Title: titanium exhaust?
Post by: brodierx7 on May 05, 2011, 10:29:43 PM
My rex currently has a stock downpipe then a stright through de-cat and then a blitz nurspec cat back :) but l have the chance to get a titanium cat back to replace the blitz nurspec. will the titanium make much differance in sound to the stainless catback? is it realy worth spending £300 for a ti catback to raplace my stainless steel?

Depends on what you want but to generalize Stainless tends to resonate more as it gets hot compared to mild or Ti so can be louder. Mild a bit quieter but of course will corrode quicker unless treated. I have a Ti cat back and apart from it never seeming to age it gives a lower tone to the exhaust and of course is less than half the weight of an equivalent SS system.

Mines a Magnaflow Ti with 4" pipe and 4.5" tail and is loud without the baffle in place. Should be quieter on your RX with a turbo though (I have an NA engine)

Hi- I took my titanium back box off and replaced with a Blitz Nurspec, the sound was similar, the Titanium was a slightly sharper/crisp sound

I have it for sale, but has a large scuff/dent

Titanium sounds slightly brassy but not necessarily any louder or quieter than any other material, that\'s more dependant on the silencing than the material it\'s made from. I paid £500 or so for my titanium exhaust three years ago, but that is for a full system including a silenced decat midpipe, all 100% titanium. Some "titanium" exhausts are made of a titanium backbox but have steel pipework. Not necessarily a problem, but worth being aware of

£300 for a Magnaflow Ti cat back is a good price IMO. I\'ve recently seen one go for £400. They are very well made and mine is all Ti except maybe the hangers which are SS. Mine came with a removeable baffle which makes the car useable for daily driving so check if it has one.

I would guess most Ti exhaust are likely to have dents/scuff/scrathes as the rear pipe hangs quite low. Mine has a dent in the pipe just before the back box but it made no difference on a dyno so I\'ve not touched mine.

I could post a vid but it\'s not like for like as I have an NA engine

I did like it yes, but for me when I started using the car everyday it got a bit much, but then so did the Nurspec....so the problem is more down to lack of silencing in the middle haha

Sounds about right, £300, probably selling mine for £150, considering damages, but pretty sure its all titanium as there are no straps
