Title: \'89 EGI \'it\' - Work in Progress
Post by: Lacey on May 06, 2011, 12:23:12 PM
Okay so you\'ve probably mostly all seen pictures so far so you know the story so far, but for those of you who don\'t here\'s a sum-up.

Bought for £550 including the flatbed delivery to the door as a non-starter I assumed it was going to have a horrendous amount of issues and problems and probably cost about another £1000 to put right.

Surprisingly, the underside of the car is practically perfect other than obvious corrosion in general places like arms and things that can be wire brushed - there was no rot, not real damage to the chassis itself, and very VERY little actual rust to speak of. There is some bubble-rust on the back drivers arch, but that\'s about all to be honest - it has a completely intact floor, score!

So far I\'ve come to realise that the jacking points are completely toast, buckle before the suspension starts to lift, so those need cutting out and replacing, which is the first bit of welding work to be done, but I\'m severely hoping that that\'s all the welding work that will actually need doing. The inside is in okay condition - the back seats and carpets are in great condition, the head-lining looks like it only went on yesterday, and it had Corbeau Forza reclining adjustable buckets in when I bought it, which to be fair need a bit of a refurb - I\'m probably going to take them to a specialist re-fitter and have them covered in the closest material I can find to the original seats so they look a lot more in-keeping with the cars interior.

Having dismantled a bunch of things over time to get to various bits and pieces (having the fairly (possibly extremely?) rare red leatherette interior) i\'ve discovered that at least half of the cars interior pieces have actually been sprayed some REALLY crappy gloss black spraypaint that\'s REALLY difficult to get back off again, but it\'s coming off slowly, it\'s just an agonizing task.

Here\'s a before and after;

So those sorts of things are getting done very slowly when I can handle being around paint stripper long enough to actually make a dent, which is a daunting task when this is the pile of stuff I have that still needs stripping off, and this isn\'t all of it either, this is just what I;ve pulled out so far, with more still needing to come out.....

Yes, all of that should be red, and when I\'m finished, it will be, and I\'ll have died from inhalation driving around in a car that\'s made of plastic and paint stripper! :rollin

Thanks to Brett I\'ve managed to get replacements for most of the little bits inside the cabin that have been damaged over time, as well as replacement door cards in Grey, not sure if I prefer the current black-on-red cards or the gray-on-red yet, but will see! And also a replacement rear bumper, as mine\'s for some reason severely melted around the drivers side can, wonder how that happened... :evillaugh lol

(still on the hunt for OEM red door cards if anybody has any of those, I really want to restore the original interior back to standard)

Anyway, moving along.

Since then we\'ve sorted out the reason it didn\'t run (was flooded) and also discovered that my EGI (not sure if it\'s the same for all EGI\'s) doesn\'t actually have the \'foot-to-the-floor\' fuel cut off circuit when you start the car, so the first time we started it with that method, we were just constantly re-flooding it over and over - clever! :rollin

Anyway that\'s all sorted now, still a bit funny about starting without some fiddling about with the EGI fuse and sometimes needing two people to start it, so going to wire in a manual fuel-cut circuit on a switch so I can do both the cranking and the job of taking the EGI fuse out of action and popping it back in at the right time from the drivers seat without lifting the bonnet and going through all the fuss and hassle.

Also since then we\'ve discovered that the exhaust blows quite badly, originally we thought it was because the split air feed pipe to the CAT (yes it still has one....for now) wasn\'t bolted onto the rest of the exhaust system, so after re-attaching that and finding out that it\'s still blowing, we found a nice, rather large hold in the exhaust header system behind the cat where (I assume) a pipe from the passenger side merged into the main bulk of the exhaust where rust has eaten through, the metal there is extremely thin so I\'m guessing it\'s heat shielding and the pipe underneath it went first then blasted the crap out of the heat shielding until it gave up the ghost.

