Title: Help!!! 1985 series 1 mark 3 restoration
Post by: jakeyd07 on May 07, 2011, 09:31:21 PM
hi there, i have recently come to inherit a white 1985 Mazda Rx-7 series 1 Mark 3. the vehicle is in good condition and runs like a dream! the car is entirely original. there is some surface rust and i am working on filling the odd hole and prepping for a paint touch up. there are however some issues. One of the problems is that the fan is constantly turning! is the fan meant to be constantly running? im unsure if this is a result of the constant running of the fan, but the belt that connects to the alternator and other wheels keeps snapping!!! what could be the cause of this? how can i resolve the issue? help during my restoration would be greatly appreciated and any words of advise would be great. many thanks jake.

PS if pictures would help i can upload if need be.

It sounds like you have a problem with your viscous coupling, they stop working and the fan turns at the same speed as the engine and the belts burn out in no time at all. I had to change mine, you can get a second hand one from  Tim at RX motors but some have changed them for electric fans, there are various threads on this forum about them.

PS wellcome to the ownership of one of these great cars and we do love pics ...........

Yeah that exactly what happens, it just gets so hot and snapps, its not slack or tight, and everything moves freely! there is a garage up the road from me, and he says he can put a little electric motor one one? which means the fan kicks in when needs be? whats it worth doing? ill get some photos on tomorrow ;).

Quote from: jakeyd07;760962how do you upload images onto the post?

by far the easiest way is to open a free photobucket account and upload them to there.... you can then just copy and paste the [IMG] code into your post.
This way, you don\'t have to worry about image sizes and you retain full control of them.... if you want to delete them you can or you can copy them onto other forums without having to upload again.

Welcome to the forum by the way!

I like the red stripe, and would like to put a stripe in my moulding, but being a red car I\'m not sure what colour to use, as I don\'t fancy silver, any comments.

Jake,

your photos are difficult to follow. If you edit your post, put each photobucket image code on a separate line with a space in between and they will then follow one above the other. You only have 10 mins after posting to edit though.

yeah iv been under a couple of times, and had a bit prod :), just the odd little bit of surface rust but its solid. ill not be able to tell properly until i get it up on a stands but its fairly solid. i dont know if theres anywhere i should look out for where theres a usual problem??? i know that the thin bit of metal under the engine has a fist size hole in it but i dont think thats an issue, just putting rust inhibitor on places where needed :)

The front nosecone looks holed, can get these £20>£30 on ebay.
You need to get car up on stands & search everywhere underneath,fb\'s are very good at hiding rust.
Usual places,sill ends,all of chassis,inner arches,outer arches,suspension mounts etc.
Seen it loads of times,a new owner with what looks like a g8 condition fb,only to find horrors lurking underneath, better to find out before spending time & money!
ta stu[plenty of posts on here ref areas to look for rust]

yeah the nose cone is in mid prep. i think im just going to fill it and spray it ;) ill have a look out! my main worry is structural rust. so far i have flushed the radiator. scrubbed rust and primed body work. the only things that dont work on the car is the electric mirrors, viscous coupling and the small indicator light on the side of the car! and the fuel gauge. does anyone know how to repair a broken fuel gauge?

Post by: Ian65 on May 08, 2011, 04:21:19 PM
pull the plug off the sender unit where it plugs into the tank ( just behind the n/s/r wheel) and short the connector out. Turn the ignition on and see if the gauge goes to full. If it does, the sender is knackered and your best bet is to get a second hand sender from a scrap series 3. Don\'t bother trying to fix it, when they\'re broke, that\'s it really.
If the test doesn\'t activate the gauge, then it\'s a wiring or gauge fault.... more time consuming to solve.

Welcome Jake - gr8 to see another new owner.  You couldn\'t have chosen a better car and colour (waiting for the guys to hit me re their own colour preferences).
You need advise and/or technical information - you\'ll get it here for sure, the guys on this forum know these cars better than the agents.

See Ian\'s thread relating to what to look for as far as rusted areas - it\'s a must, also various threads re the viscous coupling replacement or removal & fitting of electric fan(s).  The main issue is to get the body sorted and then everything else comes natural.
Enjoy the ride it\'s brilliant.

ps - loads of pics, we just love them.
:cheers

Restoration is coming along well! I\'m busy filling holes on the front and other small areas! It\'s a hard job to do just getting it right! It seems flat enough and I\'ll stick some photos up :) iv had a look at the rust guide and fortunately the Mazda is just a little rusty on the surface :) gonna get A grey primer for the filled areas. it\'s getting closer to being MOT worthy :) I\'ll keep you posted thanks again.

just a few pics of the filling process! alot smoother than it looks, honest ;) the parts i havent filled i will do, they are where the iconic mazda badge goes. im using resin with hardener to paste fiberglass strips behind the awkward bodywork so the filler has something to hold to.
