Post by: cribbohx on April 29, 2011, 10:32:23 PM
Hi all. Hoping to join the fold soon. Took a test drive in a cracking Red 1988 FC today. Incredible power for a non turbo and the car is virtually mint. Very well looked after with 60k on the clock. Well maintained and exceptionally clean. A nice burbling Janspeed too (tho\' not s/s).

Paying £1500 which seems quite good to me. Collecting in about 2 weeks, I can\'t wait till she\'s mine!

Strange, series 4 with a non-standard Mazda badge! Far as I know they didn\'t use that badge when they made that car. Either way that thing is effin\' MINT!!! Hopefully you\'ve got yourself a gem!!! Always remember to keep your eye on the underside, but from the looks of it you don\'t have the slightest bit of rust anywhere! Congrats! :)

And keep an eye in the oil level, regually change it and maintain it. As Lacey says Might be an idea to get it under sealed if it\'s not already been done? Other than that it really does look a real pearler!

Any plans for it?

Cheers guys... yep had those words of wisdom from the VERY attentive previous owner. Has been frequently waxoiled (& a summer driver only) but we\'ll be checking her over anyway.

Drives like a dream......tho\' the very light steering is bonkers!

If it has light steering check the power steering fluid, I found mine went light when the PS cooler leaked and there wasn\'t much fluid left in the system

Probobly a good idea to keep it standard as good straight ones are getting rear now you can always get an after market exaust and intake to give it a bit more poke, whats it like underneath if there is no rust it might pay to get it wax oiled to keep it that way.
Cheers

will be checking the undercarriage but was waxoiled frequently by the previous owner. Got a Janspeed on it at the mo\' - not s/s tho\' except the back boxes.

Plan to keep it pretty straight but the sound system is Sh. so need to do something there...

Numberplate surround and mazda badge on the front bumper? That\'s all I notice with a LOT of drink inside me. But, heck, it\'s surprising I can even type coherently...! (lost count of drinks several hours ago!)

Just don\'t go on Ebay after/during drinking. It doesn\'t work out and can get expensive!

Good call re the badge.We\'ll try to remove the front badge. Hoping it is a stick on variety and will reveal no holes. Needs a new MAZDA sticker on the front as the original has faded a bit.

Re: the back number plate surround.... might lose it.

As Lacey mentioned the badge is probably aftermarket addition by previous owners I\'m not sure the fc came with that Mazda badge at all, so should be stick on. Roll out the hair dryer, nectar card, White spirit and t-cut!

Post by: cribbohx on May 08, 2011, 12:11:40 PM
Just got the badge off, it was a stick on badge and you could tell because they used that cloudy elasticated glue (can\'t remember the name of it). The previous owners didn\'t put it on as he thought it was standard but it looks like it was off of a mazda 626 to me. To get it off I boiled the kettle and poured hot water over it (to soften it the glue) and a old card and it came off in 2 seconds. It looks a lot lot nicer without the badge on it.

Good work that man!

While we\'re on the badge note - does anyone know if the boot badges can be removed easily, or are there some holes left? Just thinking about having it cleaner...

Not sure on this but I \'believe\' theres holes.

Coupe or Cab? If Coupe, just pull back your interior carpeting that unclips around the spare wheel and have a look on the interior panel, should see whether it\'s pinned on or not, but they\'ve been using pin-holed bages for donkeys years now so I\'m going to assume yes?

does anybody know...?  can you get access to the rear glass of the front indicator and main beam/flash lights. They are a bit mottled...I suspect a little grime after a few years of condensation. Would like to "refresh" them...
Title: Coming soon - 1988 FC newbie
Post by: papercutout on May 08, 2011, 10:50:05 PM
Yes. 4 screws to remove the headlight body, then obviously the plug. Pulling the glass off is tricky -there\'re some metal bent tabs. Also might be glued. Make sure you seal them up nicely when you\'ve cleaned it out.

Have just cleaned the rx7 and buffed it up and it looks very nice.
Thanks for the interest it is in lovely condition and I have insured it for £3000 as that is at least what it is worth in my opinion.

I am going to try and keep it as standard as possible as standard fc\'s are rare these days. Might put a k&n air filter on it when I give its next service.

Fair play to you mate, I was told that you can have an extra rotor put on the n/a 13b. I\'m sure it was during a conversation with a guy at WGT. So if you ever get bored you know what to do...

If the rx7 was not as standard and perfect condition I would modify it quite a bit but it is so I will keep the modding to my mx5
