Hi Guys,
I was noticing alot of you guys are in the mix of finishing some awesome builds and rebuilding some even finer cars.
What I have noticed though, is that some of you guys are jumping around trying to decide on a tuner, either your moving from one or looking for someone creditable.
I was wondering how much of you guys would be interested in having Steve Kan come over and Tune. He\'s a close personal friend of mine, and I\'ve brought him over to the Islands to tune alot cars there, and yet to have an unhappy person.
Since Im studing in the UK and I still have unlimited access to him, I though I\'d share his talent with you guys if you wanted it.
(Mods.. Sorry if this isnt the thread for this, can you please move it to the right section :wiggle)
here is his website for those of you who might not know the man himself : http://kantuning.com/forum/
more info: http://kantuning.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=127
You can also check out the us forum rx7club.com and you will read awesome things about him.
BTW, he is far from limited to rotaries. He is definitely no stranger to imports and even turbo V8\'s. He is also doing Personal water crafts now, and set the fastest speed on a stock engine craft in Cayman at 82mph with tuning coming from a motec ecu. (I think this record has been broken now)
Here is basic info on the man himself:
Steve Kan is one of the most renowned car tuners in the world. He has tuned countless vehicles using name brand aftermarket fuel management systems. He has evolved his own skills and methods tuning rotaries, and piston engines. Click Here to read what people have to say.
Steve started his tuning journey in 1995 from his personal vehicle. After success with his car, along with many others who wanted his tuning ability services, he started making a name for himself in the rotary community. In 1998 he teamed up with Rotary Performance, and launched his professional racing career. Since then he has opened his own performance facility in Fort Worth, called Gotham racing, and travels all over within the United States providing tuning services.
“Many people ask how I came up with the shop named Gotham racing. The answer is very simple. My race car was nicknamed the "Bat Mobile " at the tracks and local street scene.”
Steve earned a degree in BSEE (Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering) and has a wealth knowledge with electronics and programming. In college, he was involved with the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) program as a hardware designer for the engine management system. This, among other things, is what makes Steve one of the best Rotary and Piston tuners in the world.

Hi mate,
I know Gotham Racing and I have read alot about it at RX7 club. My question is, lets suppose, if your mate comes over, and while tunning a car, he blows someone\'s engine or after the mapping session is over and the next day the engine blows up, WOULD HE INSURE HIS MAPPING OR TUNNING??
I am sure he is competent, but this is our/my grave concerns (see below)
Because, My engine is warrantied by my builder, So if I let your mate touch my car, strictly speaking my warranty is void and if he (your mate) blows my engine (without warranting it) I am done!!!
Everyone including myself is scared of blowing engine, so what is there (skill wise) with your mate that can address everyone\'s (at-least mine) concern in terms of assurance??
Cheers
Syed

No tuner in the World can guarantee an Engine won\'t blow or some sort of failure won\'t happen...:Hammer
Even if they built the thing themselves!!!
I get your point Mir, and thanks for posting this question...
To be quite honest, this is a hard one to answer... because it can be seen in the reverse. The argument can be whether or not your engine was ever built to be able to handle the power you were sold on that it is capable of. So I would say pretty much no.
However, I can tell you that Steve will talk to you about anything that he is concern about before he goes forward on your car. Your not going to hear POP unless you told him to push till it goes POP or your engine or anything else had a failure.
Again, I am more than confident that Steve can tune ANY of these motors and so are others...ONCE everything is done correctly in the motor, fueling ,ignition and there are no electrical issues, then he can tune it.
His tuning skills are not questionable on the west side of the world. You have to see this man in action to understand how calculated he is.
Mind you, if something was to happen, I wold be more than confident to say it is something in your setup.(I understand that this is hard to swallow but he has yet to be proven wrong) If anyone has any doubts I would say ask your engine builder about Kan, if they don\'t know him then do your research. You\'ll only find positive things.
Thanks again Mir, keep the questions coming, I will try to answer as much of them, if not ill ask Steve to chime in.

Thanks TRex... I completely agree..
This is the risk everyone takes with the quest for more power.

