenght. (from axle to axle) And widht is almost the same, FD is just about 2 cm wider. :)

And seems like he cant use those Tein coilovers. They are just too short. They only have like 8cm area to move...

Well, not a rotary but... :)
Little project/toy. I have been doing for few months, just for fun.
I got it from friend, for free. Nissan Sunny -94, 1.6L 16v

Found some rust, but overall condition is good.

Interior is gone, lots of weight saving. Im quessing about 80kg. Front door alone, 8kg of.

Car is done 260t km and engine internals still looks like new. :)

Intake and fuel system looks good. I think that i dont have to do anything to it. Just little porting and increase fuel pressure.

Just starting to port the head... :)

My project Nissan is slowly coming together. So much to do, so little time... :)

My brothers project is procressing too. Last weekend he visited at Haywards. He had lots of fun. So many questions, so little time. ;)

Special big thanks to Carl and boys at Haywards! :)

Updates:

Nissan is quite ready. Engine seems good and makes good power. Maybe in a few days i can go to give it a "shakedown". :)

My brothers FB has now Fd`s rear axel. Boot is cutted because it needed more space that we thought. He has build new suspension towers too. Front has custom made (by my bro) axels fitted with Fd´s brakes. Also he purchased custom made (to him) coilovers to front and back. Fd´s steering is ready to be fitted. Rollcage´s main components are orderer and are home waiting to be installed.

Rumours of that car has allready waken some guys. One fella is coming to see that suspension. ;) I have started to hunt some sponsors. Also, saturday we going to go see a bus project, witch is perfect for a motorhome. Previous owner allready started to do that.

I\'ve just checked your forum account permissions and everything is fine, so you should be able to post pics. If it still doesn\'t work, check the image file size isn\'t too large, as the forum will prevent you from posting those.

An alternative - have you got a photobucket (or similar, free) photo-hosting account so you can put links on here to photos you post up there? I hope that makes sense :)

Very nice:) is the rear subframe tied into the roll cage? Also the gear box? That way you don\'t need the crappy ppf from the fd:D;)
Title: Finnish race car project
Post by: re japi on February 07, 2013, 05:18:16 AM
Rear subframe is welded in to cars chassis.
Engine and gearbox have not been fitted yet. They will need custom frames too. Engine and gearbox will move 30cm back, so at this point it´s kind of impossible to say how they will be fitted. When engine arrives, it will be bolted to gearbox and start measuring. And start cutting floor, tunnel and firewall. :)

Just curious, why is that ppf crappy?

And little edit to my posts:
Original rear diff subframe is bolted to another custom made frame, wich is welded to chassis.

And new rule Slicks are Kumho semi-slicks. Before all kind of full slicks were allowed...

Its just better and easier to avoid using it, the pods crack and all sorts. Solid mount the heat box to chassis, also strap the diff up, this is what I would do.

Today we went to visit SRT (Sarlin Race Team). He sells racing equipment and stuff. He used to drive Fia GT kind of series with very very fast and beutiful, custom made Ford Escort Cosworth.

"Thing" just got my attention. Original -01 WRC Focus. Sainz used todrive that thing. Then it was rolled here in Finland few years ago. Now, fully restored.

Then is that Alcon brakes. Aluminium, solid lump. Just work of art! Amazing. Cost, around 6000â,¬! :)

First, I really want to say that people in UK are very polite and they really made us feel like we are welcomed. Thank you for that, we really had good time, where ever we were... :)

Then I want to apologise our bad english. Its really hard when you get exited about some topic, your brains are working but your mouth just goes blaah blaah and no one cant understand anything what you are trying to say... ;)

Our trip to UK were more than a trip to us. You really cant imagine what it ment to us. I did mention to few people that there is just no rotarys and just a few people who really knows about rotarys here in Finland.

Maybe our trip was a step, 10 years of hobby became a lifestyle... ;)

For me, I really want to push even harder, to get all these stubborn Fins to understand what a amazing thing a rotary is. I have done that for a 10 years now, and believe me, Ill keep doing that until I die... :D

For my brother Jukka (aka jynkkis at MRC forum), I think that he really wants push to get his car done and to get to see his FB beast at the track. Your feedback about that car made us both wanting to push harder to get FB running... brab brab brab whaaAAAAMMM! ;)

Thank you to all of you, we really had a epic trip! And we will be back! :)

Toni Niemi with Rotary Starlet is number 1 in autocross!!! He managed to come in 2nd place in final round of championship. He had enough points to win championship! Congrats Toni! Next year hopefully more rotarys will be fighting against MR2...

Btw, in RS10, me, C J R, Steve and some others talked about solid engine mounts. Nylon with heatwrap. Does someone have pictures of them? Need D.I.Y. help... ;)

I can\'t help with the engine mount query, but I did want to congratulate Toni on winning that Autocross championship in a rotary powered car. It\'s great to hear of such successes and to know that people are demonstrating how good the rotary engine can be in competitive events :Thumbs-up

Engine in its place. As you can see, it is really in "deep". ;) Only problem is that there is no room for carb and airfilter... :/
Title: Finnish race car project
Post by: re japi on September 16, 2013, 04:08:42 AM
My brother dropped engine down by 4cm. Now, carb has more space around it.

Its funny, I have seen that engine and gearbox on its place 3 times now. That is just sick. Its so far behind that its got to be illegal ;)

Diff is now in place too. And he did get "custom made PPF".

BTW, Toni´s win in autocross made people to talk and hype about rotaries. Hopefully we can get more rotaries to race in the future. :)

I´m a moron. Just realized that I typed "you", I meant ME! ;)

Then some bad news: My brothers back is maybe "gone". He might get knife to fix that. Well, anyways there is a change that he might need a surgery.

So, because that and other reasons, his Dirtkicker FB wont be finised so soon... :(

Other news in National rallycross:
Car minimum weight is 1000kg now.
Billet stuff in engine are not allowed.
8 valve engines can be 2200cc.
+ lots of rules to make championship cheaper and even to all.

I hate Opels but I have a soft spot for Asconas and Mantas ;)

Our father raced Group A Ascona in late -80 and early -90. It had very good engine at the time, unfortunatly gearboxes did broke easy...

That Green Ascona on the video, it was allready very quick car, allways at the top in that series. They rebuilded it, and it did take over 3 years.

Had more info about that Imsa RX. Someone in Denmark purchased it. They raced it few years and then it was converted to run V8... :(

Also my brother is doing good progress. I will add more pics soon.

We have been discussing about using ECU and fuel injection at some point in future. Does anyone have knowledge and or experience using Haltech on 13B PP N/A engine? Thoughts, opinions or ideas?

246hp. But engine is build for max torque and big rev range. Torgue and power band is very linear and easy to use/drive. And its quite "lowcost" engine, no very expensive parts.

Oh, btw, it is Opel 2.0l 16valve engine. :)
Title: Finnish race car project

I bet that\'s fun to drive!! Is the car sub 1,000kg?
Title: Finnish race car project
Post by: re japi on February 23, 2014, 05:04:13 AM
Car weights 1030kg with driver. So there is 30kg too much weight.

