Title: Blown diff?
Post by: L18M on May 05, 2011, 09:53:58 PM
Just wondering how do you know if you have a blown diff?

I have a knocking noise coming from the rear of the car, sound like coming from the passenger side. Sounds kinda like a flat tyre thumping away BUT there is only noise when i am not accelerating. If i acc then the noise goes away.

Any ideas?

I checked body parts for loose fittings but everything is tight in place.

Cheers

From the noise you describe I would suggest getting under the car and checking the propshaft bolts are tight ASAP

If its tight twist the prop from side to side to see if theres play in the prop UJ\'s

Hope this helps

thanks for the replies guys and girls.
will jack it up again before i next take it out and check cv joints and propshaft and area.

you will hear the banging/ rattling noise about 20 seconds in.

though i took it for a short spin today and didnt hear it, just heard other rattling noises (spare nuts and bolts rattling around)

and 18 sec into this one

Was the prop unbolted from the diff at any stage? If so, was it replaced at the correct orientation?

it was fine when i picked it up, just the following day it started to make noise.
good excuse to take the diff out and replace the housing as the thread is gone neways..
plus change fuel filter :)

is it hard to take the diff out and the diff case?
i managed to do coilovers today which is very good for me but i failed at unscrewing the 2 screws holding the rear disk in place. even had an impact screw driver thing that i couldnt get to work lol

i had a poke around the rear yesterday and all is tight and tried to wobble the diff about but as its quite heavy it didnt move much so i dont think its the mounts.

Took it out for a cheeky lil spin and no banging / knocking noise.
maybe i had a chicken caught up in the rear some where?

any ideas anyone?

No clue if it\'s suddenly gone away! Maybe being jacked up and having it messed about with seated it back into its rightful position? Maybe it was your suspension instead since you changed it? Or did I read wrong and you didn\'t finish the job on account of the un-moving screws?
