I know this a car forum but not one recent post about the Royal Wedding??
There has been a fair bit of chat re the necessity/need for our royal family over the years on here, well, whatever you think, if you turn on any tv today i think you will see the pull and draw they have, streets lined since yesterday, tourists flooding in and an all round good feeling! Its typically British and that in this day and age is what we should hold on to!
+ we get a day off :Giggle :wiggle
I\'m hoping she\'ll be in a red dress :D

Now that would be fab but if she\'s not in white/cream/ivory I\'ll be eatting my Philip Treacy!
I have to say it\'s lovely to get all the Tweets and Facebook posts from people who are in London - great atmosphere and fingers crossed the rain holds off.
We should have a Royal Family, no question about it!
I\'m well behind the whole affair...and it makes me laugh that the so called haters and people that arent \'bothered\' make more fuss about telling you that they\'re not going to watch it, or that they\'re not bothered.
Without doubt, its a massive, and most importantly, it\'s very special occasion!
The socialists and communists should move to such a country if they so dislike what is a large part of this country and it\'s history!
What day off?

Never a truer word said.
Very British and im loving every bit of it.
Lines and Lines of the Union Flags is a fantastic sight :Thumbsup!
I hate to get all picky but they\'re Union Flags. They\'re only a Union Jack when on the jackstaff of one of Her Majesty\'s Ships.

Oh the powers of moderation :Thumbs-up:Nono!
Would other wrong for there to be a streaker.
Or the queen and Phillips doing the bird dance at the reception

Blasted Android phone its great for looking at sites where your ip has been blocked but not good for typing while operating your digger.
It should say " would it be wrong for there to be a streaker at the wedding"
But yes we need the royal family. Not only for the country but otherwise all those posh buildings would be empty

Yes, Not for the country.... We love our democracy...

Bloody right  Just been driving empty trains about all morning. It\'s like 28 Days Later out there, what a waste of my life :3Confused
I don\'t really give a monkeys whether we have a Royal Family or not, truth be told, but I suppose most of the time they don\'t bother me so I don\'t bother them :Giggle. I guess if you
have to have them, they might as well be decorative and entertaining. Like Queen Kate (or whatever she is now), and Prince Phillip, in that order

Well said.....hahah:)
Not really a fan of the royals, but nice to see all those people out there having a great day !!!
Also a huge shame that Diana was not there for obvious reasons, i found it a little annoying that Camilla was at the forefront.
Agree with that. I think she has no right. But that\'s my opinion
Its only a wedding. my mum was on the bacardi at 8am and she stole the show in our house. we missed most of it. nice day off though fair play. hope it helps our economy more that the tax payers bill.
I enjoyed it! :D No day off though for me! :o

well imo i dont think william could have picked a prettier or smarter woman to marry!
she certainly is a stunner, good on him. I havent been that fussed about watching it but i like the patriotism of it all.
And apparently 2 billion around the world have been watching, that must put us back on the map :)
I\'ll be honest and i dont want to offend, i\'m all for the royal family its a great not many countries have one anymore. However... i\'m really not bothered about all this, i\'m glad i\'m in cyprus and not having to deal with all the coverage and talk about it, and although i\'m not paying tax to a UK government now i have done for the past however many years and i ask myself and you guys? How much money has this \'royal wedding\' cost the tax payer? I for one imagine its a lot and when a country is in debt and 1000\'s of people are unemployed are there not many better ways to use the taxpayers money?
Rant over, but i\'m sure you see where i am coming from.

It will be a huge boost for the economy (maybe more so London, but still), there\'s no doubt about that
If you need to talk about spending money....need we be out bombing several different countries!?
I expect we could have a Royal Wedding every month for what they\'re costing :Hammer
Get your facts right about economics Ben in this case...
The Royal Family paid for the Wedding, the Tax payer paid for the security. The money generated by tourism by the wedding is massive and more then pays for the security cost 5 or 6 times over, so well worth the money spent in my eyes.
More jobs will get generated because of tourism, and a wedding boosts this particular industry.

