Title: ***TRACKDAY - Cadwell Park, Tuesday 7th June***
Post by: Casey on April 21, 2011, 09:08:41 PM
OK, just over 6 weeks to go, so time to start some organising for this trackday :D :D . I\'ll be posting up a parallel thread on the RX8OC forum and anyone with any rotary powered car is most welcome to join in the fun.
Details of the event can be found ON THIS LINK (http://www.mazdaontrack.co.uk/cadwell-park---tuesday-7th-june---full-opl-490-p.asp)
Don\'t worry if you\'ve never been on track before (there\'s a first time for everything!). The days are safe, well managed and there\'s plenty of help and advice on hand to make sure you enjoy the day. You wil be amazed at how good the RX-8 is on track - the grin you will get when you realise just how fast you can take corners is guaranteed. Then, if you opt for some tuition and let a pro drive your car for a couple of laps, you\'ll realise you were just exercising 75% of the car\'s capability! All you need is a roadworthy car, a full driver\'s licence and a helmet (the latter can be hired on the day for ~£10)
Further details and booking your trackday place can be found by clicking HERE (http://www.rotaryshop.co.uk/bcadwell-park---tuesday-7th-juneb-1673-p.asp). I\'m using the MRC shop to collect payments to simplify getting payments to Mazda on Track, who we will be booking through for this event.
Please note that our partners, Mazda on Track, have not been able to secure exclusive use of the track and so places might sell out well before the day, so please book early or you might be disappointed...
Cost for track participants is £164, but anyone who is a a FULL MRC member (not guests) pay the "Members Rate" of £144 through the shop. In addition, Full Members of the RX8OC ought to be able to claim back some costs in accordance with the policy agreed at this year\'s AGM. Further details later on this....
OK, I\'ll maintain the following list IN THIS POST at the START of this thread, So anyone interested just needs to post up and I\'ll edit this "master list" - saving duplicating the list over and over :D
DRIVER LIST (just post in this thread, or PM me, and I\'ll edit this list to keep things tidy) Casey - RX-8 Trackday booked, Hotel Beaumont booked 6th & 7th Shaunwil Trackday booked, Zarterone Trackday booked Ian.Mothersole Trackday booked Hypothermia Trackday booked Arnie_O - RX-8 Antnicuk 1 Trackday booked, Hotel Beaumont booked 6th Antnicuk 2 Trackday booked, Hotel Beaumont booked 6th Antnicuk 3 Trackday booked, Hotel Beaumont booked 6th Antnicuk 4 Trackday booked, Hotel Beaumont booked 6th Antincuk 5 Trackday booked, Hotel Beaumont booked 6th Clive Trackday booked Hotel Beaumont booked 6th t2rew Trackday booked
SPECTATORS/PASSENGERS - ENTRANCE IS FREE (just post in this thread, or PM me, and I\'ll edit this list to keep things tidy) TiddlesRX7
Accommodation. Some of us will want to stay overnight before the event to get a fresh start. As last year I\'ll be staying at the Beaumont Hotel at nearby Louth, details HERE (http://thebeaumonthotel.co.uk/). Rooms are from £45, inc a hearty english breakfast. Nick and Tina run this family owned hotel and looked after us well for a couple of years now. If you want to book a room at the Beaumont then either phone direct on 01507 605 005, or email tina@terracerestaurant.co.uk (please mention you are one of the "Rotary Group" when booking). For those on a budget, there are a few twin rooms available at £30/head (sharing), inc breakfast - a bargain. First come, first served, so be quick, as there are only a limited number of rooms. There is plenty of off-road secure parking there too!
From previous experience, I\'ll be staying TWO nights, so I don\'t have to rush back after the event. If you feel the same, book in for two nights too!
Trackday Insurance. If you need any advice, then please ask away...
Anything else, ask away.... (but bear in mind I\'m away most of this weekend, 22-25 April, so please be patient!)