Also in addition it was suffering a severe case of flappy-gearstick syndrome where it was missing practically EVERYTHING under the leather cowling of the shifter stick itself so nothing was keeping the ball joint of the gearstick from knocking about aimlessly which is also now fixed having been lucky enough to get some gearstick washer bushing things from the awesomely generous Mitch. So that\'s one more problem ticked off the list and closer to driveable. Also got rid of that HORRIBLE chrome gear knob handle for the (slightly worse for where) OEM standard leather one courtesy of Prof\'s box \'o spare stuff.

And the final problem are the god awful wheels - not only are they from a Mitsubishi FTO (On a Mazda? Why? WHY?!) but the tyres on them were got awful, no two are the same and they\'re badly perished all the way around. So, again courtesy of Mitch, two of the wheels are now replaced with OEM T-II Coupe wheels (minus centre caps for now), and the front ones have been swapped about so that of the 4 FTO wheels it\'s wearing the ones that have the closest possible to legal rubber on.

That\'s about where things stand so far!

It;s running, mostly repaired, and apart from the blowing exhaust is roadworthy, just needs sorting a bit more before the MOT in October and \'should\' be finished for now!

Peripheral port time? ^_^

You\'ve been a busy lad mate. Good to see that your putting time and effort into getting an egi back on road. Large thumbs up from me...

Lass not Lad :p but thanks!

Also thank you very much to pdtaylor for the bits I got today in the post!! Which include the original orange side indicator covers which I\'ll put on when the car\'s resprayed, and thank you also for the battery bracket! Was in need of one before it gets driven!

Also thank you for the gearstick bushings!! Now I even have spares! :D

Now all I really need for the engine bay are the bolt-down pins that go with the battery cover, thank you for looking for them Pete, even if you didn\'t find them :) I appreciate it! :D

Ooooh, wicked! Would love them! Any chance there\'s good rubber on them? :Laugh

Lol, but no I;d love to give them a good home :) I have a pair of EGI ones already I was going to refurb and spray a funky colour and have slicks put on, so looking for either 2 more or a set of TII\'s that match. The TII ones I have are the Coupe ones, apparently the Cabriolet TII wheels are 15\'s not 16\'s and are a different BBS style pattern? Not sure if that makes a difference or not! But if it\'s a set then can\'t go wrong :D lol

Quote from: BenRX;760515Apologies, typed out of habit :Hammer

No worries :) I thought my avatar gave it away? :p lol

Quote from: 1990_fc3s_t2;760516Also got an egi gearknob in mint condition (doesnt fit the t2)

Oh really? The TII one from Prof\'s Cab fit\'s my EGI just fine! I\'d hapily have whatevers going though! :Laugh

So the answer is yes to all of the above minus the EGI wheels, got some already ^_^ thank you!

Yorkshire\'s a bit of a trek though! You coming to anything show-wise upcoming?

Also another thing I;m on the hunt for is a replacement OEM spoiler (TII or EGI doesn\'t matter to me) since mine\'s obviously been used in an attempt to open the boot a few times in the past! >_>

Mine are coupe 16" meshies with centre caps not sure on the tyres though I know they are few years old at least.
Got a spoiler but its in red you can have too.
I\'ve never been to a show yet so im desperate to get to one soon now the cars running, sadly can\'t make japfest but whatever\'s coming up after that I\'m gonna do my best to get to. :)

Sounds good to me, thank you! :D

Since I\'m picking up so much from you I;d be happy to compensate you for so much stuff :)

Red spoiler doesn\'t matter to me as I;m planning on having the whole thing resprayed white when I can afford anyway, so the colour things are really makes no difference! :Laugh

I will hopefully) be at rotorstock in the EGI if all goes well!! So could pick everything up from you then maybe? :)

If not I can look into courier costs or how much it is to drive there and back. :)

Yeah that\'s fine If you don\'t mind waiting till rotorstock I\'ll bring it all then otherwise a courier would be best as it\'s a long drive, my mum lives near Chichester in Sussex and that takes me 5-6 hours if the traffics bad. I hate the m25 with a passion it\'s seems to be always gridlocked when I\'m on it. :Grrr

Good work, Bonkers Girl :Giggle Nice to see someone putting so much effort into "only" an EGI, won\'t be long before they\'ve all gone back to the soil and we\'ll all be wondering why no-one saved any when we had the chance.

