Hi,
Just introducing myself, i bought the orange 33,000 mile RX7 on Ebay.
I have had a few of these now and my father had one when they were new.
Water pump has packed up seems pretty straight forward job but any hints and tips would be great.
What is the best Engine oil to use?
Thanks in advance.:cheers
Hi,
welcome to the forum, that looks a very nice car you\'ve bought yourself.... one of the cleanest series 2 cars we\'ve seen in a long time.
The waterpump is an easy job, I\'d change the thermostat at the same time and only use a genuine mazda stat.
As for oil, only use mineral oil. The RX7 draws oil out of the sump and injects it into the intake to lubricate the rotor tips... it then gets burnt in the combustion process. Synthetic oils aren\'t designed to burn and may leave damaging deposits inside the engine.
There are 2 schools of thought on which mineral oil.
Some owners swear by a good quality oil like Castrol GTX, others like me just put in the cheapest I can find and then change it every 2000 miles.... it\'s served me well.... my oil is always clean!
Cheers,
Ian
Thanks Ian, also who is the best for parts, as i also wish to buy a distributor cap and rotor arm.
speak to Tim at RX Motors... good service and fair prices....

some Mazda specialists will sting you for spares.
I use Valvoline 20w 50 mineral racing oil, I find it a happy medium between cheap and GTX, it costs about £32 per 5 litres and I also run it as premix and had no problems.
As Ian said, rxmotors are great.
Hi Anthony, and wellcome, where are you in London, as I get alot of my parts from Don at Mazda Romford, he has always been a great help to me.
Good luck and don\'t forget we like photos ..........
Dibs
PS I use Castrol Magnatec in mine.
you can get a rotor arm from here...

Welcome to the club Anthony :)
I\'ve got nothing to say that others haven\'t already covered, but just wanted to say that you\'ve come to the right place to get help on these cars.
As others have said, pictures are always good! :WaveBye
Welcome! :D
Greetings Anthony.
Welcome as everyone above. I got a Rotor Arm from japarts.co.uk and it works a treat. Speak to Steven there 0845 664422. Every time you order anything from anywhere make sure they know it\'s a Series 2 1st Generation FB, as there are 3 slightly different Series cars in the 1st Gens. 12A engines but very early cars had points not electronic pick up.
Castrol GTX has always been my preference BUT it\'s now gone part synthetic. Dooh.
You could do worse than check out the Petrol Station places at Supermarkets; Morrisons near me for example sometimes has an offer on Texaco mineral oil at under £10 per 5 litre.
Have you called your car anything yet? We all like names for our machines. By the way I think the colour is Renaissance Red, like a Peony Red Metallic? It\'s not really Orange?
Cheers Dave.
David I\'m glad you sorted the colour out, for one minute when he said orange I thought of that orange car with large rear spoiler that was for sale sometime ago .........:Hammer
Sorry no names, the only cars that really have names are my 65 Beetle and 70 Fiat 500. I have had a few RX7s an S2 when i was at college, and a beautiful red S3 a couple of years ago that i sold to a chap in Northern Ireland. This RX7 is ok, few bits i was disapointed with, some small dents around the body the sort you can see in certain lights but to be expected with an old car, the fuel guage tells me sometimes how much fuel i have and a little judder when you take up drive from stand still (any ideas) oh yeah and the the vinyl on the top of the drivers door has got torn and deteriated through the years but generally happy as it seems to be an honest car. Oh yeah and the water pump now. Big spoilers not really for me, i like originality, having said that i do own a big spoiler on another car.:Talking1
Fuel gauge works sometimes? That\'s better than most, usually no reading at all.
You might find pulling off and spraying the sender plug contacts with WD40 does the trick for you....located behind the N/S rear wheel, but plastic panel screws are always rusted.
The little judder....might settle down if the car is used more (mileage says it\'s hardly had any use). Otherwise clutch plate time?.....Secondly the Prop shaft UJ\'s?....but they are very good on these cars, last virtually for ever. Thirdly weak Gearbox or Engine mounts? Again not usual.
The Red S3 you sold to N. Ireland.....You wouldn\'t have the Reg to hand would you? Only I keep a register of all known surviving 1st Gens and I\'d like to see if it\'s on there. Plus did your S2 car ever have a previous Reg? Again I\'d like that if you would be prepared to let me know. If you don\'t want to post up then you could email dgnock at btopenworld dot com
Cheers Dave.