Post by: Casey on April 21, 2011, 09:34:21 PM
^^Keith, this is a VERY popular event on a fantastic circuit - arguably the best in the UK. Based on previous years, I\'d expect anything between 12-20 rotaries this year at Cadwell. All you need to do to secure your place is follow the link to the club shop and pay up.
We\'ve got 20 guaranteed places reserved at the moment, but I will have to give up unsold places on May 7th and cannot guarantee places after that date.
If you have any questions at all, just post up here.
I hope you can join us for a fun day out :D

Hi Guys. Im sad to say I won\'t be doing this event this year :( The way my financial state is at the moment I just can\'t justify spending money on a track day. New mortgage and my 2nd child being born have to be a priority for me atm. I am hoping to get to the event still though to cheer/abuse all of you as you go round, and perhaps grab a passenger ride or two. I\'ll also bring my camera for the day too.

Ian - you\'ll absolutely love it!
Everyone - plenty of availability at the Beaumont (as of this morning when I checked) for anyone who needs a room.

Whats the chances of a mate of mine tacking his skyline to this? He\'s interested in doing his first track day and this would be ideal. Would it be a case of members first but if there are spaces left he\'d be ok?

Ade, not problem. Best he books via the Mazda on Track website or The Circuitdays website. That way he won\'t eat into our reserved allocation. He\'s more than welcome, even if he has poor taste in cars (sorry, wanted to insert emoticon here, but smartphone won\'t let me!)

No problem I\'m always ripping him about his poor choice of car. Although His Skybus is one of a kind and he built it from the ground up himself and its pushing close to 500bhp. I\'ll let him know.

Cool, Cadwell are quite liberal with the noise test so I\'d of thought he\'d be ok. Oulton are definetly more strict anyway. Not sure if I\'ll run at this yet but might come over for the day.

Sorry not to reply to you yesterday, but you managed the "track" me down eventually whilst I was having a sneak preview of the new tarmac circuit at Blyton (Linclonshire). I had some great fun with Arnie_O and CrissyUK at Blyton checking out the circuit and rubbering in the new tarmac (well, someone has to do it :Giggle - it\'s a hard life!). I\'ll post up a thread on Blyton when I recover form yesterday\'s backlog of work......

Dom, your name and MRC registered email address was passed on Mazda on Track about 10 days ago. Normally they send out a confirmation email about now, but don\'t worry, your name will be on the list when signing on at Cadwell (or see me on the day if there is a problem!). The confirmation email is not a "ticket", just a reminder and a checklist. I\'ll post up a checklist for Cadwell that I produced last year, probably later today.

I\'ve attached a breifing pack for Cadwell next week. Most of you will have seen the contents before, but I\'d recommend a "skim read" in the next day or two to ensure you haven\'t fogotten anything.....
PLEASE DON\'T FORGET YOUR DRIVING LICENSE (both parts if you have them)!

OK, here\'s the details of a convoy, if anyone coming from the south wants to tag along. If you are travelling up on Monday, you are most welcome, just add your name so we know who to look out for.....
The plan is to meet at Perterborough Services on the A1 to leave at 2pm. I aim to be there about 1pm to get a bite to eat. Optionally, some of us might want to meet at the M11 Stansted (Birchanger) Services, to depart there at 12.15 (prompt!!).
From PB Services we\'ll follow the route Hypothermiaa has suggested - this route (http://goo.gl/maps/vG1e)along the A52 which seems to avoid more towns than the A15.

I\'ve only just got back, having been one of the party who stayed an extra night at the Beaumont Hotel.
What can I say, I think this was one of the best trackday events to date, and we\'ve had some really good ones in previous years! The trackday was awesome, aided by the near perfect weather and dry track. I sat in as a passenger in several cars and it was very educational to see the differences in everyone style of driving - I learned a lot from observing! The social side was superb and I thought the food and service at the hotel was 1st class. Thanks to everyone who supported this event and made it so enjoyable. Photos and videos will no doubt appear here soon, so those who were there can re-live some of the day, and others can see what they missed :Tongue1
Roll on next year\'s return to Cadwell, a truely superb track to drive.
Next Trackday event is Oulton Park on Friday, July 22nd, for whaich I will start a separate thread very soon.....
The other event which is proving popular is a full Open Pit Lane day at the brand new tarmac circuit at Blyton Park (in the same part of the country as Cadwell) on SATURDAY, 6th August. We\'ve already got 23 cars signed up for this at a bargain price; still some places left for anyone interested - just look for the separate thread on this one.