If it\'s any help, I\'m just down the road from Chichester (as is Brett, for that matter). Sure if you need anything collecting we could sort simething out. :Thumbs-up

I know exactly what you mean, what with my arsed up knee I can\'t handle driving in stop-start traffic anymore as it dramatically reduces how long I can be in the car before it gets too much for my knee, so I don\'t drive far whenever I can help it. My parents and back in Fareham is bad enough and that\'s just an hour away!

Oh I know it\'s \'only\' an EGI, still works fine for me! No real reason not to turbo it or supercharge it in the future! :p lol

But thanks! Just trying to get it as much back to stock as possible at the moment more than anything else, especially things like the currently black interior which REALLY annoys me, why do people have to spraypaint rare interiors naff colours and do such a tacky job of it?! :Grrr if your gonna spray an interior a different colour at least TRY and make it look like it\'s meant to be that colour!

What d\'ya mean picking stuff up? Yorkshires miiiiiiiiiiiiiles away!

I didn\'t mean "only" an EGI as a derrogatory thing, I mean it\'s good to see that you don\'t think of it in that way and reckon it\'s worth rescuing. Too many people see a 500 quid car as a long MOT to be weighed in when it expires, not a car worth restoring to former glories.

From what I inferred from what Mr 1990 fc3s t2 was saying, the stuff you want from him is at his parent\'s place in Chi which is why he wouldn\'t be able to get it to you before Rotorstock. On account of being in the aforementioned Yorkshire. Which, as you say, is miles away. Maybe I\'m wrong? That happens :Giggle

Haha, nah I don\'t have the attitude of \'just\' an EGI, I just see it as untapped potential. It\'s a rotary, it\'s a 13b, it\'s good for like 900hp if I want to throw enough cash at it. What 1.3l piston engine can say that even with stupid money with the exclusion of stupidly powerful bikes? :Giggle

Besides, top end HP on an NA is around the 300 mark, not half bad for an NA considering its 100 more than the stock T-II! Gotta love extreme porting <3

Ahhhh I;m with ya now, sure, if Mr 1990 wants to dump stuff off at his parents in Chi when he\'s next down I;d gladly arrange some kinda pickup from there. :) Sure something can be arranged if lugging everything to Rotorstock is inconvenient :)

It might be easier for me to drop the stuff off cos I\'m not sure I\'d get the spoiler in with the wheels! I don\'t know when I\'ll next be going though cos she\'s coming up north this month sometime but saying that I don\'t think she\'d be up for putting the wheels in her car, she\'s got one of them new jags "x something!"
I could always give her the spoiler and if someone wants to collect it she lives just off the a27 in slindon then I could bring the wheels with me to rotorstock unless there\'s anything on sooner. :D

Any idea what the rubber\'s like on the set of TII rims? Reckon it would be safe to drive around on? Just summing up how soon I need to factor in wrapping in new tyres for the rex to be decent enough on the road to go driving around with. :)

Hi Lacey,
Yours is looking really nice there, was driving a customer EGI today and forgot how good they are.
Is that an ally bonnet from a Cabriolet Lacey?
There is a real resurgance of the 2nd gens now, especially with JDM imports.
They are re-growing on me too!
Regards
Carl

Hehe thanks! Still wayyyyyyyyy far from finished or even anywhere near how I want it, planning on restoring the entire red interior to it\'s former glory and having it fully sprayed white, to give the delicious white / red contrast I\'ve always loved.

And nah it\'s the standard coupe steel one, so weighs about 3 times what the rest of the chassis does! lol

Just trying to get mine tidied up and fairly close to stock as possible for now, get everything back the way it should be before I start fiddling around with anything power wise.

