Title: Blitz MFC - I\'ve ended up with it!
Post by: papercutout on May 14, 2011, 01:27:56 PM
Well, yeah - I\'ve ended up with it and am wondering what to do! I\'ve searched the net and not been fruitful - most of the posts were actually from when Grinder bought it and was trying to work out what to do with it! So if he can shed some light...

I get (vaguely) what it does - it removes the fuel cut, and allows you to play with the fueling levels, right?

But the questions I am asking:

I have a R-magic ECU in the car atm (standard map for something like this, 0.9 bar boost, exhaust, filter etc), should I put this in with the R-magic, or with the stock ECU and modify the fuelling with the stock ECU there? (this is a plug and play item for those that don\'t know, plugs into the loom before the ECU)

Where does it adjust the fuelling? Through the rev range? At the top, bottom, mid, all three?

There\'re the twiddly knobs on the front -\'start\', \'initial\' and \'gain\', what does each one do?

What is the best way to monitor the effect this is causing to the fuelling without running it on a dyno?

Should I just buy an AFR gauge so I can work it out?

Thanks everyone!

Brett gave this to me, so he may be your best bet.

I was under the impression it has an afm on it? Maybe theres some settings which wont modify your current fueling so you could use it literally as an afm? TBH unless you\'re having issues i wouldn\'t bother with it

I don\'t know, I\'ve not managed to find out a lot tbh! (although I only started last night) From what I HAVE found out though it does seem as though it can potentially be very useful! Grinder was talking about it being a lower-tech alternative to a SAFC.

I said AFR, air/fuel ratio gauge, not AFM. It might well MEASURE the AFM, but there\'s no display on there is there?

IIRC it displays a series of LED\'s... the colour indicates wether you are rich or lean...  but other than connecting it to a 12V suppl yo ensure it worked, I never used it.

It can be used to alter the fuel, but I never had a chance to play with it on the car.

Cool. I\'ll wait for grinder (or can someone PM him for me?), since he seemed to do a LOT of researching/asking about it a few years back.

crickey ... this is an old piece of kit ;)

from the research i found ( and it was vague at best - i even emailed blitz about it ) - it is a fuel computer .. but what it actually did was beyond me

IIRC you plugged it in and you could up the fuel levels to make sure that if you were running higher boost , it would add more fuel for you

i suppose if you were brave you could plug it in and set it to do NOTHING .. just to prove that it works ?

I dont know if i posted up all the info about it - but im sure i might have an email somewhere from blitz and the one i had to send to the insurance company ( they hadnt heard of one either )

it was one of those things i bought and just never used ( like all the stuff in the garage ;) - i still have a limited edition SAFC somewhere thats never seen the light of day and a G Meter i bought off Prof thats still in its box !! )

im wondering if the start up allows to you fuel up for the inital start up and tick over , the initail bit COULD be say the first xxxx revs and then the gain , that might be what it gains in fuel thru the rev range ??

Ideally it needs using with a wide band just to see what the hell it does ?!??!

Well, if you do manage to find that email you got from Blitz, I\'d be grateful! Basically seeing what \'start\', \'initial\' and \'gain\' do, and are for would be a fantastic start!

I guess a wideband is on the books sometime then!

You mean there was a time when you weren\'t a tight-arse? Only someone who isn\'t would keep all those things unused! :p (must have been in 2004?)

Ive always been tight .. hence im not telling you what i paid for it ! :)

right , done some diggin :

this is an email ( or part of from a guy who was ebaying out ) :

QuoteAlright,
The first dial you set until you hit fuel cut.If you hit it again then turn it up some more..
This is a thing that must be tuned just like any other. It isn\'t a plug and play RUN the nuts out of it.
Yes but had you bought mine I would have been happy to teach you how to use it!
Get that from your current seller ;)
Also My unit is in better condition than the pictures shown.
Anyways.
No problem if you are on //www.rx7club.com search my name and send me a private message I will help you out there.
jreynish is my screen name.

Good Luck
Jeff

then something from a company called racelogic :

QuoteStuart,

The thing about this kind of equipment is that is only used to get the fuelling right according to the other modifications that have been carried out on the car. The unit on its own is not a performance enhancing product - it ensures that no engine damage will occur as a result of the other changes.

So for instance - if you fitted this to a totally standard car, and increased the fuelling across the entire rev range, you would end up with lower performance because the engine would be running rich and not running to its optimum potential. However, if you were to increase thboost on that engine you may very well need to increase the fuelling in order to maintain the correct air/fuel ratio.

If you want me to put the above into a document I am quite happy to do so. What I can\'t do I\'m afraid is give you specifics as to the perfomance increase the controller can provide - it is part of a package of modifications.