It may have cost a lot, but have a think at how much it will boost our economy, how much just the millions who traveled to london to see the wedding had spent, on all the tat such as balloons, perascopes, food and drink let alone all the thousands of tourists that will come and spend money in our country and all the memorabilia that will be sold,
In terms of cost/benefit analysis, it\'s a complex one. The cost of policing it and security was probably significant, however the tourism revenue was considerable, also there is a lot of intangible benefits to it as well. We do well out of the Royals and they almost certainly cost the tax payer less than an elected head of state would.

Quote from: wikipedia"Catherine shares ancestors with her husband Prince William; the closest relationship is via William\'s mother through a common descent from Sir Thomas Fairfax and his wife Agnes Gascoine, making the couple fifteenth cousins. She is also related more distantly to William through her father\'s side through common descent from Sir William Gascoine and his wife, née Lady Margaret Percy. The couple are also possibly twelfth cousins once removed, with circumstantial evidence suggesting that they are both descended from Sir Thomas Leighton and Elizabeth Knollys."
I was stuck in work and we look after the link for the BBC to stream to north eastern USA, temptation was there to make the news in the US and loose my job but just stared at this and smiled instead!:

No more than any other bank holiday!
Its a double edged sword mate!
Think of the extra that was spent in places that would normally be quiet on a work day, pubs, off licenses, supermarkets, local shops....the list is endless...
I doubt production was down at all, Britain didnt simply stop on Friday dude, we cope with bank holidays regularly, a few hours overtime here and there will make up for that one day extra in what 20 years?
If you didnt see any pics or news shots of the crowds, i suggest you do before suggesting it didnt boost out economy!
Well I can understand abt economy boost etc etc, but the real question is where that boosted economy\'s return wud b spent!! Not on me or anyone els, it would go the govt coffer and then the MPs would spend it on themselves, so boosted economy through royal wedding is not helping any one!!
Syed
I don\'t want to get into the economic debate but it really does improve our international profile.
Pippa was stunning and her Brother is rather nice too. :mmmm
But I thought these three were beautiful - Diana\'s nieces. Such a shame she wasn’t there yesterday.
I dont want to cause an argument and I\'m sorry if I offended anyone and I agree it boosts the economy and I regret I don\'t know a lot about economics either. I think it would have done great for London, but the uk is bigger than London and I find it hard to believe (as mentioned) that money will be reinvested. I do have 1 question (that I honeslt don\'t know the answer to) and that is... Who pays for the royal family? I mean none of them work and it\'s not like Buckingham palace can generate that much surely? Anyone know?
just makes me chuckle when people say the royal family paid for the wedding. well were do they they their money from... us tax payers. regardless how you look at it. or through what ever coloured lenses you have in.. we paid for it all .
the royal family is too big with too many hangeroners..
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/royal-wedding/8155625/Royal-wedding-marriage-will-cost-economy-5bn.html
Take a look at the above link, costs estimated by CBI.
CBI estimates the wedding will cost the economy £6 billion
CBI estimates the wedding will raise £1 billion.
It has also been the most expensive event ever to police in the history of the UK,a lot of this is due to the police claiming double pay due to the one off bank holiday created for the occasion.
The total security costs will become clear in the next few weeks.
Ben,don\'t worry about upsetting anyone, your entitled to your own point of view in a democracy.

^^^^ good find syebba.

Most expensive security event ever in the UK.
Circa £20 million,we\'ll know in the next few weeks the total bill,no prizes for guessing it\'ll be more than that too.
Well then if that is correct my original rant was correct... The tax payer foots the bill for what is... Put bluntly, someone else\'s wedding.
Now if we take away the royal part and the tourism it might generate over the next year (weather or not that brings in 20million I would be surprised) would anyone be happy paying for someone else\'s wedding?
I guess my conclusion is that yes it\'s raised the uk\'s profile, yes it\'s created a few 100 jobs in London and yes perhaps it will generate some tourism. But... And the big but is, I think that money could have been 100 times better spent in a country in economic turmoil! Simple as.
P.s. I agree, I am entitled to my opinion, but I don\'t like to rub other forum members up the wrong way :)
I sthat her sister in post #31 :InLove? If so, is she out of my league, d\'you think? :rollin
No, I\'m not taking it at all seriously, you\'re right :WaveBye. The UK has the worst debt out of the G20 countries.
Why could\'nt the wedding have been held on a saturday or sunday or on an existing bank holiday to save some money?
Yes i know we\'d of had 1 less day off work if it had been!
Don\'t get me started on the greatest money pit, due 2012 in London.
Chill out, have a beer, the sun is still out!
Hey I moved to Cyprus in April... The sun is always out, has been a good discussion this though!
The Royal family cost the UK taxpayer £7.5 million a year, about the same as a decent secondary school. The rest of their income comes from private sources. In the Queen\'s case it\'s the Duchy of Lancaster, which is essentially a large investment and property portfolio that provides her income. In the Prince of Wales case it\'s the Duchy of Cornwall whose investment includes a lot of environmental energy companies and organic food concerns. The rest of the Royals have jobs, well paid ones but similar to everyone else.