After that it\'s porting time!

I know two tyres are good for MOT but the two steerers are quite feathered on the edge from what i remember.
Let me know if you need anything else, ive got bits of egi everywhere, rotor an eccentric shaft on the kitchen windowsill shed full to the roof with body parts, fuel tank, exhaust (t2 catback) and my garage has the engine in bits with shiney housings taking centre stage!  :p

What\'s the next show in your diary? Im sure we can sort something out before rotorstock in august. :Thumbs-up

Next show I\'m definitely going to is Rotorstock, not planning on going to anything sooner this year, lack of funds, and I\'m antisocial like that. :p Nah but seriously, I wasn\'t planning on going to anything much or major until Rotorstock, if you go to something not too far you could always pop over before/after for a bit of compensatory money and a brew, possibly a bit of cake as well?

2 tyres being MOT worth should be fine, got 2x TII rims on there already with legal rubber, 2 more would be good :D

Parts I\'m actually desperately looking for (but aren\'t essential right now) are;

EGI front half of exhaust in header, everything between the engine and the cat, mines going to fail the MOT for blowing epically badly.

Possibly drivers side door, mines been levered around to get broken into and I\'m not sure how much it\'ll be to replace.

Drivers and passengers side door trims.

Spoiler (already mentioned).

Dont suppose you have a full set of barrels? i.e. both doors, boot, glovebox and ignition with keys? Highly doubt it but worth an ask! lol

Any chance you have some red interior parts? Another long shot but worth an ask.

Already got a nice aftermarket stainless catback with two nice big cans on that burble quite nicely. Incredibly loud if I do say so!

Possibly a not burnt out sunroof motor.

Erm... Those are all the obvious things that spring to mind that could actually do with being replaced at some point in the not too distant future

Aside from that stuff I can think of I\'ll basically I\'ll have anything that\'s going lol! I\'m cheap like that lol

Most important things I WANT to replace for MOT purposes is the cat-engine exhaust piece (must be EGI not TII) and 2 more wheels with legal rubber. The rest is less important to me currently as it isn\'t impacting the safety or legality of the car.

Feel free to PM me or contact me however / whenever if you think you\'re going to be around, I purposely don\'t have much of a life so I\'m hardly ever doing much ^_^

Edit:

Oh, and flash-to-pass lenses are something I don\'t have, also I\'m on the lookout for j-spec S5 rear light clusters (pair), the circular lights rather than the standard uk-spec segmented ones, same as the ones on the Cab\'s. :)

Er, I mean UK spec S5 rear lights (round ones) since the jspec ones are longer and wont fit my back plate, unless its a full jspec rear lights and central midsection as well.

Tis a small world! peter wolds lives just a few miles away from me in hornsea.

Was thinking about your exhaust needs and maybe someone has a set of headers they no longer need or rx7club for sale section always has some interesting stuff...seem to be alot more egi\'s and red interior\'s in the us of a.

Can\'t help with the lights im afraid but do have spare ftp lenses, not great condition, the glossy laquer has peeled off but they are restorable if thats a word!!

I have a good door but 90% sure it\'s the passenger side, i\'ll check.

I could have helped you with the locks but my gf asked (made me!) to remove the scrap from the driveway! sadly went with the ignition and boot locks, amongst other stuff that i should have saved.

So i\'ll be able to get the spoiler, gear knob, ftp lenses to my mums by the end of the month then i\'ll be able to fit the wheels in with me for r8 in august. :)

hehe i\'ve no life either and lovin it! just been lazin around watching some classic f1 races on bbc red button, qualifying next! :cool

Regional meeting would be cool, somewhere mid-way for everybody! :D Not sure when / if I can come at the minute, kind of in and out of the house lately and once the insurance on the civics up at the end of the month I\'m without a car until it\'s sold and pays the insurance on the RX!

No worries on the bits you don\'t have, just thought I\'d mention on the off-chance ^_^

Arse on the locks, but oh well, once again worth a shot! Trying not to buy a brand new set of all 4 as I think I;ll have a heart attack at the quote!!