Mike.

i have 3 scanned images of the unit - but they are pointless - just pics of it basically

but no one seems to actually know HOW to set the thing up !! LOL

me again .. this is from the orig seller

Quotehi mate ive found out some info. the first dial you set when your turbo boost comes in around 2700rpm the start light will come on when the blitz unit is set.
the second is initial gain which will up your fueling when the start light comes on (this should be set to about halfway)
the last dial is used to set your fueling for high rpm.
you carnt .... up the fueling (run lean) the unit has a warning light ( where it says fuel limit on the front of the controller) this will light up red if you are running too lean.
i hope this helps (i got this info from a friend who deals in import cars)
regards chris.

and this

Quotehi mate this unit was in my rx when i imported it from japan. i havent touched the settings on the controller. it was used with a hks boost controller and was running 14psi of boost.the only info i know is it is used to up the fueling. the 4 pin connector was not used on my car. my rx didnt have a fcd so i assume that this unit removes the fuel cut.my friend imports jap cars i will ask him he may know more about this unit.
regards chris.

so i obviously did a fair bit of research .. just wondering now why i didnt fit it .. it sounds pretty cool to be honest

if you dont want it - just stick it in the post back to me ;)

Haha, thanks for all that digging! I did see in a post from several years ago approx what you paid for it! But I doubt you\'ll be able to beat what I paid ;) I guess you didn\'t pm Jeff on RX7 club then?

Does sound useful, I\'ll try to give it a go next weekend or so. From what the original seller says, that\'d be a really good indicator of whether your car is det\'ing or not!

Oh and this is what I got from Blitz-UK :p

"Hi Ben, I have just looked back through Blitz Power books dating back to the year 2000, and can find no listings for a MFCS, suggesting that Blitz discontinued this way before then.
As we did not take over the UK Blitz distributorship until 2006, we have no information on this unit at all I\'m afraid.
I know it is a Blitz Japan policy not to keep information on products that have been discontinued for more than a couple of years.

Best Regards
Tim"

With my present situation, I might just get an AFR gauge and plug this in.

But just looked at widebands - I don\'t have the money, but it reads as if they\'d be a really good idea. But £200 or so? I don\'t have that cashola, and if I did, I have higher priority things to spend money on atm. Like getting a job as a PT, and starting my life!

Should be able to get a Wideband for under £100 if you shop around - but they are an essential tool for tuning - it will tell you so much more than most other gauges

Like this?

Then get a cheap gauge.

Cheapest I can find as a bundle is these (there is also an AEM unit for about £10 more):

You need a wideband controller - the innovate one is good:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Innovate-LC1-controller-/160610436733?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item256520c67d

Then the wideband sensor itself (Bosch 5 wire) - they are normally about £45

With the Innovate - you can use one of it\'s analog outputs to drive a cheapo AFR gauge - result is you get an accurate gauge that actually works.  You can also use a £5 dpm module with full scale of 1.999v - the innovate\'s output is designed to drive these directly :) :)

This also looks interesting - but don\'t know much about this one...

This is what I have:

Oddly is £40 more for the same product in the performance section lol

Arg. What are you planning on running this on? Nothing other than light mods (exhaust, air filter etc) I hope.. Especially if you are planning on tuning it yourself and have little experience?

It\'s a nice idea, but very old and at best rough tech! The thought of calibrating the fuelling requirements of a car with just three rotary dials (well two for tuning fuel!) -when you think of the time spent logging, comparing and tweaking fuel matrix maps on a standalone, makes me cringe! (especially on an engine so sensitive to knock.)

Also unless the unit comes with a wideband lambda sensor (which i very much doubt) then the little lights warning on the unit warning you about running lean are next to unless when boost tuning. Even more scary if people put their faith in them

Best to save until you can get proper standalone. You can get a harness from Banzai racing with all the sensors you need for fit a common FD3S apexi Power FC into an FC3S for little for around £100-150iirc

Ben - Yes, only light mods. Exhaust and air filter, and slightly upped boost - if you read the other thread I have going atm, you\'ll see why I\'m thinking of using it. Basically instead of an aftermarket ECU, use this with a wideband and AFR gauge (NOT relying on the sensors on the unit).

For such a simple function I think it\'ll be spot on, and the only cost to me will be the Wideband sensor and AFR gauge. It\'s not liking I\'m trying to map something ported, or larger turbo or bigger injectors...!

If you\'d like to contribute to my other thread too (there\'re still plenty of unanswered questions) then go for it!

At the end of the day, the whole Wideband sensor and AFR gauge are a good idea anyway. But even they will have to wait, finances dictate that advertising myself as a PT so potentially I can finally start getting clients comes first. I\'ll just run at 0.4bar boost ish.

This thread mate:
http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71135

I\'m basically now just trying to work out why I\'m still getting a boost cut at 0.5bar with an R-magic ECU fitted, that should be mapped for upto 0.9 bar or so.