Yes, Janne has done lots and lots work and thinking to get that car behave and run the way he wants. Even though engine is a bit low powered to this series, car is quite compatible because so much effort and time has gone to development and testing cars suspension and handling.

Well, there is not much Lada left in it. :) It has classfibre body, gearbox and rearend is from Volvo, suspension is based on Volvo components.

Testing process has taken 3 years now. Car is quite finished.
Car can do 0-60 meters in 1,6 seks in tarmac, so its good result for less than 250hp.
But I have tryed very hard to get rotary under that bonnet too ;)
Title: Finnish race car project
Post by: Grant Monkhouse on February 23, 2014, 09:31:28 AM
For a non turbo\'d rotary he would only gain 50 hp if he used a PP motor.

Could he use a turbo motor?
Title: Finnish race car project
Post by: re japi on February 23, 2014, 01:02:02 PM
Yes, but rotary doesent weight so much. And he could but rotary further back witch has big effect on weight distribution and balance of car.

Even though that engine is good, rotary would have bigger rev range. Also max torque would be in bigger range.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Basic engine rules in National Autocross series:

-Rear and middle engined cars are allowed max 2050cc

-Frontwheeldrive and rearwheeldrive cars are alloved to have:
-2050cc max if there is variable valve timing system
-2250cc max if there is multi valve head
-2400cc max if there is 2valve/cylinder in head

-Rotary engines multiplier 1,8. Rotary is compared to multi valve engine.
-rear and middle engine max is 2050cc
-front and rear wheel drive is max is 2400cc

Engines must be N/A engined. Must be factory build. Must be car engine. No billet engines  or even heads allowed. Pump gas only(later re85 allowed)

All these rules was suggested and "approved" my drivers for benefit of this series.
It have become "Toyota MR2" series, so everybody wanted to change that.
Title: Finnish race car project
Post by: Grant Monkhouse on February 23, 2014, 04:27:28 PM
How much does the current engine weigh? How much bigger is it than a 13B?

Advantage of the rotary is that you can rev them really high, iv been told 13,000rpm in drag cars, with only side clearencing the rotors. So a bridge port motor would effectively have a power band from 4,000 rpm to 13,000 rpm IF the gear box can shift at those speed. However the power won\'t be made all that way, most likely around the 7,500/8,000 rpm area maybe
Title: Finnish race car project
Post by: re japi on February 23, 2014, 05:35:59 PM
That Opel engine is very small actually, and weights about 100kg with everything on it. But biggest differense is in height. Dunno for sure but I bet that Opel engine is about 10cm "taller".

In this engine, power band range is about 4000-6500 rpm. Janne has other engine too with power band at about 5500-7500rpm. It has good power, but torque band is crap. Both engines has rev limiter at 8250rpm.

So lets say that rotary has limiter at 9000 or 9500 rpm. Usually, compared to piston engine, power and torque curve is still rising. So there is a good area 4000-9000 rpm, witch is much more than piston engine. And those extra revs effects alot in shifting gear. In some curves you dont necessarely shift down or up. Or you could shift and power is there

Bro is slowly doing some progress. Lots to do still. Even though surgery went well, his back is not good yet.

Our dad is working on electrics to car.

Rallycross season starts within 2 weeks! Yesterday I had long talk with Janne (owner of that Lada). Lada is ready to fight and Janne is driving full season. Heard lots of rumours too. Today was first round of national rallycross at Honkajoki racetrack.
Day was perfect. About 28-30 celsius, great cars, lots of fun.

Janne´s Lada was awesome. He was fast and car had no problems. He managed to get to D final and there to C final. Car was performing well, but then something happened. We dont know why and what. Engine is running bad... (Number 22 in pics)

And rumours were true. There is a 13B PP in Volvo PV544! Funny thing is that he is my friends friend. :) I talked with him alot. Car was awesome. 8 years not racing and very different kind of engine that he is used to, was quite big challenge to him. He is a Volvo fan so he is not used to rev engine so high. ;) He had a bit water temperature problems. Unfortunatly at second qualification he hitted rail, and that was it, too much damage to car...
(number 21 in pics, blue car)

Also we talked with Toni Niemi, last years champion with green Toyota Starlet 13B PP. He had no problems. Water temperature was little high but other than that, car was great. They havent done anything to car since last season, not even tested. Although he did entered few ice races in winter. Anyways, he was 3rd, so good start to season...

I will put pictures to photobucket. :)

Second round of national rallycross was in Kouvola 7.6-2014

Toni with Starlet managed to get third place overall. He had lots of traction problems but nothing else

Janne Asikainen with Volvo PV 544 had problems with feeding fuel to engine. They managed to fix that problem, and car started to work. Now engine sound awesome, hitting rev limiter at 9800 rpm and spitting fire from exhaust :Thumbs-up Unfortunatly, he got black flag, because he was "blocking the way too agressive". In braking he got hitted from behind and spinned. He was :censored::censored::censored::censored:ed! Judges were morons...

Janne with Lada... well, everything went bad from friday to saturday. Car has electric problem. And it has secondary engine on it, Janne doesent like it. Lada got lots of battle scars during the day. And all ended to D final, when Lada got hitted bad and spinned out of track.

Anyways, we had awesome time, and everything s**t that happened didnt stopped us to have fun. Here´s Batman and his new sidekicks Boobarella and Legs ;) I will put more pics later...

Little update on last rallycross event. I wasnt able to go there because back back is still hurting...

Well, Janne´s Lada was okay but just didnt manage to get to finals unfortunatly.

Toni´s rotary Starlet was working well too, but he just wasnt fast enough, so no bodium place this time.

Rotary Volvo wanst racing because they found little crack on engine. Dunno what happens now, they are sorting that problem...

Also in Super cars, heat was on. One of the biggest crasches in our series:

Well, next weekend is final event of our rallycross series! Cant wait

Rotary Volvo is ok now, and ready to fight. She had scratches inside rotor housings. :( Guy tested it few weeks ago and said that she has massive power :P I really hope that car is working good at seasons last event...

Janne´s Lada is fixed too. Janne said that now he is going flat out and gives no mercy! I wonder what kind of battle scars he manages to do now...

Rotary Starlet had engine problems at last event. They opened it and found that side seals were gone but apex were okay...?  But I dont know hows that possible? Overheated? My brother talked with Toni today, he was testing at Hyvinkää. Toni said that little bugger has more power now that ever! So, we are expecting Toni to go FAST! ;)

Well, yesterday did not go as we planned. Lada was making weird noices and caught on fire. Those minor problems were sorted and then... car was destroyed. Janne rolled car over. But Janne is okay...

Toni with Starlet is doing well. He said that it is awesome to drive when you have massive power :)

Volvo PV with 13B pp isnt working! They wont race it now. It doesent rev smoothly after 6000rpm, it just farts and goughs. Also he noticed that exhaust temperatures wont rise, 1st rotor 700 celsius and 2nd only 500... All components have been changed, fuel system, ignition and so on. They have tested and checked everything like 3 times. Also engine has been rebuild about a month ago. What could be wrong????