Thanks for checking on the door :)

Oh! If it\'s a passenger side EGI door, can I maybe pretty please steal the side trim from it? My drivers door needs replacing, and my passenger door is fine but has no trim on, so lets in the rain through the holes! Rubbish! lol

Thanks for the bits and pieces you have got though, I really appreciate it!! :D

If the wheels are a problem and you only want to make one trip, just bring the two that are in better condition, and I\'ll pick the other two up from you at RS8, if there\'s room for the spoiler, 2 wheels, 4 center caps and bits & bobs? :)

Thank you so much for your hunting! What\'s your ale of choice? ^_^

Forgot to mention the door trims in my last post, again i\'ll have to check but i think one is in quite bad condition with rust bubbling under the plastic.

My mums driving up next weekend so i\'ll get the two good wheels all four trims, gear knob, spoiler and window trim if it\'s the good one couriered back with her that\'ll be easier than fitting four wheels in the rex! plus you get the bits you need sooner. :)

Don\'t worry about gettting me anything, it\'s reward enough knowing i can help another rex especially a lady fc owner! :InLove

Don\'t worry about gettting me anything, it\'s reward enough knowing i can help another rex especially a lady fc owner! :InLove

Hehe thank you! But I;d still like you to get something out of it, other than seeing a rex at RS8 that\'s about 10 different shades of gray, with black and red body parts. :rollin

What window trim? Did I ask for something I;ve forgotten about? It\'s the strip down the side of the door I;m lacking one of :D

That bit, also this is the reason I;m probably looking to replace the drivers door.

Oh and the trim on that door sucks too >_>

Where abouts are your parents? PM me an address if you don\'t want to mention it publicly, just so I can gauge how much fuel I need, will come in the Civic before it\'s off the road at the end of the month, which has no pass seat so I can fit me chair in it, will be plenty big enough! After all I managed to fit a whole bumper, 2 wheels, a sunroof, and 3 boxes of stuff, along with an assortment of \'stuff\' in it on the way back from Brett\'s, without even opening the boot! ^_^

Oh I thought you were talking about the window trim! Yeah do have the door trim piece, I\'ll do my best to remove it without breaking it.

If that\'s the only damage on the door it might be worth fixing it. One of my spare doors is rotten along the bottom where the two or three skins meet, the seam is totally gone, was quoted £200 to fix a few years ago. If yours isnt rusty may be worthwhile gettin the filler out.

I\'ll pm you the addy. :)

It looks like the door is from a completely different car, but yeah the trim I was looking for is the actual long strip that clips into the side of the passengers door. Not sure if drivers / passengers door trims are different or if they\'re both exactly the same, but the T-II ones are slightly different on each side from what I remember, but to be fair with the state of the drivers door one peeling off, replacing both would probably be an idea :)

That\'s all that seems wrong with the door, just seems like a lot of work working out the massive bent bit in the side and all the tiny little chips and dents and stuff all the way down the side, but will see what I can do about it :)

Some pics...
problem with the tyres, the two good ones are different sizes, one is 225 50 16 and the other is 205 50 16.

I have some of those FTP lenses you can have. I never run my car with them in, but they don\'t have the fitting bolt/screw/nut things, because they broke.

Thanks for digging the stuff out for me, I appreciate it! Doesn\'t bother me much about the tyre difference, will just put them on the front and should be fine.

Condition of the FTP lenses doesn\'t bother me either since mine doesn\'t actually have any, obviously the nicer condition the better, but I;m not one to be picky when it\'s something I don\'t even have to begin with :)

The tyre sizes make a big difference - you\'ll have to replace one of them, to match the other. You cannot run a 225 on one side, and a 205 on the other! Firstly it\'s illegal (you cannot have mis-matched tyre sizes on the same axle), and secondly it\'s a massive difference, so the car would pull sideways!

