Title: Exhaust systems for N/A
Post by: Kamatari on April 29, 2011, 10:44:30 PM
Just wondering what exhaust systems people go for on their N/A\'s and where they got them from? I know my car has an aftermarket backbox but everything else is standard, Been having a look on ebay and whilst it seems like i could get hold of downpipes and decats, it seems all the manifolds are for turbo models instead!

They do seem quite hard to get in the UK, I have seen a few from the US though:

Might almost be easier to get one custom made with long primaries to get as much power from it as you can :)

Yeah you could locate a \'powerflow\' specialist, they are all over.

I would only go with a rotary specific exhaust company, Racing beat do good exhausts, I think that a \'powerflow\' place would probably look at the manifold and go...what engine is this? :D

How much do you reckon I\'d be looking at for an exhaust system? All I need to get is the manifold, downpipe and straight through pipe and whatever gaskets

infact, going by that link you gave, that manifold is two seperate pipes, i take it i\'d have to get 2-1 pipe or have two seperate exhausts?

Yeah i dont think im going for a custom made system... getting quoted up to 800+

Now to source the parts, are racing beat just in the US? had a look on their site and i think the header is $260 and the presilencer is $260 (or something like that)

Been awhile since i\'ve posted here! havent really done anything to my rx7 apart from a bit of wiring and sorting the rusty wings....

still planning on sorting the exhaust out and everything, just wanting to know what people think...

Theres a place near me that are selling on ebay manifolds for rx7\'s but they say are for a turbo\'d model, i messaged them and asked if they did anything for a N/A but they just said check out http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAZDA-RX7-STAINLESS-STEEL-TURBO-EXHAUST-MANIFOLD-FC3S-/140459453189?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20b4092b05

Which again is for a turbo. Now would i be wrong in thinking that i could just blank whatever is going off to the turbo and use it anyway?

I don\'t think you need an aftermarket manifold on a n/a mate, which is probably why your struggling to find one. I think I\'m right it saying you don\'t even need one on the TII unless your upgrading turbo (which obviously your not) I\'ve been looking at the eBay exhausts and they come recommended check out item number 200541854992 I\'m quite sure that will fit your n/a. I emailed them to ask if it fitted the turbo model and \'they couldn\'t guarantee it, so it must be designed for the n/a.

As far as the custom exhausts go, £800 is steep have you tried a powerflow place? I think they\'re usually around £300 so maybe I\'d estimate £500 for a twin system with Y pipe. Unless they have doubled their prices, which in the world we live in isn\'t beyond belief! What year is your n/a? Are you sure it even has a cat?

Hope this helps mate. Been a long time since I owned an n/a and I remember having fun looking for stuff then for good prices.

Ben

aftermarket manifolds are where all the power is on an N/A.

Racing beat is the way to go,  http://www.racingbeat.com/RX7-1986-1992/Exhaust-Headers/16129.html

they\'re not cheap but guaranteed to fit, and fit well. Rotechniks and mazda rotary parts both sell racing beat stuff.

The problem with racing beat is that their pipe lengths tend to be a bit different to stock meaning you generally have to all racing beat parts or a couple of stock bits. I recon getting a header, then getting a decat made up would give you a lot of noticeable power

Failing getting a system from RB, you could also try a place called custom chrome.  They are based in Nuneaton which isn\'t too far from you.  Have a good reputation and have come recommened by a friend who is a professional rally mechanic.  He has had a few systems from there and is happy with their work.

Good luck anyway.

Ben

On both N/A and Turbo the stock manifold are a little restrictive.

I think on the N/A you can go with dual headers, but all the emissions stuff has to come off for that - but good potential for power increase over stock

On a TII, if you\'re keeping the stock turbo, you can get some benefit from running a custom manifold, but the downpipe and exhaust are more critical ( after turbo), as these should be as unrestrictive as possible.

I believe that my car has an aftermarket exhaust and downpipe... Although i won\'t know yet for a few weeks.

But good advice all round here, i\'m sure kamatari will have the answers he needs now.

Cheers for all the replies everyone! just checking the links out now

My car is a UK \'89, i dont think they have cat\'s but just the two thermal chambers (i think its two), The people who had the car before me has had a custom backbox made up by mij a few years a go so just need all the piping up to that really, I was planning on removing all the emissions stuff aswell

So i would need to get a manifold, down pipe and mid pipe and thats everything yeah?

IMHO you may as well get a full system, easier, cheaper, better for fitting. No messing about welding pipes together etc. Plus with a full system, you\'ll have all you need minus the de-cat pipe and the manifold. There are also manifolds on ebay, however they might be turbo ones i can\'t remember.

you wont need a downpipe. The racing beat header is shaped to be very unrestrictive and finishes under the car where you would expect a downpipe to finish.  You\'d need (i think) The header and a custom mid pipe. Or the header and pre silencer. Not sure if the latter would be a direct fit. Getting a single pipe made up would probably be cheaper than the racing beat item

if you the bin the cat\'s/thermal reactors/air pump you\'ll need to find a freidnly mot tester.

I\'ve never removed the emissions stuff myself, but people generally to run into problems with it etc. Deffo worth it though

On a pre \'90 car i thought there was no emissions test?

Have u tried MIJ in Birmingham? I got my cat back twins large back box from them for 360. As for the header I suggest u go to with a famous brand for good power. As the header is important on NA as it is very dependent on the pressure wave in the exhaust system to get all the exhaust gas out of chamber. Different length of the separate part will creat different effect on different rev

i think its pre 95 don\'t need cats.

I\'ve had a number of cars fail on emissions (pre 90). I think there is a different test, though they still definately get tested.

Interesting, i was lead to believe that there wasn\'t an emissions test on the older cars as they were manufactured before all this eco freindly bull sh!t.

Yep you definately still get emissions tested.  Mine failed last week by a country mile.  Fortunately just before I started trying to sort emissions out the MOT tester turned friendly and my car flew through ;)

Yeah, there is a test when emissions aren\'t tested, I believe its before 1974, mines a 91, the CO % max is like 3%, my turbo II is curently decatted and is at 0.18% :)

i know my mx5 is an 89 and thats emissions tested although decatted it ended up lower than when it had the cat on lol

So my best option is going to be importing a racing beat header and then a mid pipe, just a shame i cant find anything in the uk to save on shipping it over etc... As for trying MIJ in birmingham, the car has already had a twin catback exhaust made up by them already which is why im after everything but that :)

If i brought a decat off ebay would that solve the need of needing a midpipe/presilencer?

Give Mazda Rotary Parts or Rotechniks a call. They\'re both racing beat suppliers in the uk.

If you speak to rotechniks they really really know there stuff when in comes to racing beat products, they may have something sitting on the shelf you can use

Bringing up a slightly old thread and still looking at exhausts

from racing beat i could get their streetable header and presilencer for around $600 or i could just get the cat replacement pipe (downpipe) and presilencer for about $400

both of these options would eliminate the thermal chambers and cat (well the stock one anyway) but what differences would i notice by getting the header compared to just the downpipe?

Also would each option require all the air pump stuff removed or could i leave it all in place?

If you have the OEM EGI header going spare I will take it, I know someone who needs one :)