I will put some pictures later

Janne´s Lada. Actually its not too bad. And seems like that all expensive parts and components are ok. And safety devises worked!!!!

1st pic: Volvo has 5 dudes working on it :)
2nd pic: And here she is, Autocross champion 2014. I´m very happy for Vesa, he really deserved that title!!

At final Toni´s Starlet´s gearbox destroyed. He was super fast before that. And he was disapointed, he really wanted to fight. He was 4th in series.

Well, that was certainly eventful! Sorry to hear of the rotarys having major issues though - but as long as no-one hurt, everything can be fixed :)

No major updates. :/

Bro´s car still needs wirings, windows and some other stuff. And he started to do front suspension all over again.

Janne´s Lada is slowly coming back together. Even though hit was quite big, majority of expensive parts was not harmed. Few days ago we changed a roof to car. Yesterday we did put in a new engine. Well, actually its just mode of new engine. Janne desided to change Opel engine to a "bigblock" Volvo engine. Also, he is making changes to rearend too.

Dont know what Toni is done with his rotary Starlet, but there is some rumours that its for sale :(

Last thing I have heard about that rotary Volvo PV, is that its running again. Every problem that it had, it was because of ECU. It was crap. So I´m happy that they managed to solve those problems :)

And here is some FB brab brab video I found, B group action! :)

Rallycross season 2015 start in week and a half. Cant wait!

Janne´s Lada is NOT ready. This picture was taken last weekend :) Still have to go to dyno and test. And I think test has to be done in free practice at first race... :)

Rotary Starlet has a new owner. That guy is good, and I am really looking forward to see what he can do. Here is link to his Facebook page. Please go and like and support him:
https://www.facebook.com/rxtonikuhanen?fref=ts

Also, I have talked with Janne, who owns that Rotary Volvo PV. Problems should be sorted now and car has massive power. They are doing few modifications to front end, but other than that, car is ready to race. I really hope that Janne and Volvo will have good season this year.

And Finnish rotary fans and enthusiast have own little page in Facebook. Please take a look and like. ;)

Yes, Janne has nice, good garage. He does car services for living. Easy to work when stuff are professional...

Well, he had car at dyno few days ago. After warm up, got ignition good to go. Then they felt vibration. Then massive explosion :P
New lighter drive shaft didnt like Volvo power. ;)

Yesterday we looked at damages. Gearbox out shaft took a hit. Luckily Janne has spare parts and he started to rebuild gearbox with a guru.

Still have lots to do. Dyno, test and some stuff to car. No hurry, in friday we should be racing :D

Excantly. Those things are not jokes. Janne said that he was lucky that he remembered to put drive shafts "blast shields" to the shaft/gear box tunnel. Actually, that shield broke in impact. And exhaust got a massive hit. Also there is lots of impact marks in tunnel...

Janne said also that when shaft exploded, everyone within 100m radius had little bit poop in their pants ;)

Well, last saturday we had first round of our rallycross series. I really like Kouvola´s Tykkimäki circuit. Had fun again. :) This series is really growing, lots of new drivers and cars. We have 40 racers in this series now!

Janne´s Lada was going great, nothing broke. Janne didnt trust the car, because he didnt do any testing. Car was only driven on dyno and to trailer. And first two test runs in race, he had no front brakes. :P But during race day, he got more confidence to car so his time improved. Unfortunatly, he didnt get to finals, position 20th. "Big block" Volvo engine is awesome. He has more power and torgue than his previous Opel engine, even though engine didnt rev and didnt make power above 7000rpm. So he is missing some horses. But time to do some testing, next round is in three weeks...

Another Janne´s Volvo Pv with rotary was doing great too. They didnt have last years problems, and car performed well. Driver was smiling :) Last years hard work is paying off now. Unfortunatly, he wasnt fast enough this time, so he was 21st.

This picture is from friday night, getting ready. Weird thing is that people just low this car. We really dont know why :) But its well made and looks quite good, so maybe thats why...
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b588/japi_laukkanen/Japi/Lada_zpsbf6nybna.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/japi_laukkanen/media/Japi/Lada_zpsbf6nybna.jpg.html)

Picture is from saturdays morning practice. I think Janne was nervous..
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b588/japi_laukkanen/Japi/Lada%201_zpswq2ygn8o.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/japi_laukkanen/media/Japi/Lada%201_zpswq2ygn8o.jpg.html)

Top 3 in autocross. Winner, Vesa was last years champion with his awesome Fiat X1/9. He really deserved than win. Last week he had about 10 hours sleep. He broke his engine less that week ago :D

3rd was Toni Kuhanen, with Rotary Starlet. Previous owner Toni Niemi sold his 2013 winner car(green) and now its is in Toni K´s hands. Toni is also really really good driver, and this was his first rallycross even. Really looking forward to see his driving..

2nd was some 16 year old dude!!!! He was really fast, really impressive! Looking forward to see how far he can go...

Finally bro and dad have made some progress with car. Hopefully, it will be ready after our summer vacations. :)

Also, second rallycross event was in last weekend. Series really is growing, over 40 cars in our class, about 20 cars in SRC class and over 15 super cars. Lots of new faces too. Circuit had new tarmac in start so that made some problems, cars were not launching because it was so slippery. We managed to get only one decent launch... :/

Janne´s Lada were good, no problems. Just wasnt fast enough this time, position 19 so we were 5points short to get to finals. Now engine gets upgrade backage, so hopefully Janne gets that +1500rpms, 20 horses and 30nm what he is missing now. Chassis and suspension is working just great. I just love being in Janne´s crew, we dont have to work with car because car is always in good condition. There is some teams that has to work in middle of night and between every heat... :)

Rotary Volvo was good too, no problems. Car sounds and looks amazing! Unfortunatly in 4th heat, first turn had 3 cars side by side. Volvo got hitted, so he spinned out... :/ But thats racing...

Rotary Starlet was flying also. But in C finals, because of that new tarmac, car just dindt launch so that was it. Impossible to fight from last position...

Clip from Autocross final https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhDMKPbA0ao

In-car action from MR2 in Autocross final https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Qn_wZ1biS8

We have In-car camera in Lada, so hopefully we can put those vids here too someday :)

3rd rallycross event was last weekend. Well, what can I say about it...

Everything was shit. No bathrooms, no electricity, nothing was good (or even decent) basically. Me and bro had to bring electricity to our side of pits because it wasnt done when we got there. Track is crap, really stupid layout, really bad condition...

Lada had problems before this event so engine builder Seppo Kallonen really had to work with it. 3 dyno session, removed Haltech and back to old dizzy. But now engine is awesome. Massive torgue from low revs. Power really jumps up at 4000rpm. Max is about 250hp and 290nm. Lines crosses at 7000 and limiter is at 9000rpm. ;) Also made some upgaredes to suspension. Unfortunatly, we werent fast enough this time, position 24 so no finals. Next picture sums our weekend basically...