If i could be bothered i am sure it could be found out how much it costs each taxpayer a year, not a lot is my guess!
Probably a lot less than it costs us to pay for all the Mp\'s and what revenue do they generate us? LOL
The thread is about The Royal Wedding, not about the annual cost of The Royal Family exc weddings!
If you post figures/statistics,links to your source would be useful.
http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/press_17_10.htm\\
It\'s £7.9 million, plus another £7 million for supporting the Queen in her duties as Monarch. So £14.9 million a year. More than I originally said however it\'s not enormous. It costs a similar amount to keep a Frigate/Destroyer sized warship at sea for 12 months. Considering the cost of the Millenium Dome, £750 million, they\'re a bargain!

Cheers for the link Will,it does appear the royal family costs per annum are a bargain!
Though i can\'t determine whether security costs are inc,but i\'ll let that one go,as that\'s part of the territory of being a royal.
What the link you provided dose\'nt inc is the cost of the recent Royal Wedding,as my CBI link does, although it\'s only an estimate

Dang :(
I couldn\'t care less what it cost, I thought it was great..... showing the rest of the world how it should be done....
There are bigger wastes of money going on in this country to get worked up about ....
welfare state, nhs waste, tax avoidance, scrapping the Ark Royal and building 2 new carriers that we can\'t afford, giving foreign aid to countrys more solvent than we are... etc etc....
and I\'d rather my money go to putting on a spectacle like this than it go in welfare payments to some dosser who\'s never contributed a penny.
At the end of the day I rather live in this perceived Royal land with a powerless Royal family that makes us a bit different to most countries, then out in the desert like some other kingdoms.
Quote from: BlitzBoy;759181At the end of the day I rather live in this perceived Royal land with a powerless Royal family that makes us a bit different to most countries, then out in the desert like some other kingdoms.
I\'ll agree with that one chap!
Well living under royal family and keeping royal family means, none of us can call ourseleves, Citizens of the UK, rather we are classed as subjects of her majesty the Queen!! I don\'t care, we royal family do, but the right to self determination should not be lost and the Bill of Rights 1688-99 should prioritise!! I really wanna be classed as citizen of this country not subject... U might wonder wat is da difference between subject and citizen!! The difference is,I.e. Presence of royal family means, no one own any land in the UK, it all belongs to queen and if she wants she can take it away any time she wants! (land property act 1925), the real question is y??? V are democratic, so wat is this dictatorship about???
Syed
Living as subjects of Her Majesty has its advantages, for instance, should the PM go mental and order Nuclear Strikes against other countries he can direct the Uniformed Military personnel to do so however, as a civilian we are not duty bound to follow his direction. As head of the Armed Forces the Monarch could order us not to follow that direction and pull us back from the brink of global annihilation. Conversely the Monarch could order the armed forces into war, however since War cannot be declared without legal and political machinations then the Monarch\'s order would be illegal and the Armed Forces would not have to follow it.
Sounds a bit Catch 22 but it would mean that if David Cameron or Nick Clegg came over all "Push the Red button and send them all to hell" without an awesomely good reason then we\'d stand a chance of being able to prevent the end of the world.
Quote from: goldk28611;759141Yes Nik it is :D and yes she is... :D
I second that motion :Thumbsup!
There are a lot of hot posh totty around Royal Weddings, my friend Steve the Lothario was one of the RN Officers lining the route the procession took back. He\'d have had to take a cold shower after seeing this lot.
I do think this was taking it a bit too far :)
