Title: revving low
Post by: muzzyd on June 14, 2004, 12:55:39 PM
Finally persuaded a mate to buy himslef an rx7, he has now got the opposite problem of me, low revs, while mine purrs away at 1200+, his idles at about 500rpms and seems as if it is really struggling, its got the usual mods, filter/exhaust/ecu but runs perfect when your accelrating or normal driving.  It doesnt rev this low all the time.
Oil was changed recently, along with plugs and visible pipes have been checked.
Any ideas?

Starts everytime hot or cold.  Not sure on the ECU but it was specified as uprated.

Any help appreciated.

what were the compression test results ?

Well if its an Apexi ECU you might need to re do the intial set up procedure which sorts out the idle under different electrical loads

that would be the first and best idea to try

No compression test done, but its not an apexi as I recognise what they look like.  The only problem with living in the sticks is the nearest place to go is probably about 100miles away.  Any suggestions on scottish based guys that can check this out?  No one in the area likes to tackle this sort of thing.

goddam it ALWAYS get a compression test when buying a Rex!!! :)

I don\'t know anyone in scotland unfortunately, there are some users in scotland, you may want to put a post up entitled "anyone know a rx-7 specialist in scotland ?"

good luck

Dave

I think I came up blank on that one before mate, apart from the guy in wishaw and an rr\'d in glasgow, I think most of the guys go over the border for specialist advice :(

Never got a compression test done on my rx and it runs like a dream, guess it was a risk but a good one so far, I just budgeted for a rebuild as did my mate as part of the costs.:)

yeah either way will do, anywya we digress

Isn\'t WGT quite far north ? maybe you could drive there

The reason I asked about compression is that mine had similiar symptons and turned out to be low compression, I\'d hope yours was more simple though

So its not an Apexi.
Try and post a pic of his ECU so we can see what make it is.
hmm the only thing i can think of then for erratic idle maybe clogged or dirty vacuum pipes to the plenum or throttle body

Hoping its something simple.  If I can get him to take a few pics I will post the ECU pics.

Quick question dave, did your rx run well even though the compression was low?  Reason I ask is that the car seems to have a lot of power and pull, just intemittantly drops to very low revs, sort of similar to what happens when you switch every electrical thing on in and rx (air con/full beam/stereo/ etc).

Low compression does not manifest itself so much in the higher rev range because obviously the compression is less becuase the rotors is spinning faster therefore needing less of a seal to be efective

I had idle issues and couldn\'t really put the air con on a idle for fear of stalling, after a recent rebuild and mapping session this is completely resolved

it is a sympton of low compression if other avenues such as blocked pipes etc have been eliminated

thing to remember is that i also after a while developed starting problems, and then got a compression test which showed low compression, she still pulled like a train though in the higher revs

might just be something simple, I wouldn\'t know what to look for, try ringing the specialist furthest north

Thanks Dave, appreciate the info.  Will try some of the northern located specialists.

If the idle problem doesnt happen all the time, then its looks like vacuum pipes to the plenum problem as the pipes when they became warm can open up hidden cracks and vent off air causing erratic idle.

Best to look at the simple stuff first and eliminate it before you start think its something major.

Ello muzzy

If you are looking for a specialist up here then forget it. However you could try getting in touch with The Garage.

http://www.the-garage.co.uk/contactus.htm

Speak to Marc if he is around. He is at least sympathetic.

Does the car in question have a boost gauge. If so, does it flutter? Get the revs up to 1000rpm and see how stable the needle is.
Let me know

I am on the case this weekend!  Should please the GF no end that I am going to be tinkering about under anothers bonnet! :D

Cheers bobster, boost gauge doesnt flutter in the car it remains steady.

That is a poor mans compression test. It won\'t actuall tell you anything about the compression only that it hasn\'t lunched a tip.

Is this a recent problem or is it the way the car came?

mne had a fluttery boost gauge, cos it had chucked a tip

Seems to be a recent problem as far as I know, not sure he would have noticed it among all his excitement.
