Title: How much boost is to much
Post by: Drag Emperior on June 13, 2004, 11:24:19 PM
Hi just after getting my rex going today after engine change, and i took her for a run to see how she was going. She is putting up about 0.5 on the first turbo and when the secound kicks in 1.5 then she blew the pipe off boost gauge. is this the norm boost.

And is this ecu programmable?

1.5:eek:  normal boost on twin turbos is about generally about 0.8, id would have expected yours to be a bit higher cos of the mods, but that is very high! are they standard twin turbos?

Dont think they can handle much past 1.0 and stay reliable...

We are talking bar arent we?

Standard turbos and 1.5 bar,  i though it was a bit much when the pipe came off

it says ROM(Read Only Memory) I think its a addon chip/pcb which KS put into the factory ECU? so they slapped a sticker on the back? are there any other stickers on the ends etc?

Knightsports do a Apexi PowerFC for the FD3S, they put a sticker on the front of the unit after they\'ve tuned it with the mods and also it should come with a certificate from KS listing all the mods etc.

Since you have aftermarket performance parts on it I suggest you get yourself a PowerFC.

Look at the top right corner of the sticker-max b (boost) 0.9kg which is just under 13psi.Check the wastegate isn\'t stuck shut when the second turbo kicks in or a sticky solinoid.

Piggy backed on the ecu or shoved up behind the dash some where. You should be able to see the solenoids in the engine bay and follow the wiring back thru the bulkhead to the box IF u have one.

Regards the Knightsports ECU. I\'d be a little wary of caning it on  that. The reprogrammed/chipped jap ecus are meant to be pretty good, but you do read some not so good stuff about them too. They are likely to be running rich granted, but you cant be sure about its entire map. And as soon as you change the spec of your car from how it was when tuned by Knightsports or whoever (if it hasnt been changed already - who knows...) you are basically stepping out side the (safety) parameters of your ecus map...

*Heres the bit when I pretend to know what I\'m talking about:)*

plus the fact its running different fuel.. you can\'t even remap it!so save your pennies and buy a PFC.... as it happens I have some coming over is about 2 weeks time:D   what? just a harmless bit of advertising thats all:bandit

heres a pic of a standard ECU with a REDOM chip/PCB board put on, Your should look similar.. I don\'t trust it myself:o
The SPOON ECU\'s for Honda\'s do something similar, where they take your stock ECU and *ADD* their chip/board onto it... then sell it for over £600:eek:  FOR A CHIPPED STOCK ECU!!

That one looks like the RE-A one that my friend had and blew his engine up with when he pressed the fog light button down and resultantly ran over 1bar on asda petrol , , lol

Yeah i wouldn\'t trust it on uk petrol, best off saving up for a programmable ecu.

Paul:)

Why did you not say the fog light thing sooner, i think i mit have a problem.  If i was driving a piston car i would think ok off a cylinder that is the way she is acting on the second turbo ok up to that, was up
