Hi my names adam and new to this site ive got a fd3s rx7 which ive had since november last year. currently on 49000 miles was rebuilt at 41800 but looks like it has blown a seal, it drives but lumpy idle and just sounds like the engine is not happy, it was getting mapped at tdi and broke on the dyno :(. so im in need of a rebuild.
To be honest i will probably take the engine out of the car myself( how hard can it be? :s). but need to know who is best to rebuild it. i want it street ported and built to a high spec so i can add front mount. single turbo etc etc after so i dont have to pay out so much at once.
ive heard of pip gardner at wgt. is there anyone else that anyone can reccommend. i live in sussex if it helps.
Many thanks....Adam
Define Best. Cheapest, strongest, most powerful?
Depends what you want.
As you are in Sussex your closest person would be Jason at Super7 Autos, which is good because he is ace. He\'s in the Henfield area. Next would be Re:Work in Portsmouth.
Personally I go to Carl Hayward in Newbury, but that might be a bit far for you.
nice one thank you mate, i want a real strong engine as i want to eventually get it running 450 - 500 bhp and basically want someone who is reknown for making strong engines that can handle this without blowing up 3 months down the line.
Well Jason at Super7 has an excellent rep. Had I known about him when I was having my engine rebuilt I would have gone there, rather than Carl Hayward (just because he is closer, no other reason).
His website is //www.super7autos.co.uk
Nice one, cheers buddy. How much do you reakon im gonna be rougly looking at for what i want? As im gonna have to get some overtime in i think :S
No idea to be honest. Best to ask Jason.
a Standard rebuild is around £3k if you want porting on top of that it will be more.
What you\'ve got to remember is that to reach that power it\'s not necessarily the engine you need to worry about, it\'s all the ancilliaries like increased cooling, mappable ECU (Apexi Power FC or something), turbos etc.
A 500bhp RX7 is a serious car. It will take out nearly anything on the road.
Your best bet it too talk to Jason, tell him what you want to do and he\'ll go through it with you.
You may also want to take a ride in a 500bhp RX7 to decide if you want that kind of power.
When I had mine mapped I was fixated on 1 bar of boost. That\'s what I wanted. Carl Hayward mapped it to 0.8 and said we\'ll take a spin in it and if you want more boost then we\'ll do it.
It scared the hell out of me. It still does.
And mine is an RX7 with probably 350-400bhp (dunno never dyno\'d it).
My suggestion is not to get hung up on figures. Build the car you want, rather than the car for pub talk.
Sorry, I don\'t mean to patronise you, you may have has some really fast cars, but really most people don\'t need an RX7 with massive bhp figures.
Best advice I can give you is ring around a few places and see what sort of response and feel you get for each one from the phone call. If they\'re not interested in the job over the phone, imagine how they would be to deal with if something needs rectifying etc. Make sure you get any small print verified, find out what is replaced in the rebuild and take note of it. Don\'t let price dictate where you go. Research all of the options and go with your gut feeling and don\'t feel pressured into choosing the "most popular" builder amongst users etc.
I agree with the above
Mir
As Jit and Mir say, Do your home work. There are also people who work for themselves that offer rebuilds, Join fduk as there is a thread on a chap on there.
Keith.
well before it blew on the dyno it was running 280 bhp at the wheels which is about 330 at the flywheel i think. i think its quick but no where near how i want it to be. my mate had a starlet turbo which was running 337 bhp it was the second quickest in the uk when he built it, now this was a seriously quick motor considering its weight, blew away lambo gallardos, bentley gt\'s.
this is also going to be my last car i will be moddifying for a long time as want to start up my own electrical company and will have to get a van. So basically i want to go all out with it. i know 500 bhp it a hell of a lot of power but i know it will blow anything out of the water.
i know what you mean about the whole feel of how they talk to you as been speaking to one bloke and he just doesnt seem to be interested, hes a well talked about mechanic ( not naming names though ) but i dont think he will be the right guy for me.
thanks for your help lads have sent a few emails out and see what responses i get, will let you know where i decide.
oh and yeah ive already got a power fc, full turbo back racing beat exhaust but will want to run on a single.
sorry about the long reply. was never good at keeping it short and sweet.
The list of builders are
WGT
REworx
Rotechniks
Dragon
RX Motors
Hayward

And of course because I am biased lol http://www.oldones.co.uk/
I have to ask.....
looking at your post that engine totals 7000 ish miles on a new engine??
I would also be asking serious questions as to why a new engine only lasted that long!
Are you sure engine has gone pop??
Just thought I\'d ask