(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b588/japi_laukkanen/Japi/jep%20jep_zps9veq1kdo.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/japi_laukkanen/media/Japi/jep%20jep_zps9veq1kdo.jpg.html)

Then that track. After 3 autocross start, 5 cars were destroyed or badly beaten! It was dangerous. Drives say that we wont race. After long discussion, they were forced to make "adjustments" to track. But track surface was allready gone and it was obvious that cars will be getting beaten in that track...

This Escort was rebuilded for this season. It was beautiful. Driver is ok though....
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b588/japi_laukkanen/Japi/auts_zpsmijicjd4.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/japi_laukkanen/media/Japi/auts_zpsmijicjd4.jpg.html)

(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b588/japi_laukkanen/Japi/auts1_zps3shkyt6k.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/japi_laukkanen/media/Japi/auts1_zps3shkyt6k.jpg.html)

Well, rotary Volvo was flying. He managed to get to the finals. But before that, oil sump was beaten and bent oil pick up. So he loosed oil pressure and forced to retire. So that was tracks fault too...

Rotary Starlet was flying also. He had no problems. But in C finals, he rear ended someone so that was it...

And that was that even... We are not going back there, ever... :/

Yes, I usually use word crap but this time event deserced word shit. I have seen races, rallyes and crosses 37 years now, and I have never seen this kind of chaos and crap anywhere...

Well, good thing is that our car is ok. Just minor battle scars. And I had long talk with our driver yesterday. All is forgotten (almost), and its time to move on. We know that car is fast and really relieble now. We just have to push driver to same level. Next event is in Honkajoki and we love that track. Ready to fight!

Yes, that bodykit is one of the best looking I have ever seen. Just brilliant that bro was able to use those molds. Possibility is that we will make those kits for sale too...  ::) Anyone interested...? ;)

Also, he has made all classfibre hood and nose peace. Just have to find groub B rear wing..

One thing that surprised us is that how much that door weights! It has nothing in side, aluminium inside panel and polycarbonate class. Still very heavy...

At this point I have to say that I´m really proud of my brother! He has done amazing job. With unusual car, using weird components and have done thinks to car that has never been done before basically! And without help. It has been long road... I really wish that you guys and gals some day can see that fatarse FB live!  :singing: Cheers!

looking smart....front does look a bit low especially for rallycross....maybe a detachable lower skirt that if hits a rock or bottoms out does not rip front bump off.....maybe summit flexible like rally mudgaurd material so its got strength and give also. what colour is it going.....787b colour scheme would be epic!  ;D
Title: Re: Finnish race car project
Post by: re japi on July 29, 2015, 03:47:53 PM
We might have to cut that front bumper half, just under those air intake holes.

All those panels are made only one sheet of classfibre. One sheet is flexible and can take lots of hits and bending. However, when it brakes, it really brakes. Bro has front panels (wings) too which have two sheets of classfibre. But dont know if he is using them...

Rear of the car is allready painted. Its quite basic red. All those class fibre panels were painted too, but paint boiled off. Now they look that they are only primer painted. These red is quite near to original color and its easy to repaint...

Yeah, 787 color would be awesome. :) At first we thought group B colors...

Also, radiator is going to front. Front hasnt got room for FD´s rad, so he is using FB`s stock radiator at the moment. Unfortunatly, there is no room for oil cooler anymore, so he might have run it without it. Dunno if that a good idea though. Thoughts?

And he started to make front suspension system, again... :)

how long is a race... do fb's come with oil cooler as stock and part of overall cooling system ? if yes  then think it needs to go in....even if behind rad!or somewhere with some air flow.

Yes, Janne with his Lada and Tommi with his Sumbeam Imp has given us lots of info and tricks how to do classfibre. Its not that difficult, its all about prework. You have to have good components (stuff) and good molds.

Btw, this waiting is killing me!!! :c002: I really want to see that fatass brabbing and running. Still needs propshaft shortened, front suspension, and clutch from Carl. That about it...

Didnt see this post. :)

Well, race is 3 laps at heats and 6 at finals. Lap is about mile, depends on track. So, just few miles basically...

Fb´s has oil cooler at stock but bro`s engine is based on FD´s or FC´s (or something like that, ask Carl ;) and I think they need that cooler as overall cooling system. Rad is on front now. Cooler used to be in front too...

Ok, our RallyCross seasons last event was in last weekend. I wasnt there, I was sick. I really cant tell you how much that pissed me off cause I couldnt go. Really was waiting that event... :/

Anyhoo, Janne´s Lada was doing great. But wasnt fast enough to get to finals. This season wasnt so great for Janne. Some speed is missing, dunno if its car or man. We have to look thru all data we have.

Also Rotary Volvo was going fast but some misfortune at last heat, and he didnt get to finals either. Some bad luck in every race, so his position in leaderboard isnt good either. But car is running good now :)

Rotary Starlet was fast. But his fight ended to B Final. He was 8th overall at that race. And 6th in season leaderboard.

Last years champion, Vesa with his Fiat X1/9 managed to get that crown back again. He was super fast thru season. But he didnt get it cheap. One young dude, I think he is 17 now, was 2nd overall. Not so far behind Vesa in points. And he is SUPER FAST allready. :)

But our friend Tuomas with his MK2 Ford Escort was really getting better thru season. Unfurtunatly, he has have some bad luck in every event. At last event he was REALLY REALLY fast. He clocked second fastest lap time 0.39.1min and was hitting mid and high 0.39min in every lap. Funny thing about those times are that they are really compatible at higher class, SRC. :D Unfortunatly, at B final, his wishbone broke, and he didnt manage to A final... :/

I know you British love your Escorts, so here is in-car video how stupid Escorts should be driven ;)
https://www.facebook.com/116958901757124/videos/804745199645154/

Oh, and SuperCar champion is Niclas Grönholm. I bet you know who he is...? :)

Overall feelings about this season are positive. Some really good fights and racing. New cars and drivers. New friends and new info and knowlidge. Really looking forward next season :)

Yesterday we tested Janne´s Lada, alot :) Thru all season, problems were getting of the line, launches... It was too stiff, so coilovers were rebuilt after last event. Finally we did get some desent setup to back coilovers and links. Now it does 0-60kmh 2,1seks and 0-100kmh 5,1seks on semislicks. Last years was 0-60 1,8 and 0-100 4,8 with slicks...

Now its time to figure out front setup. Front coilovers needs to be rebuilded too. They are very stiff...

Car was very good, clocking good times. But finally, after all season beating, something finally broke. One spark plug :D

Just an observation...the coilover units are upside down? Is there a reason for this?. Also you only have 1 locking collar on the spring....needs loads of preload to keep them secure....worth fitting a 2nd....cost me dearly.
Title: Re: Finnish race car project
Post by: re japi on November 29, 2015, 04:09:57 PM
Reason for coilover is upside down is quite simple actually: less weight to that coilover to handle...
Im not sure if I can explain it but, when coilover is in normal position it has to handle its own weight too. When it is upside down, it has to handle only weight of that narrow shaft. When there is minimum amount of weight for that coilover to handle, it reacts and moves faster. Thats why many use motorbike brakes, they weight nothing. And thats why wishbones and all that crap is custom made from little pipe metal. :)

Lets say normal FB or FD suspension setup with brakes, wheels and so on weight 25-30kilos(no idea what they weight), with custom setup you can drop it some where 10-15kg maybe. So, if suspension can react and move faster, all that useless weight is turned to our advantage... :)
In bro´s car brake components are still FD parts, at this point. He will change them if this setup works...