Arse, well there goes my hopes of having 2x more T-II rims to put legal and safe rubber on the car >.<

Guess I\'ll have to just have the pair from the front that are slightly feathered from steering then and use them for the same purpose. :/

Sorry to mess you about 1990, didn\'t know it was illegal to have slightly mismatched tyre sizes T_T what a pain in the backside, thought that would have been a good solution then. >.<

Do you want my address papercutout? How much will the postage be do you think? :)

Don\'t worry about it, Think your gonna have to get a new tyre either way as the other 225 is all cracked and flat and the other 205 has quite bad shoulder wear.
Here\'s the other tyres,

Just another update!

Done more work on the EGI today with mucho helpo from Prof.

Both my popups now actually work, and are reliable, to begin with you had to lift the pass side one up by hand every time. We took the light out, dismantled the winder motor to find that the plastic gear inside has basically been eaten by the motor, thankfully prof had a spare in the garage (which had a duff switch/motor, I can\'t remember) so we Frankenstein\'d up a working one out of 2 deceased ones, reinstalled (and after much swearing at the thing whilst trying to find the right resting positions for the contacts) got it to actually start working properly, instead of spin around in circles.

That was the main fix for today.

Second was my flappy accelerator peddle, apparently the throttle cable is supposed to have some kind of bar or piece of tube at the end of it by the accelerator peddle that keeps the accelerator half-depressed (insert joke here), one of the previous owners had cut it off to lift the accelerator up, so the resting position was level with the other 2 pedals which, having looked in profs, it\'s not supposed to be - it\'s SUPPOSED to be pushed in further than the clutch and brake, so that\'s at least partially / temporarily fixed with a bit of reinforced rubber hose, and the accelerator sits with far less give before the throttle engages. It\'s not perfect, but it\'s 2/3 closer to how it should be, so a lot better.

Third was the fuel cap being a pain in the backside, having to wedge the lever up then go open it manually, after greasing the nipple (hurr hurr) that pins the filler door shut, and greasing the hinge on the filler door, that now works perfectly fine as well, after some percussive maintenance to get the latch to sit in the right place.

All in all a productive afternoon :)

Also a P.S. for 1990, if you prefer the EGI steering wheel, I have a spare you can put in your T-II if you like? :p

Don\'t worry, I don\'t charge for any advice I give, and you certainly can\'t post it! :p

(I assume you mean for 2x FTP lenses?)

Round here there\'s a company that does part worns at about £20 each, and fitting/balancing/disposal of old tyre for £10 each, so that\'d be £60 for a pair of part worns fitted - which is mega cheap compared to buying new. Only relevant if you\'ve got very little money though!

Ps. It\'s frigging annoying that the accelerator sits lower IMO, it means I can\'t heel-toe. Did you and Dave notice if there was a way of having it return to level with the other pedals, without being flappy?

Got the wheels on the car finally, mismatched set though! Turns out the wheels I got from Mitch (back) are completely standard look just a bit dirty, but the wheels I got from 1990 (fronts) have been sandblasted, polished down, painted and lacquered during a refurb at some point, so the wheels I got gratefully received from Mr 1990 will be the donor wheels for the paint job, sanded back, properly refurbed back to delicious original shape (slightly curbed in places) and painted a high gloss white with silver (maybe red) flake and red accents (wheels nuts on centre cap sprayed metallic red for example)

If it is, I want it please! LOL!!

Other than the wheels, I have a full set coming from mitch all with really good Eagle F1\'s with hardly any mileage on, so they\'ll be going on it and the current lot will be coming off, over time (when i can be arsed) I\'ll refurb, sand back and paint the other set.

Before it goes back on the road I want to give the thing a fair overhaul just to ensure the safety of it. Before it actually gets driven properly I intend on - replacing all the brake line with braided, do a caliper rebuild on both fronts and backs, along with a full caliper refurb and paint, and will put on the new wheels all with good tyres when they\'ve come.