This is the reason why its gone pop quoted below, its sounds as the mapper at TDI has gone too lean on on the dyno, a lot of mappers of piston engines dont realise you have to go richer on a rotary and a lot less aggressive on the timing. If the mapper was being conservative and it still popped, it points to the ancillaries not being up to scratch so if the Original poster does not sort these issues it will still go pop after another rebuild. 9 times out of 10 its not the engine builders faults but the ancillaries eg ignition, very old engine loom etc etc
Quote from: splinter53;764399, it was getting mapped at tdi and broke on the dyno :(. so im in need of a rebuild.
Hey blitzy,
i see in your signature you now have south coast seals in your engine... what was the reason for the move from PTS??
yeah thats what I was thinking about the ancillaries......
Tis a shame that something like that has popped your engine mate - i really feel for you - but on the bright side as you menioned - can now go for bigger power and porting :)
G
Two reasons I moved to SCR they are half the price almost lol , plus the way SCR have made them I can use 2 piece on full bridge porting.
But I was impressed with the PTS they did the job well in three years I had them with all the abuse I threw at them coping well with 3 major overheating events
yeh fair enough.. i run them in my car back home and the engine still starts on the key hot or cold after 8years and plenty of 9000rpm skids!!
i am contenplating if i should stick with mazdas or go scr this time round..
As for engine rebuilding in the UK - Do you research !!

Hi Graham,
Are you the same Graham from Leciester that bought my white to4r that had 424rwhp and we went out on the motorway and mapped with water injection to 1.4 bar and we crapped ourselves when this benmd appeared out of no where? If so hope you doing well mate have you got another rx7 yet?

Hi Brian,
yes I am one and the same person - living in Preston now and I just bought another FD on sat just gone so looking forward to getting her home!!
Been away from the cars since I sold the FD you mentioned above!!
As always I will be looking for some nice power too!!
Hope you are well mate
G
get yourself along to santa pod and see which builders cars are running the numbers??

Good stuff welcome back mate. Funny I\'m a t working talking to a colleague about that white t04r and then about half hour later I\'m on mrc and I see the username Mulv, previous owner of the said car I\'m was talking about. Trust your doing well mate, will be looking out for pics of your new beasty.

Ps I\'m not sure I\'ll ever fully recover from the fright of seeing that bend loom out of nowhere, I must say you are very calm at the point of near death lol.

Sorry mate the least I could do after coming on here and spoiling your thread(sorry) is answer your question, best person to do your engine is Jaydee.

calm... hmm yes I am generally a laid back person, but I think my calm demenour had a lot to do with the fact I was concentrating so hard trying not to crash the car and keep it in a straight line, I just appeared calm.......trust me I was a tad concerned!!!!
G
only one person i fully trust is oldones, just look at the last few santa pod events, oldones cars in the finals. reliable strong power, ive seen the quality of the porting and NO one does it better. pictures all the way through from strip down to rebuild with photos of the new bits going in, i know he is very busy due to all the motors he\'s building, but im sure he will squeeze you, great bloke.
Just checked where they are and there only like 5 mins drive from my gfs which is ideal. Have sent them an email but what sort of prices do they charge? As was thinking about taking it to Carl at Hayward rotary but he hasn\'t replied to an email I sent the other day :@ lol. Basically want a street port engine build and map the power fc.
yip Oldone built my engine and I won the past Jap drag series round at PTM show at Pod :D
you can contact him on the fduk.org forum , forum name on there youngone
The best thing with him dude he will take pictures on the strip down and build, you know you wont get ripped off and he will put in the parts you paid for
Does he give any kind of warranty? Only really gonna use mine on the road.
oldones FTW.:D
I would echo Brian here - Kerim and Jaydee at Powergains built my engine (large streetport) and single turbo setup (gt4088) for track days and fast road use and it has been absolutely solid. Great power (all my mates with Scoobs/RS4s/supercharged elise) etc have commented how strong it feels and I\'ve had no issues with it since. I received a steady stream of photos during the initial strip down and porting, and they were happy to let me watch them build it all back up afterwards.
The great thing about Powergains is that it\'s a one stop shop - solid engine build and excellent mapping from the guys with excellent support afterwards, they even popped up to Snetterton on my first track day to see how I was doing, help out if I needed anything and also offered to fine tune the map on circuit.
Cheers
Ross