It has only one locking collar cause it doesent need another. It has quite big preload. Its snow mobiles, so its suppose to work that way, I quess :) But dunno if he is going to get little preload spring to it...

Ok that explains it. Reducing unsprung weight...i no nothing about rally cross. Suspension did remind me off a tamiya grass hopper i had as a kid. Built for punishment.

Yes exactly. I tryed to say unsprung weight but didnt know how :D

Actuall, same principles are in track racing. For example "little formulas". Do you know monocoilover suspension system what they use in front ? Same idea basically. :) There is many different variatios but purpose is the same

Ive been reading up on suspension...minefield.
Mono coilover.....is that inboard shocks?
Title: Re: Finnish race car project
Post by: re japi on November 30, 2015, 06:09:23 AM
Yes, suspension things makes brain hurt. :/

We have been very lucky that Janne (lada owner) and few others have helped us. For example angle and position of four links where they mounts to rear axle, makes a LOT differense... Little a bit in wrong position, car wont jump of the line... (And angle of propshaft too ;) but its another story)

Yes it is. Mono coilover is really weird looking thing. I cant even want to try explain it, my english isnt good enough :) But its really old system, I think its from 70s... If you google something like F2000 or Formula Renault, they should have similar system...

Wow, the Mono shock thing is a little confusing.

With Mono meaning single, the only logic I can make, is that years ago springs and shocks were two separate units so I presume mono just means both the shock and the spring become one Mono unit.

The racing car thing poked my memory as their has been a  single seater formula for years and years called Mono Posto , which translates to single-seat

p.s the upside down shock makes sense reducing unsprung weight, because if the mass weight of the suspension system is reduced the shock responds better as its controlling reduced weight.

Yes its quite weird unit. :) But it really has only ONE coilover and basically two shafts from both sides pushing it. Of course there is many versions, but idea is the same. Believe me, I dont understand how that works and I have been studying it a bit :D That unit what kind of converts shock from shaft to torgue to shock to coilover is really confusing...

Same pricipals and idea can use in any terrain, doesent matter what you race. Thats´s the coal if you really want your suspension and tires to work in their full potential...

What we have learned with Janne´s Lada is that even if some guru says something, it doesent mean that its going to work on your car necessarely. We have data and drivers gut feeling to prove it. And you have to understand that Lada has 3rd evo version suspension on front and I think that 6th on back. And he is going to modify it again... It has been a LONG road to get that suspension to work...

With current rear on Westory, I wouldnt change anything. Maybe just link positions on chassis and axle. If you change different rear to it, then its different thing, I would go with fully independent, just because cambers, casters, toes and so on. Then again, I dont know crap about Westfields... :D

Easyest way might be to do what bro did. Swap FD´s or 8´s all rear with subframe and bolt it to Westies subframe...

Hi Jon. coilover is upside down just cos it wont fit in otherway. You are right about locking collar. I havent have time yet to hunt couple of them more. Allso i do need stronger springs so extra locking is important. Those one are for 25-35kg springs and i need 45-55kg springs. And for unsprung weight... she will have motorcycle brakecalipers and custom made lightweight plates( in 2058) it saves 20-25kg off from 1 axel. Some sayd that 1kg on tyre = 7kg on chassi. Those brakes are commonly used on finnish rallycross, and they do work well.  heat is short and speeds are under 100miles/h so they wont suffer so much on hard brakings. I just have to learn not to lay on brakepedal with my left foot.

Wow Iv missed a few posts on here!! Car is looking amazing.

Still got a couple of pages to read. Did you sort the oil cooler positioning? If not why can't you put it inside the cabin? Best place for it IMO as it won't get damaged and take out your oil system/engine and it will be on. The car for cooking

Only drag cars can really run without oil cooling because they just don't run long enough to warm up the oil to working temp to then be cooked
Title: Re: Finnish race car project
Post by: re japi on December 09, 2015, 06:25:43 AM
Not sure about oil cooling. I think bro is using single FD cooler, but its not sure about position yet... Inside cabin is not allowed.

Also he desided to use FB´s little radiator in front. He custom made brakets for two little electric fans...

Us, Janne the Lada driver and Seppo the Volvo engine guru have been talking about benefits and disadvantages using front mounted radiator or rear mounted. We came to conclusion that it would be easyest and most efficcient to use in front... Janne and Seppo change there setup to front too..

Besides, bros FB has so much room in front that it is really easy to make air flow to direction he wants...

Contact me direct and we can either sort out an Exedy Stage 2 paddle clutch with a Racing Beat flywheel, or one of our new range of ATS Carbon clutches which come with the flywheel  as an assembly.

BTW You really really need to run two oil coolers as I am sure you now know Rotarys rely on oil cooling soooooo much more than any piston engine.

Ok, thanks. :) He has to figure out what he wants. Dunno about flywheel but I think he wants carbon clutch...

Yes, I know. I would get one big cooler or use those FD twins. But bro is stubborn :)
Title: Re: Finnish race car project
Post by: Grant Monkhouse on December 09, 2015, 12:33:18 PM
In my opinion if your going to use a carbon clutch you need a twin disc at least or even a triple as they take a while to get warm to stick properly. I burnt out a carbon single plate on the standard twin turbos in about a month of having it expensive lesson learnt.

Also if your racing why don't you look into something like Clive uses in his rx8, a tilton?? Very small and light weight. Better engine acceleration.

Defo need the 2 small oil coolers or one larger one
Title: Re: Finnish race car project
Post by: Grant Monkhouse on December 09, 2015, 12:59:04 PM
Here's another thought for you...

Although the pod your brother has made looks indestructible, he could have just not bothered with it. He has a roll cage in the car?? He could have just mounted the gear box too this and also the differential to the roll cage, Iv seen a picture a few years back of dragon performances track car that had done this. The rear subframe attached straight too the roll cage, instead of the body which is a lot more flexible than the roll cage. That was on an FD. He also got rid of the pod and attached the gear box too the cage
Title: Re: Finnish race car project
Post by: re japi on December 09, 2015, 01:21:48 PM
Well Grant, as I said, I really dont know what he want for his clutch. All I know that he wants carbon one and maybe lighter flywheel. He needs to contact Carl and talk about that... But the question now is what kind of system. Cause he want to use 8´s box too and it has different kind clutch system...

Pod?

As for rollcage thing, its better that bro answers to you :)
In early stage of building that car, it was obvious that he is going to use ppf. What kind of system was still open. I think we talked something about bolting everything to rollcage at one point...
But basically rear subframe and coilover towers are custom made and are attached to roll cage...
Title: Re: Finnish race car project
Post by: jynkkis on December 09, 2015, 02:51:46 PM
Hi All. I will monitor intense oil temp at practice heats, and if it rises too high, i'll assemble one of the fds cooler. Its not that hard to put it right away but I am an idiot and I want to keep weight low, even with a risk.

