Title: Newbie from Southampton
Post by: Recoy2k on May 09, 2011, 12:47:09 PM
Hi all,

been into Jap cars for many years now and after having a few months out I am on the lookout for a new project and have decided on an FD RX7, going to start with a shell and build something special, looking forward to getting onn the road and meeting a few of you.

Brief history of my cars,

Started with a DC2 Type R, then had an MR2 N/A, then a Civic Type R (which got broken :( ) then onto a daily diesel whilst I recovered from my crash before getting another Civic Type R, then an S2000 and my last toy was a 200sx with 450bhp :)

Welcome! And good for choosing the rotary path! You\'ll have more than one before you know it :p

Nice history! Honda fan myself, can\'t wait to see pictures of your project as it emerges and grows :D

Wotcher, welcome to MRC and all that. New build threads are always good, especially someone looking at things with a new perspective.

Welcome to the Mad Lands :p :wave
Good luck with your project. Do you have any ideas what you\'d like to try and do with it?

I have some idea, to the disgust of most people I am thinking of steering away from the legend that is rotary and switching to an LS1 V8, done a bit of research and found a company that does custom subframes to fit the V8 and a few other bits to make it easier but want to do a bit more research before I make a final decision, any ideas are fully welcomed I would just like to do something a bit different :)

Would that be Dyno Torque in Brum, yeah? If not, then I\'d recommend Craig the gaffer there. His conversions are literally factory-quality, he\'s had several mag featured. Superb fabricator and engineer.

I am sorry, I couldn\'t resist saying this...Why installing a virus in an RX7 FD..LS1 IN ROTARY POWERED SPORTS CAR IS JUST UNCOMPROMISABLE.. Sorry, but if you really have 10k to sphere, then 20b is the way forward..do it slowly (Not like me :() and you will enjoy the final result.

Anyway, its your money, so I can\'t say much....

Its amazing how quickly you can go off some people :p
Good luck with it anyway. V8s do sound good but you just can beat the feeling of driving a sorted rotary. Its a mixure of anxiety and sheer joy :rollin

lol it\'s ok I know they are a purists car and I still havent fully decided the way in which I will go, but to get a car and do an LS1 conversion is not going to cost anywhere near 10k to do and finish, I am lucky to have access to a lot of tool and fabricators etc and have good friends who can do the work for beer money to make things cheaper.
As i said I am fully open to suggestions and ideas that may be better than a V8 :)

Lol I love the sound of a V8, I have had both an Alfa Romeo and a very highly tuned 2litre turbo so I know the feeling of utter joy from the raw power mixed with the fear of something breaking any second lol

I\'ve been in (and been priviledged to drive) Andy Papercup\'s Dyno Torque-converted V8 FD, and it\'s incredible. I would love one, no argument. But only if I had a rotary one as well

Yep I had my 200sx for 9 months and spent £3500 keeping it on the road and running properly, nothing can replace the smile when the loud pedal worked and I could get traction but I would love to have that along with some form of reliability as well lol

If I could afford 2 cars I would do it but I have to just have the one toy for now lol

Yeah, there\'s a really long clip I never uploaded along the humps on the Guildford Roman road (you know the bit) where the G-force meant the camera was all over the place. Funny, but not especially crucial viewing :Giggle

I know where you mean. You can loose other cars in the dips so makes overtaking fun. :p

probably why it\'s soild white lines and they keep dropping the speed limit every bloody year, then . I think I actually left planetary orbit on my old \'Blade along there once. Certainly the landing was a bit alarming :2eek

I bet it was. I\'m not stupid enough to actually do any overtaking along there in a car. Would just be my luck to meet something BIG coming the other way :o

RX Motors have a BRAND NEW bare shell for sale, never had a thing on it. Don\'t tell him about the LS1 plan though as he won\'t sell it to you lol.

Any particular reason for that? Was looking at the LS1\'s but once I have the shell I will do some more research on the exact engine that I will put in it, will hopefully be buying a shell this weekend

They are easier to get hold of and are the latest derivation. A mate has a shell if you don\'t manage to get one.

Ok cool thanks for the advice, I have a shell sorted now, so looking a bit further into engines, have been researching the Lexus 4.0l V8 which seems like a viable option