Also not sure whether to stick with the standard EGI lights or swap out for Turbo-II lights, I kind of like the EGI lights since nobody really has them, but mine are in completely appalling condition and really do need to be replaced at some point. They work, they just look hideous where the black plastic surround has been somehow murdered in a way I just can\'t describe better than being a cat\'s scratching post.

Aside from still being in desperate need of a (preferably inexpensive) EGI exhaust header to CAT pipe, and possibly swapping over the injectors for reconditioned ones, the car is roadworthy! Just in a bit of a sorry state, still working my way through the interior piece by piece to de-paint all of that, and have a new mint sunroof to finish painting and install once the weathers not so naff. :Laugh

I will ask my mum about the door strip but I\'ve been out of there 3 months so it\'s likely that it hasn\'t survived the \'mums garage purge!\' I imagine she was in there the day I left clearing all my unwanted (by her) stuff out!!

As far as the rear lights go the egi ones often can be had for cheap. Someone was breaking an egi on eBay other day, not sure if lights were there though. TII lights look better but are rarer/more expensive so it depends on what your budgeting!

I\'m sure whatever the case people will help :)

Keep the EGi lights, as you said, it\'s a bit different. Either pick up a new set, or take your time and smooth them off - work your way through the grades of sandpaper to remove all scratches/writing. Using a block so you keep it the right shape of course!

You could then tint them, and they\'d look even better!

I know what you mean, every time I get in the car I take a look around at just how many more spraypainted black bits there are that I didn\'t notice last time, it\'s like a downward spiral, i swear after this I don\'t ever want to see a can of black spraypaint again!!

Oh I already have T-II lights and I do like them quite a bit, but I also like the EGI lights just mine are in terrible condition and just generally look tacky. I havn\'t seen EGI lights up for sale before so in all likelihod I\'ll be putting the T-II lights on at least as long as it takes to source EGI ones that arent screwed up condition wise, and by then they might grow on me even more than they already have. Mainly I just like them because they\'re a bit different to the norm.

LOL that\'s exactly what I thought, both lights are like that across every inch of black plastic on them, there is no normal smooth bits on those lights whatsoever, lol! So I have no idea what in the hell happened to them to cause such an extensive amount of damage!

Hehe that was prof\'s suggestion too, might be going with that but ideally i\'d like a spare set of EGI lights to refurb off the car to do a straight swap, so that theres no gaping holes on the back of the car for the dreaded wetness to creep in!

Well as of today I have a fully functioning completely working new set of locks, including swapping over the steering column with the attached other lock which turned out to be far more of an arse than I thought it would. I was prepared for it to be so annoying, I would have just preferred it if it had been nice and easy! But, the car claimed more chunks of my hands in the process but it\'s all done and finished now, all that\'s left to do after the change over is reassemble the steering wheel cowling which I;m holding off on, because the little bulb that illuminates the ignition key socket is blown, so may as well replace that before I reassemble everything once more, saves taking it apart again to do yet another job!

But yes, 3 full new locks (both doors and ignition) now fully functional, and my car can no longer be unlocked using a screwdriver! It\'s actually locked now - properly! :D

Chuffed! :D

Glove box and boot are still on the original key though, which suits me nicely :)

It only looked like bubble rust, so I got out the sander ready to sand it back to metal, properly rust treat it, lay filler over that, sand smooth, prime and resprat the arch.

Buuuuttttt it\'s not that simple, once I got under the 10 acres of body filler already there it was so full of holes that it just fell apart without the body filler there, so I got out the dremel and attacked as much of the rust as I could before I overheated in the sun and came indoors.

Considering it only \'looked\' like bubble rust, and I didnt even get all of it, that\'s a lotta rust... :/

After getting a bit fed-up with the rust siatuation being about 500% worse than it looked I came inside and decided to do a bit more polishing on my replacement UIM.

Some new parts have arrived with a big thank you to the lovely M1tch!

I not how a rather tasty looking pair of front and rear strut braces, along with some rather funky after-market lowering springs as well, which (I think anyway) will be a 40mm drop.