Subframe is welded to chassy and to roll cage, no usefull pics of it. sorry.

Mazda uses the ppf for some reason, and I have seen a chart that shows it's improving an acceleration by twisting the powerline upwards, much like 4link's  lower links on solid rear axel does to the body.
Don´t know if its a fact but I want to test it as I am only one with FlyLowMotorsports Sirocco who use IRS(RWD). They have 12 cm prop shaft. Gearbox is quite far back, as you can imagine. Talking about weight balance....

Carl told me couple years ago, that carbon clutch do slip a bit on could, but I didn't realize it would burn that easily. I just thought that it's good quality at starts if it slips a second. Back in the 80's some build a small shock absorber on clutch pedall to slip it a bit.
Carbon clutch is not compulsory, but its what Carl recommend, and our engine deal includes a flywheel and clutch.
I think he has forget a hole thing and I haven't call him lately(1,5 years). Both do suffer for lack of time.

It has been great to see that our MANKELI threat here has gain so much attention, feedback, opinions and advice for us. We do appreciate it.

Not to be confused with any carbon clutches on the market before, indeed Exedy has dropped its Carbon range.

About the shifting.... I have to learn to shift very carefully cos that "throughshaft" is still heavy and it is very accurate to shitf 2-3. When I have it made out of lighter material, it doesent need so much force and carefullnes to make that movement from left (1,2) to centergears(3,4).  Full acceleration, 2nd gear @9000 rpm, trying to hit 3rd and miss it to 1st. I think the engine may say brab from very high.

I have new springs now at front 250lbs, but i think they should be even stiffer... 275lbs?? Well see after first test. It is hard to estimate right spring because of the shock angle and corner weight is stil just a hunch. Shocks should be shimmed a bit quicker at slowspeedside.

Here is pic of propshaft, original leight and not-that-long-shaft. A big thanks to Janne (lada rallycrosscar driver) and his colleg to shorten my shaft...  who else has a foot too long shaft??

Another pic is from the office, where we can find a  new oil temperature indicator which is so sexy coloured, it actually gives 3 hp more power.  Colour havent yet effect to fanmail pile.

Parts still missing: rearspoiler (comes in next week), oil pressure light sensor(06.05),  new rearendgear 5.125 (next winter) , motorcycle brakes(next winter) and clutch and flywheel.

First try 1040kg dry weight, about 46/54. What was surprise is that we thought that its about 1100kg and more weight in back...

Second try after four hours of work was with more even corners weights. Bro made lots of work to get them even and more weight to rear.

Keep in mind that class minimum weight is 1060kg...

Dry weight was 1004,5 kg with huge differens between corners FR/FL 43 kg. After six hour: 1061 kg with 55.5 kg extraweight and corners is looking bit better. FR/FL 9.5 kg
I will post scale sheets and some photos when im done with it.

First picture is starting point. I remembered incorrect front weights, but youl get the point. Its horrible un balanced.
Second picture is from the office, where you can see the weigts i used to demostrate drivers and missing flywheel weights.
3. Pic. I needed to use imagination to have 55.5 kgs extra to balance the awfull front and to get her to right battleweight. Orange case is 13 kg of petrol...
4. Pic. Is without "petrol" with 4 kg washerfluid.
5. Pic. With petrol. Mind how front balance slides from right to left depending petrol case. It means, when she has 6.5 kg petrol, shes front balanced and rear is in 1 kg differense. Rear balance doesnt have to be so accurate but front should be should in 10 kg differense in all times.
I cant wait to have those motorcycle brakes, its 36 kgs off, and ill have more extra weight to back. 55.5 + 36 kgs heheheh looking good.
At this point i am pleased even it took almost 10 hours job to balance her this close to perfect. Very pleased.
Next huge job is to get ridof those weights on drivers seat....

Using corner weight scales sure helps. I bet there's a fair few people that build a race car and never even bother to balance their car, I probably wouldn't, but I would do now Iv seen what you can do with it!!

I weigh 96kg so imagine how much my weight would throw out the balance of the car!

:D :) Grant, you are almoust on grown-up weight... if i have to loose weight, it needs more surgical operations. I could waste nails, 1 lung, 1 kidney, half liver and both testies...😊

Specially on gravel, loose traction, balance is important. If front isnt correct it easilly locks up the lighter side, on hard braking. Surely its same situation on wet tarmac.

Bro allready drilled holes to vipers :) I think weight saving was something like 200g. One dude cutted all his bolts which were too long, on finished car. Weigh loss was about 2kg... :)

Also, keep in mind that extra weight isnt bad, if it is in correct place :)

On thing really confuses me is that car is still abit nose heavy. I quess that frame is so heavy...

But as shown in this case, FB can be very light, if you really want to lose some weight of it :D

Yes, balance is everything. Actually funny thing is how weight kind of shift from corner to another corner everything what you do affects on opposite side of car. We learner that watching Janne balancing his Lada.

One our friend is almost 2m long and weights about 120kg. Volvo PVs cabin is basically full of that dude :)

Wiper arm drilling saved 127g and took over 3 hours. Now i wonder will it last or not... not the right place to save weight, but all is counted. Front  inner arces is one place we can make lighter, but im not sure yet will it effect too much to chassisrigidity. Need some planning more.
After new brakes the balance would be 62/38 (632+36)÷1078×100. That would be awesome if the car is still driveable. Now balance is 58/42.

If you have an FD flywheel and clutch center plate you can use those with an FC or RX-8 pressure plate and release bearing, then use the RX-8 starter and your there.

Little updates from our rallycross series...
So our friend Vesa won, third time in a row, with his Fiat 1/9. And he retired and sold the car...
Toni with his rotary Starlet was 5th, he was really good and consistent thru year...
Janne with his rotary Volvo PV was 18th. Basically last event gave him two points and he did pass our Janne in overall points..
So our Janne with Lada was 19th. Even though that position is not what we were after this year, we have to be happy. More than 43 racers in really really tough series, so 19th is ok result...

After season, a week ago, Janne gave us opportunity to test his Lada at Hyvinkää track. That was wrickin´ fun!  ;D I have never driven his car, except moving few meters at pits. And track is unfamiliar to me, only driven few times in street car around it. Conditions were slippery, VERY! ;)

Car is actually really easy to drive. Chassis and suspension works really well, and car isnt as stiff as I thought. Fast steering was a little tricky. Didnt trust brakes at all, with bike brakes, I didnt believe it could stop. Front grip was quite good even in those conditions, no understeer at all. Makes me think that how much front would grip in warmer tyres and tarmac. Rear tyres brakes traction quite easily, because power and cold weather. But even when rear starts to slide, it isnt bad, and you can adapt fast, very neutral, locigal and smooth. Car actually dont like to be in massive slide. Overall rear acceleration grip is good. At any point there wasnt a feeling that Lada would tell me "you made a mistake, you die now" ;) Then that 4 speed dogbox, what can I say, I love it. :P And that engine, good damn its awesome! I was waiting power peak at 4000rpm, but no, power is there immidiately and there is a LOTS of that! There is so much torque that you can drive with higher gear and there where no need to rev it high. I think I didnt went even near rev limiter

For fun, I just watched my lap times. First round I made about 1:10-1:12, and second round about 1:08. I think I could do 1:02 with few more laps easily. Ofcourse its not near what that car can do. I think Janne best is 0:56:5 at the moment...

