Title: Not cooling enough?
Post by: merlin2002 on May 09, 2011, 12:21:50 PM
Ok here\'s my problem
Car drives fine no smoke, had mot Saturday noticed car running hot, so pushed a/c button and everything was fine, temps came down to around 85!
Some fluid was lost due to near overheating temps.

I\'m planing to replace thermostat and thermo switch, perhaps one or both are not doing there job.
It\'s as if fans are not coming on to cool car down?
The car has had a new 54mm rad fitted and all been flushed out, as car has sat for around 1.5 years!
Any thoughts?  I plan on doing a champ bubbles test again after new thermostat, but did check it when I bled system and all was fine?

Any thoughts would be awsome!

Thanks
Rob

What ECU are you running? What temperature gauge are you relying on? The dash one?

First thing is to check that the fans are of course coming on - pretty easy to check byu the large gush of warm air!
If not, then it may be a relay or wiring fault.

Standard or aftermarket fan setup?

Potentially insulting question #1 - when you fitted the new rad, did you definitely plug the fans back in?

Standard ecu and standard fan setup, I\'m going to earth the thermoswitch to check fans are doing something when i replace the switch!
I\'m using a his temp gauge one of the funny ones with a copper line with a spring around it!
Thanks

When you say \'running hot\', what temperatures are you hitting dude? :) Lots of people seem to panic when the car hits about 100, but that\'s not really anything to get too concerned about as the stock fans only come on a little over that :)

Was just going to say the same as Si, these car do tend to run upto 100 but thats ok as long as its not going mucch past that.
A couple of tricks you can do is to put your heating on within the car (not great in the summer but it does help) and to also put your side lights on. For some reason it make the fans run a little faster... or so i\'ve been told. I\'ve seen tuners do this when dynoing cars

It creeps up to the 100 Mark and just a pinch over which is when I started to panic lol
Just seems to get there pretty sharpish and also leaked a little from overflow!
Also the rad cap seemed to leak even on cold start with no presure in system, the cap was new, so I purchased a 1.1 bar cap as I\'ve seen people running this pressure!

Thanks

Change the rad cap then. If its leaking it wont be holding pressure. Plus you dont really need a 1.1bar cap, the standard one is fine

Ok. maybe go round and check all the hoses to the rad and the heater matrix and make sure they are tight and not leaking. Even a tiny leak could cause the temps to rise as it cant hold good pressure in the system

Leaky/not completly sealing rad cap?

ok update, found 1 hose clamp that looked dodgy from throttle body, so replaced that, replaced thermostat which looked rather ill with persihed rubber!
I bled the system, i noticed some very small champ bubbles.....but they stopped then started again once car got up to temp, but this could of just been water starting to boil i guess??
now I have noticed this problem if I crush the radiator top hose with my hand I can here water gushing in the rad, which I assume is a air pocket due to angle of rad etc etc.
am i right in thinking this will cause overheating and I need to somehow get the rad 100% full?  maybe raise the front of car as high as i can?

peoples opinions please?

Just so you know i used the bottle on filler cap method of refil and bleeding as well as taking the pipe off the throttle body to bleed through.

Thanks

They take yonks to bleed of air - I had to do it about 5 or 6 times, especially if you\'ve got a multi pass rad.Reckon mine usually takes 5 or 6 hot/cold/top up cycles for the level to settle. Don\'t panic yet.
Small bubbles may well just be the remaining air pockets clearing slowly.