Will hopefully if the weather cools down (so I don\'t die mid-procedure) get the suspension installed at some point this week with before & after shots of the car on standard suspension with standard wheels, after-market drop on standard wheels, and then (providing everything fits and I don\'t need spacers that I then have to order as well) the combination of the drop springs on my still-to-arrive delicious 18" wheels from the lovely Mr Bellamy :)

Truly envious!! lol. I have no rust anywhere (thankfully as being imported from Japan after 2003) so was able to miss out on the unfortunate weather we have here in the UK ;) The only rust i do have, however, is the boot lid but this is getting replaced by the guys at AtomicRex courtesy of Marco when he is able to get back to me :)

Did some more work today!

Managed to fully dismantle most of the front suspension set-up and drop it all down enough to free the suspension from the body, in order to fit new springs to the existing shocks. The old springs were looking fairly tired and the new ones were meant to be lowering springs that I got from Mitch, who got them originally from Pete Taylor, although at the moment, it seems to have made absolutely no difference whatsoever XD

After loads of faffing about, swearing and beating the crap out of the thing, it only took 90 minutes to replace the spring on the drivers side!

Then, now that we knew how to actually do it, it took about 10 minutes to do the passengers side.... >_>

Still have the rears to do but that\'s a job for tomorrow morning. Pics are as follows with before & after\'s.

Note the spring thickness, the new ones will be stiffer than the old ones. Also the ride height will settle a little - and it\'s my guess you took the 2nd photo after lowering the car, but that\'s irrelevant, because the car needs to be driven backwards and forwards for the springs to (again) settle into place.

As soon as you move the car it\'ll look different! Good work though, it\'s a pain in the arse isn\'t it, learning new jobs on cars?!
Title: \'89 EGI \'it\' - Work in Progress
Post by: Lacey on August 14, 2011, 01:55:52 AM
I\'m sure it\'ll settle down a bit eventually, probly won\'t get much lower though, which will be good for when I fit the 18\'s eventually, for now I\'ve got a set of original T-II rims with proper, legal rubber around all 4 tyres, so at least the tyres will pass an MOT now at least, fingers crossed on the rest.

Still got the rear suspension to do tomorrow morning.

And yeah it\'s amazing fun, drivers side took way over 90 mins to do, figuring out the best way to actually do it, start to finish passenger side took 10 - 15 minutes to drop, compress the spring, swap the springs, and completely re-assemble. Just hoping it\'s as easy to do on the rears as it was on the fronts.

Also tomorrow since the suspension on the front of the car will have settled a bit more - the strut brace goes on! Couldn\'t be arsed to do it last night, was tired and my legs were really hurting from shifting about on the floor a lot. Havn\'t got that greasy for ages!

Didn\'t get the back suspension done today, was far too exhausted, but got the back wheels swapped over for some other OEM T-II ones so the car has legal rubber all around now, one less thing for it to fail the MOT with!

Also got my Cusco front strut brace on too. :)

Quote from: B.Martin;782179Will look much better lowered! That is also a very nice brace you\'ve got there! So how long until you put \'it\' back on the road?

That IS lowered, that\'s what it looks like with the lowering springs on (at the front at least), so somehow I don\'t think the rears will be any different either, which is kind of a shame since I was hoping there would be more of a drop on the front than the rear, since the rears are already kinda low anyway.

And I don\'t know, as long as a piece of string, civic is off down the body shop a week yesterday to have some repair work done (scratches on the back bumper sorted and sprayed, and front wing professionally resprayed since my attempt was crap) and then it will be back ready to go up for sale. Wanted to get stuff sorted since unless I was in desperate need to be rid of it, I wouldn\'t sell a car I own in any kind of state / condition I wouldn\'t buy it in.

Once it\'s back and back to near-mint again it\'ll be going up for 2650ono

And yeah! I likes me Cusco brace! Thank you Mitch! Now I owe you money XP