So here is a vid, enjoy, even its a bad one :)

I was really really cautious, we knew that track, especially tarmac was almost like it was rained. And one person before me spinned at tarmac ;)

Forgot to say that testing that Lada I probably used 70-80% of my skills and maybe 40-50% what that car can do  :P But I´m not a competition driver...

This year we had drag racing dude helping us with that cars rear setup. We gained lots of "inside" knowlidge how links and stuff works. I have learned alot within a year. And car has improved alot. We can do so aggressive setup to rear links that car is actually faster off the line than rear and mid engined cars! 2,7secs 0-30meters and about 4,5secs 0-100kmh. We did it at 4th round in Oulu and every one was like wtf you have done with that car :) Unfortunately, as you can imagine, drivebility isnt that good then. Now setup is quite neutral and car behaves nice, and rear traction is good. Funny thing is that car doesent understeer under throttle but doesent like to go sideways either...

At the moment car is needs abit more power according to our engine builder), but he promised 20 more horses and maybe 20-30 more torque. Engine is just amazing, no problems at all! In this season, only thing that has failed in races was one spark plug :D

Btw Clive, you should come to see that car live ;) I bet that You guys would love to see our rallycross series action. Even though some cars looks like shit, competition is really amazing and though. I really do believe that our rallycross cars might be the best in the world and drivers are just nutcases... :)

Does that waterline to als Look ok?
Dont mind the lower Line leight. Its Just for image.
I dont know why Carl have blocked original lineport, but there Is no other place to put that tank. Does it work that way?

Whats FDs oilcapacity?
What fuelpressure would be correct to carbs?  I think Carl did say about 4,6 psi. Does it sound ok?

I am about to start the beast tomorrow for the first time. She leaks drops of oil here and there, but mainly all oil stays in and that Is the mainthing at this point.
It have took a few years to have her this far and I am restless to take her to icetrack this winther, allthougt  she needs some running in before redlining...

dont know about carb fuel pressure.

whar we looking at with coolant filler?

I was trying to ad a "pressure tank" or "reserve tank". Dont know the correct word in English. Dont know would that work that way and there are no originall port for some reason.

The cap on the cooling tower is that a sprung cap to hold pressure and vent the excess?

Ill expand i would think the cap on the cooling tower to not be sprung and the seperate tank to have a sprung tank...then filled to max...so you would need another  un pressured tank to allow for push out when hot and drawing back in when cooling....if the cooling tower has a sprung cap then the external tank is being used as an expansion tank and does not need the sprung cap that i see fitted?
So if i see right and assume the cooling tower just has a unsprung cap then you need another tank to allow for expansion.....hope that makes sense. If you need a seperate tank the 1 in your fd wing will do.

Firing up for first time id squirt loads of oil into sparky holes and crank short burst to build confirmed oil pressure before firing. This wil also check for any oil leaks on any lines before the beast fires up and squirts it everywhere and prime the coolers etc so you can get a decent level in the sump....in addition i would not rev it for at least 10 mins let them bearings have a easy time.
Woo hoo we want a runnning vid !

I use an over flow tank like this and you will find you need to only fill the tank half way to allow for expansion.

If you fill the tank fully it will just push out the water out it does not need, trouble is it will then push out too much water.

If you can draw or show us the full engine bay with the whole radiator/ water system showing.

Thats the idea  and i hope it goes like that.
Bottom port from tank should go to lower waterline?

I change caps so now expansion tank has the sprungcap. I am a bit unsecure about it.

Enginebay looks litel embarassed now...

OK now I see you have an upright radiator all you need is to plumb the system the same as the RX-4

Fit a blank unsprung cap on the radiator then run the outlet pipe from the radiator neck to the over flow tank.

Fill this only half way and put the pressure cap on the overflow tank.

You should have a pipe on top of the rear iron, when filling , let this vent and then reconnect when you see no more air coming out.

If you look at the image below you will see this is how the RX-4 was plumbed as standard.

Hope this helps.

That rear iron venting was a good tip. Thanks Clive.
Pic did help and I think I can put it rightway now.
What about the plastic port at side of rear iron, below oilfilter neck? It goes to radiators lower tube?

Your right, this one doesnt have it.

I need to find unsprung cap to radiator and that should do the trick.

No Jon, havent got time yet to start it. I had last sunday some spare time.  me and kids went to icetrack wherefrom japi posted some photos to fb. Was awesome day to drive with the gang. Had the opportunity to talk with Minna Sillankorva, woman who drove the group-B FB back in tbe 80s. Her daughter, Suvi was driving first time their e36 with rally spikewheels. She is talented driver, i have to say. I sat a few laps at codrivers seat. Only a couple of time she pumped throttle unnessesarly on cornering.

No rotarys this time at the track. Shit.
I think this winther goes by and my car just stays on stands.

Yes, we had epic weekend at frozen lake. Saturday evening my friend sorted Opels electric problems. So sunday I was able to race Opel after a long time. Had lots of fun! Also bro, my co-worker Jasmine and Janne the rallycrossdriver beated the shit out off that car

Today I went to drive few laps just for fun. Trying to figure out some driving lines and checking curve speeds with gps and RaceChrono App

Took some in-car vid too. There was some loose snow on track so didnt have best traction. Made a new camera mount so it wont flip upsidedown so much. Peace of crap camera! Funny that in this video it seems that Im going really slow even though I was trying to push quite hard, maybe 90% speed

Back to cars ;)
After last session bro and dad said that engine mount is broken. We brought car back home, well to my fatherinlaws house, and started to do some quick fix. Mount and engine was hold by kind of lower strutbar, without that damages would have been bigger. Fixed exhaust, cause it was torn apart too. Repaired the heater and vipers. Fixed air intakes/maf mountings. Swapped tyres. And some little things...

Oh, and last Friday we had quests from Ireland in our lake track. :)

Minna, who bro mentioned earlier asked me Thursday if they can come and drive with them. I said yes, and after work I did go straight to lake and started to fix and plow the track. Minna has "driver academy" and they wanted to show what is having fun in Finland at winter :)

I think that other Irishman pooped his pants when sitting with Minna's go-driver. Minna is one of the best female drivers in the world, you know. :) Anyways, they really had fun and its the main thing...

And I loved their accent ;)

Well, 3 days of ice racing...

Saturday we raced with friends. Also we had French visitors. They wouldn't understand how we can race on lake :D but they had fun, really enjoyed... Sunday was local village winter event so we had lots of co-drivers. Four cars had volunteers to ride as co-driver. Childs and adults had fun, they saw how fun ice racing is... Yesterday I went to teach two of my friends kids how to drive and race. They are 10 and 12 years old... :)

Well, my car performed well, took massive beating in three days. Nothing broke, I think. :) My back and arms are a bit sore. But I'm very happy :D

Exactly! :D

Well, about 15cm so called "steel ice" is enough for a car. About 30cm more than enough... at the moment that lake has about 50-60cm of ice. We simply drill some holes to see if ice is good and strong enough...