Guys Please if you plan on debating about this, I ask that you start a new thread... Syed I answered your question to the best of my abilities. What you ask is pretty much unheard of especially for any high HP application. If you can get someone to tune your car and guarantee warranty from another garage, then I would say you have a great deal on your hand and you shouldnt let it go.
@Trex, If someone says to me "Syed this engine will never blow" I may say what you just suggested, however, if you read my post carefully, I am not asking him to warranty the engine FOREVER, I am asking him to warranty the work he is going to do for a day/weeks/Months/years etc etc etc.. Nothing is forever, but there is nothing wrong in asking for a peace of mind for some time..
I HOPE, I am not causing a debat, just airing my concern-thats all
Syed
Syed Thanks for sharing your concern.. I hope i\'ve answered your question.
That would be excellent for the rotarys over here. Steve is probably the best tuner in the world. . :).
Keith:god
Guess no one is interested then...
I have thought the same ive been speaking with C.Ludwig off Rx7club about the same..
I would be interested if someone experienced in rotary tuning come to the Uk to tune by new engine and setup thats going in..
what would be the costs involved?
ive seen someones engine from here thats spent loads of money with Pip and because they were chasing numbers and it layed over the tuner said its the ecus fault yet he built the engine for 2bar of boost and was no where near it when it lost comp!!!
My car back home has been tuned by Rx Engineering and also Maztech and again if your setup is built properly it wont be the fault of the experienced tuner but the incorrect setup or it not being up to scratch.. My engine is 7 years old and has seen 2 different tuners and has ran 127mph on 14psi on pump fuel and it still starts on the key!!
Any update if Steve is coming over or is it only if there is a hand ful of cars to tune?
Any movement on this at all or if this is going to happen??
not sure 12at.. it all depends on how many people become interested. Guess people are afraid of making HP. lol
These tuning day adventures are a crock of ....!
IMHO how good a job do you think you are going to get on a day crammed full of other people and your car being just another in a stream of ones doing a few pulls?
It takes ....ing hours and hours of tuning to perfect your car (some peoples std of perfection is wildly different to others)! The best thing you can do is learn how to do this yourself! (its not that hard, how do you think all of these experts suddenly appeared LOL!!!!!) :Thumbsup! or find the one of MANY competent people in your country who can do this. I know of at least half a dozen tuners in your country who would be all over this basic requirement.
You will PAY for the hours (a full day!) required to do a proper full job on your car (not including the multiple days required to do all sorts of other things like cold start mapping!).
You will NOT BE PAYING FOR FLIGHTS, ACCOMMODATION, FOOD, or TRANSPORT or RENTAL of FACILITIES for a fly in quickie :Talking1
Tune days or group tunes are a scam!
A proper job requires a car to be left with a tuner for a week so it can be fit around other things and to allow ALL parameters to be finely tuned and analysed to perfection. It takes over 2 hours to fully instrument a car (not trusting the crap fitted to most budget builds in the rotary world)

This is what exactly I have done. My car is with WGT and it will be tuned by Pip and Motec Staff together in order to fine tune it. WGT has asked me to leave my car with them for 6 weeks so that it can be looked at from all parameters and fine tuned at different levels.
Hence, I agree with you.:cheers

Exactly.
I have done tune days and the proper way (like you have decided). Having tried to implement both across all platforms its just a bad joke opting for a "tune day" by an eggspert.
It takes a ******** LONG TIME to get a proper job done, no ifs or buts about it!, you get what you pay for. And if someone lies to you about getting a
comprehensive job done on a tune day then they are just an idiot or lying to you period.
My experience for what its worth for young players.
I agree , a proper map does take time, 2 hours minimum if there is no issues ( there always are) on a normal street car
I spent 5 hours mapping a drag car (now in the 9 second zone) , and the map is still not perfect , albeit its done the job, still need to fine tune the spool up areas etc etc
Mapping should not be rushed, so if there is pressure of other cars waiting you may not get the full benefit. Yes Steve Kan has a good rep, but there are others in the UK that are good tuners so why fly someone in ? Uk Tuners are eg Dragon,Reworx,Jaydee,Pip etc etc
to each their own guys... just trying to give other options.
Since this scam is blown, I guess there is no need fir this thread.
Mods please close.
Thank you all.