Quote from: shaunwil;767553Was a fantastic day, shame the video camera didn\'t work whist I had my spin (with Ian in the Car). Got some nice progressive images of the spin through from the camera lady !
I seem to remember on the next lap she was standing where you\'d parked the car on the grass, so lucky for her I guess. Very much enjoyed the ride in your FD (again!) and the spin at the bottom of Mansfield was very graceful and completely without panic. Lucky really as my spare pants were back at the hotel :Giggle I\'m also gutted that the camera had a flat battery at the start of the day when put to its first use.
I must say that the day was absolutely superb and thoroughly enjoyed the fine company, excellent weather and brilliant track. I\'ve got a ton of videos and stills to work through so I\'ll try and get a few tasters posted up shortly.
Oh, and Cadwell would not be complete without Malcolm\'s brakes making another appearance
Roll on the next event... :Thumbsup!

Oi! I think Arnie_O (Aston) is now the "brake pad eater King"! He put a brand new set of ET500 front pads on his car at ~10.30am and had virtually no pad left at 5pm. At least my pads had seen track action at Brands Hatch, Blyton Park and Japfest, as well as several months road use before expiring yesterday.
I think Aston was trying too hard to catch me in the afternoon sessions :Laugh

Excellent day with excellent people what more can I say------------------but I will :chat
Seriously we had the perfect English morning day at what has to be one of the most scenic tracks on the planet,
Couple of incidents, one was the sad loss of the black RX-8 powered kit car piloted by (I think ) Tony\'s (antnicuk ) cousin, plus the close close near disaster from the kid who nearly wrote off Andre\'s RX-8 with the Toyota banger racer that Dom has already shown above after he tried to lean in the car and start it in gear :Hammer .
Talking of banger racers it took a while to find my Rotary powered way past two big engined Beemers that were racing each other and had more grunt than a Gorilla eating a bunch of bananas :rollin:rollin:rollin:rollin( Dom and Jason please stand up :Giggle:Giggle )
Must admit I finally came away pleased that I had finaly got to grip with the track because Park corner had driven me mad because I could never get into it late enough or stable enough :(
Also good to see Tony (antnicuk ) have a good outing after previous problems, plus Jim (lennycarloff) showing yet again that you don\'t need a big buck car to go around the track after yet another brilliant showing in his EGI :Santa
lastly well done Malcolm for the organisation and roll on Oulton as it was awesome in the wet so it should be amazing in the dry (never raced at Oulton so I haven\'t drven it in the dry "yet" )

I never change a pad once :Giggle
Although I think I will be investigating the level of pad on my rears now. Plus locking up in to corners did make things very interesting. Was better with 28psi but it was still mental. Amazing to think there is a bump at the end of Park Straight that completely screws up non ABS braking. Nick said heavy brake, let go over the bump then brake again !

Yep i can testifuy to that beemer battle also, was getting a little annoyed at the M3 that i was all over in the corners but then planted its foot in the streight... only to find out that it was one of our own once they had come in.
There was no way i was following Clive (Yoda) through that overtaking maneuver, though i was gagging to try and hand on to the back of him (for all of the 100 yards that it would have been)
Awesome Day, Thanks to Casey for the work put in, and to Clive for the loan of the tools to do the pads with (yes i will be needing some more but also seeking some advice on how not to kill them so quickly next time)
The bunch that went where awesome as always, and very few incidents of other drivers being idiots and lot letting you past even when you where quicker. The only real annoyance for many of us was a Caterham driver that seemed to enjoy holding us all up throughout the day. only to have him fall off of the track (trying to push it too hard) in front of me going through "Park" you would not believe the pleasure we all got from that one.
hopefully i will be able to see myself in to the direction of Olton as i am told by those that have been thats its an equally awesome track.
Till the next time...