Last sunday i asked japi to come by, but he was watching f1s and having pizza ( aka massive hangover) thats why there are no vids yet. Sorry mates.

I think she fires a bit late and engine gets too hot. What would be the correct timing just to get her on the move?
We'll tune her on a dyno later, after running in the engine.

carbs leaks after turning off, even after i opened needle valve a couple times. I have to stop a petrolpumb earlyer than the engine. It helps and maybe the valve starts to function better after a while.

2 nd rotor gives fog through garb barrel after turning off. Is it just cos it gets so hot or could there be some extra lubrication left to burn.

She gets revs nice and i am impatient to give her red line reving. After 60ml running in?
Cant wait to go icetrack.

It really sounds epic!!! I recon its because it has long exhaust system. But I think it needs to be redone, its frickin loud! Only revved it up to maybe 2500rpm, I wonder what noise it will make at 10k...

But what really confuses us is that idle is really nice, smooth and in quite low revs. Maybe only 1000-1100rpm...

Makes us wonder how "mild" ports and port timing Carl did..? I quess he does know what he is doing, so no worrys there. Afterall, bro asked him to do max rev range and torque, not max power...

But you cant believe our filings now! One big step forward was agognizing 5 year wait... To this point it has been really epic journey, and its only just has begun basically! So that you for your support!!!

Port timing on a PP... well the port is never actually ever closed is it the apex seal is what would close but they're only 2mm wide. So I would say you have 359.8 degrees of inlet timing

From what I can remember carl does 2 different port shapes on a PP, one is a squared of corners port, which gives max power max inlet etc and a D shape port which is more for a less of an extreme engine, more of an endurance engine so I'm guessing yours is the D shape port.

What size were the PP inlets welded too the housings? I'm prett certain Carla largest ones are either 62 or 64 mm diameter?

Are you using IDA carbs? If so what size are they?

Can't say what timing you need to put into it if the engine is running hot, I would suggest a call to Carl and he will point you in the right direction

What length have you done the primary exhaust headers before merging them into one? Varying lengths have a great effect, I learnt all this stuff years ago as my Rx4 was meant to be PP bit I've forgotten it all now! I had even contacted racing beat for advice and got a couple of emails from Jim Merderer himself!

Did carl explain about the intake trumpet length to help move the power into a range where best suits you?  Long trumpets should give better longer mid range torque, shirt ones make it peaky and make power up in the higher revs?

Grant,  seems like my brother hasnt answered you, even that I told him to long time ago :D

Yes, I recon its D shaped, not sure tho. I think inlet is about 56mm. Carb is 48. Quite "neutral" setup maybe, but bro wanted it that way.

Yes he did explain that trumpet stuff. Dont remember how long those are. Seems like quite normal lenght to me :D

When bro build that exhaust, we thought that long system would bring better torque. I think primarys are about 2 meters, and measurements are from Carl... But now we are not so sure about which is better. Some say that there is now big difference, and long system is better in all areas. I have tryed to learn and asked lots of questions in different places. But that long system is heavy, no doubt about that...

 ;D

Naah, you can see and feel the strenght of the ice. Best is to drill holes in to it so you can see that it really is frozen solid and that it is so called "iron ice"... Actually the hardest part is to figure out that how much weight that ice will hold. Cause you have to blow snow from the ice that it can get stronger and freeze better, its like maintaining your track to keep it in good condition....

We have little ATV, Mitsubishi pick-up and two tractors with blows. We use ATV when lake starts to freeze up and ice ice thin. After that, Mitsi. Last winter we didnt use tractors cause there werent not much snow

As I said in Holland to MRC crew, you all really should come ice racing! Its more than fun  :P

So, just came to work. In route, did some "drifting" with AWD . At one point hitted a limiter abit. Immidiately check engine light came on... Put Obd reader on, and it says that its lambda sensor failure... Bugger...

My wife had a 2T Arctic Cat the model name escapes me but that was an absolute animal, faster and lighter than my 800cc but the range was pretty poor (sound familiar?)

Hey Grant, do you still have some rotary stuff for sale? I remembered that you had/have AEM coils? One dude here was looking for those things...

Though that I should keep this topic alive. Unfortunately,  there is nothing to say. No progress at all...

I started to plan 2018 trip. And yes, I think it going to be to UK... I really wanted to attend Goodwood FOS and/or 7.7.2018 if that is going to happen. Howerer,  I think its impossible for me to get my vacation at July...

Then I started to think that last year I missed Rallycross 50years event at Lydden Hill, cause we desided to come to Netherlands. So abit Googleing and contacted Retro Rallycross series croup at Facebook. They answered me almost immidiately that there is two Retro Cross events at Lydden this year. 2nd April and 27th August...

So that really suits my plan to go around South-East England and see some castles and stuff. Lydden Hill has always been my need to go place, same Brands Hatch is too. Only thing I need anymore is that there would be rotary event too

Jarno, acouple of dates to ponder over:

Tunerfest Brands Hatch, Sunday 24 June? The RX-8 OC will have a stand and a large presence, plus club exclusive track sessions too. Clive took his race car out on track there last year. The day usually hosts a "Time Attack" round too, in which PeteH plans to compete in his Eurospec RX-8, with which he was very successful in 2017.

Here's a link to the RX-8 OC topic to give you some idea of the event in 2017. I've not been able to get to the event since the club started going 2 years ago, but it's in my diary for 2018  :)

https://www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=72803

Another event to think about is this one on 25/26 August. It's a static event held at Dunsfold, the "Top Gear" track. You might be able to tie this in with Lydden?  :13:

https://www.wingsandwheels.net/

It's a static event, but the RX-8 OC will have a stand for there for both days (camping options have been mentioned). I wen there about 3 years ago and it's a HUGE show with loads of interesting stuff for all the family.

Not sure if I'll get to the latter event though, as it's Gwyn's birthday on 25th Aug, but maybe try to arrange a long weekend in the area and combine it..... ;)

Both events are in the South East with loads of castles to visit. Dover Castle is well worth a visit as is Bodiam Castle (pic below). Gwyn and I went to both in 2016, basing ourselves in Rye on the coast for a week, a beautiful town with old cobbled streets (also pictured).

Thanks for tips Sir. :)

Yes, I have been researching and studying that area for a few years now. With those that you linked, also Hastings,  Rochester, Canterbury just to mention few. There really is lots of things to see and to visit!

At this point I'm leaning towards august, but not sure yet.

Check out Heaver Castle / Anne Boleyn's house, Queen of Henry the eighth till see lost her head.

The long room at the back is weird as it is the same as when she lived there and at the end of the room is a painting from the period.
When you look back down the room its spooky to see that except for the dog, you are seeing exactly what is in the painting.

Wings and Wheels, we did this as a club a couple of times, perhaps we will go this year, good day out  :)
