Pull the plug off the sender on the fuel tank-can\'t miss it as it\'s the only thing on the fuel tank with a cable attached. Pain in the ass to reach-I found easiest way was up the rear of the rear nearside wheel reach up and it sits on a slight angle on the end of the tank.

Bridge out the two contacts on the plug with a bit of wire and with ignition on look at the gauge. If it reads max or end pegs then it\'s a sender fault.

If it does owt, it\'s a gauge fault.

It\'s not too bad, worth the effort as a non functioning fuel gauge in an RX7 is a bit of a roulette.

No jake, testing is not a lengthy process at all. You can get access if you take the plastic guard panel off behind the N/S rear wheel. Trouble is that the panel screws rust up.

Then pull off the connector, short the 2 wires together, turn on the ignition and your gauge will go up to max if it\'s the tank sender to blame (which it nearly always is).

If it is the sender then getting it out is more problematic \'cos the tank screws will be shot. But at least you\'ll know what is to blame.

I\'ve got this problem but I know exactly what my mpg is. So I brim the tank, do 150 miles then brim it again.  Must sort that gauge out this summer....grr....

Yeah cheers. How much do you think it will cost to repair? What will I need to get replaced? :( I mean the thing is the gauge is reading empty?

Should be same sender, but your car is Series 3 Jake and I know the sender is from a Series 2 car. You can\'t go wrong with the seller\'s offer of £10 if it works though.

Anyway, secondhand S3 senders should be cheap enough even if that one is different. All you need to do is find a breaking car that had a working fuel gauge.
Problem then, as above, is the work to get it out.....trust me, that little ring of screws around the gauge can be a basxtard to undo. You may need to get the tank out.
Be aware then that the tank\'s leak on the top near the filler after all these years, so you may want to carefully check it over.....don\'t wirebrush too hard though!!!!!

My gauge stopped just after I changed the fuel tank. I think I was a bit rough popping the sender into the new tank. Did we say new tank\'s were virtually unobtainable now? Oh dear Jake....nevermind, we can sort it somehow. You\'re not alone in this. (But buggxer grovelling on the garage floor with you....we\'ll keep typing instead.....:Typing