Thx - I was only just getting into 3 figures at the end of the back straight - I saw 105mph on one glance down before braking. It\'s quite uphill there and the 8 really needs more power in that portion of the circuit as it\'s really struggling to gain speed up the hill in 4th. It\'s the part of the circuit where many turboed or lighter weight cars pull away, only to be caught again in later corners, unless they are good drivers in the corners (Zarterone being one :god in his Megane RS250 Cup).
Yep, still trying to decide if Cadwell or Oulton is my favourite in the UK. Cadwell really is a fantastic circuit to drive - it has a bit of everything. I really love going back there, this being my 4th visit.

Nice video Jim! Though we won\'t be doing this with Kimi...
The camera I was using was an H808 #11, which produces a true 720p high def video output and records for about 45 minutes. You can get them on ebay for about 25 quid and you\'ll have to make sure they produce H.264 (Bluray) output. For a bit more outlay you can get one with a slightly different case design that has a larger battery.
I\'ve now got a second one of these ready to go :D

OK, details on the key fob cameras for those who are interested:
Here\'s the ebay seller that I\'ve been buying from, I\'ve not had a package go amiss yet and the comms has been pretty good: internet-shop365 (http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/internet-shop365&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSX:SELLERID)
The cameras now seem to come in two flavours, the main difference being an extended battery life. You\'re looking for an H808 #11 camera that produces MOV output files in the H.264 format at 1280x720 resolution and 30fps. Other formats indicate a different type of camera and lower picture quality, as does a much cheaper price ;)
The original H808 with approx 45 minutes of recording time (I\'ve got two of these now) (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HD-dashboard-11-Key-Chain-Camera-Video-Recorder-H808-/250807174605?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item3a6545c5cd) Newer design with a larger battery, slightly more expensive (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-11-HD-DV-Lens-Webcam-Meeting-Camera-Recorder-DVR-/260793984420?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cb88865a4)
You\'ll also need a microSD card. Recording 20 minutes of video takes about 1Gb of storage, so I\'d recommend a minimum of 4Gb. You should also get a class 4 or higher card (otherwise you risk dropping frames and disrupting the video recording). Unfortunately Ebay is notorious for re-programming SD cards to have a larger capacity, so links are to Amazon instead.
Sample 8Gb microSD card from Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-8GB-Micro-SD-HC/dp/B001CQT0X4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308467059&sr=8-1) 4Gb microSD card from Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-memory-microSDHC-adapter-included/dp/B000VX6XL6/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1308467133&sr=8-17)
Finally you\'ll need something to connect the camera to the car, I\'ve used 3M Dual Lock tape which is like velcro but much much better. It has more uses than just mounting cameras :Thumbs-up
3M Dual Lock, 1m length (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3M-DUAL-LOCK-HEAVY-DUTY-5X-STRONGER-THAN-VELCRO-TAPE-/360224753877?pt=UK_DIY_Material_Nails_Fixing_MJ&hash=item53df1188d5) 3M Dual Lock, more length options but more expensive (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3M-Dual-Lock-Stronger-Than-Heavy-Duty-VELCRO-/250804917165?pt=UK_DIY_Material_Nails_Fixing_MJ&var=&hash=item801049bcfe)

Ian, do you use a class 4 card??
I had a class4 in my camera and using it at Finmere last year, even this had dropped frames etc. Now have a class6 (8GB) card, and its much better (as you can see in my youtube videos), well worth the extra money.

The minimum recommended for these cards is a class 4, though not all cards are created equal and some can underperform in a nasty way :(
I actually have a class 6 however it might be pressed into service into another video or SLR camera at short notice so I thought it worth having the higher spec.

No problems Chris - I\'m still looking at other things that I can do with the cameras on the day.
We\'re using video cameras to do the timing for us, and very much after the day has completed. Unfortunately the track day event has insurance that specifically excludes lap timers and such as it is a non-competitive event. I must admit that I\'d like the feedback from knowing that I\'m going quicker and improving, however those are the rules :Grrr
