got an rx7 thats had rebuilt engine 17,000 miles ago runs fine cant find any isues as of yet. i do have tuning experiance but with toyota 3sgte\'s and fiat and alfas (work for tuning company to do with alfas) i dont like to skim so only good parts wanted to be used no baily bov or xspower crap please.
list of mods on the car at the mo
3" turbo back exhaust
moddifed turbo (waistgate or something done to do with the exhaust)
apexi air filter
emittion devices removed
alternator pully replace with twin belt type
stock boost but have boost gauge fitted
items have but not fitted
stage 1 clutch and lightweight flywheel
apexi boost controler (electric)
new direct carbon cold feed airfilter
fmic (not bought but in middle of buying one)
ok i know about lean fuel ect blows the rex lump up unlike a 4 pot ect where lean is good.
what would you guys recomend i do ecu wise? is te stock one able to be remapped or is it a csae of greddy piggyback or stand alone?
eventualy ill be going to new injectors and ball bearing type turbo something like a gt28r or gt3076r good for a rex or not??? not after big power just around 250-280 for now maybe 320 later on.
any other things i should think about doing like said wanna get the right bits before i tune the car not bolt everything on and watch it blow up.
also the car is a weekend toy not a daily drive have a colt for that.
thanks
welcome back!
Right. Sounds like you\'ve got a ported wastegate. This is done when a larger exhaust is fitted to stop boost creep. If you have the stock ecu and run 1psi above stock boost pressure you\'ll hit fuel cut.
Now I\'ve heard some people suggest the stock ecu has a map for up to around 0.9-1 bar but you\'ll need an FCD to stop the fuel cut. What alot of other people tend to do is run the stage 1 chips (piggy backs or whatever, not remappable). These tend to be mapped for; air filter, exhuast, fmic, they eliminate fuel cut and the rev limit. Additionally they usually have a more agressive map. With the chip, exhuast and 0.9 bar of boost, you should see somewhere between 270-300bhp.
Worth mentioning that the stock injectors et close to their limit at 0.9 bar and so does the stock intercooler. You\'ll also want to look at hard wiring the fuel pump.
If you plan on running this much power i\'d also look at an uprated radiator.
I\'ve always heard that bb turbo\'s arn\'t good for rotaries, can\'t confirm though. Persoanlly I\'d look at going for some sort of twin scroll t04e or a hybrid. Then you\'ll be need some sort of mappable ecu, injectors etc.
Think that covers most. Theres a good guide on FC3spro called from mild to wild thats worth looking at
soz for the lon depart sold my fc non turbo years ago and went to a mr2 turbo rev4 till i hit oil on the road least the post and tree the side of the car hit didnt live eather haha but nor did the car after the firemen took my roof and door away its all go fun though.
kool thanks for the info
well i ahve a budget of about 2k to spend only reason i went with ball bearing turbo is there isnt much lag as they spin up very easy,
yer was planning ecu, injectors and intercooler think ill also look for a ally rad and pos better oil cooler
yer the boost creep thing on the waistagte sound right.
as far as the ecu goes i would much rather have a piggyback or stand alone as chips ect ant mapped to your car, aslo dont like the idea of a fcd espech if the stock fc is so close to the stock boost normaly you get away with a good 3psi.
thanks i will go out buying.
forgot to mention what injectors are woth going for? fd\'s?? also what are the stock size as i have quite a few injectors around and some might be the right ones.
fuel pump wise ill pit in a wilbro and driect wire it up to battery via a kill swithc.
The stock size FC injectors are 2 X 550CC injectors per rotor, top feed, upgrades that are common are to upgrade the injectors in the secondary fuel rail to 800s or 1680s and keep the primary injectors OEM so it keeps the idling and drivability, but has enough fueling top end when you need it. If you have had piston cars before then the injectors you have laying around are probably too small.
With the Walbro (im running one) you need to install an FPR else the reduced resistance of the Walbro vs stock pump runs it at a higher pressure causing the fuel pressure to rise and it to run rich on idle (mine is epically rich lol)

There\'s nothing to stop you running a piggy back like Greddy Ultimate on the back of a chipped ECU.
There are good reasons for doing this:
1) It\'s a good base to work from, most of the chips are setup for 3" decat, air filter / induction mods, higher boost without fuel cut - so does away with the need for an FCD
2) Good piggy backs let you look at AFR\'s on the map in the chipped ECU, and you can swap the old one back in to see the differences. I did this and there is a lot more to some of these maps than just some fuelling tweaks
3) You can run things like bigger turbo\'s, bigger fuel injectors or adjust for aftermarket fuel pumps using the piggy back
4) You can eliminate the Air Flow Meter
I run a Greddy emanage Ultimate with 800 secondaries from Sard, and a hybrid turbo (Garrett compressor with stock Htachi turbine section with a ported wastegate and mod to allow wastegate flap to open further), the emanage looks after electric radiator fans, and also can be setup to run WI or other mods, or control further additonal injectors.
cool well wil be looking into it more if i can find a greddy ill prob go that route. dont really like the idea of losing the rev limiter.
There are quite a few Greddy e-manage blues (the basic version of it) on Driftworks at the moment, some OEM ECUs didn\'t have limits on, my Knightsports map had decreased my rev limit to 9k :D
tbh I wouldn\'t worry about the rev limit. The stock turbo begins to run out of steam around 6500 and it becomes obvious you need to change gear.
Also i wouldn\'t worry abou the stock oil cooler, they\'re rather good!
Ive always been against the FCD too, but I have been told that the FC\'s do actually have a map for up to about a bar of boost from when they were raced
Quote from: billybobbooth;756507cool well wil be looking into it more if i can find a greddy ill prob go that route. dont really like the idea of losing the rev limiter.
You can always put it back in again with the emanage ultimate ;)
Oil cooler, diff and gearbox are good for 500bhp or more, its the fueling and the cooling that you need to upgrade :)
cool well i have found a ally rad that looks good but you need to use a blitz d1 rad cap, found a few chips but they seem to be made chicps rather than a kinght sport or anything i should have one at home from years ago but not sure where it is.
also found a good few t04b turbos but cant find a exhaust manifold can find one that is designed to work with a single scroll inlet turbo but not the twin scroll but would a fd3s manifold fit as there are a few about designed for the twin scroll inlet turbos about. if it would just be a case if the waistguate pipe being shortened i can sort that if the thing would just bolt onto the blocks??
well i have a after market oil cooler about so may as well use it. diff is a fd gearbox seems to be ok. but if its not is it worth putting a fd box in and fd clutch and converting the car to pull type? as im going to put a clutch in and flywheel anyways but havent bought them yet as just going to buy everything and fit all at same time and have it all mapped together.
also anyone know where i can find a greddy for the fc or any other recomendid ecu wether its piggyback or standalone.???
m1tch
didnt relise you in berko have to go snooping round now to find your ca as im only just outside tring.
Yeah, I live in Watford at the mo, but the car is in Berkhamsted, the Greddy ultimate is a piggyback, although its really good, check out the for sale thread though as there is a stand alone microtech WITH a Turbo II loom :)
I have a basic aftermarket T4 manifold in the garage, and for clutches and gearboxes, the FC box is very good, for clutches you can just buy an FD clutch and not fit the converter lol im running an FD ORC 709 clutch
Well there is no crunching or anything so guessing my box is ok.
Yer greedy is fine just hard to find.
Only asked about the manifold as the turbo i have is a twin entry and was hoping to utilise it by having a twin entry manifold that\'s all.
