Driving my RX7 last night (1996 FD) and changed gear then notice a drop in performance, by time I got home when i pulled up it was spluttering (as if it wasn\'t firing correctly) and vibrating.
Left it until i got home today from work and started it back up again and it started up but again was spluttering and vibrating then engine cut off after about 3 seconds or so? but now wont start up at all. when i turn the key it doesn\'t do much!
Any info will be appreciated, live in derby so not exactly around the corner to any specialists :(
Thanks guys.
How does the car actually sound, does it sound kinda like a tractor noise?
And does it settle when you get it up to 3000rpm?

Hi mate, when it was running, yeah it did kind of sound like a tractor, but as 3k on revs, it still wasn\'t ok and was sluggish to react when using the accelerator. luckily this happened not far from home!
thanks.
Hmmm I\'m guessing and this is only a guess but it sounds like a chipped tip but I maybe completely wrong hopefully someone can correct me if I am wrong
A video of the car would be best so we could see the problem
Kris
I hope not :( lol. so do you reckon its a lack of compression is why its not starting up then? if it doesn\'t turn out to be that thanks for possible fault any way :)
That could possibly be the reason for not starting and sounding really rough, what was the idle speed roughly? Lower then usual?
Kris
when it was running, yeah it was lower than usual, approx around 800 revs?
One sec let me do a search and see if I can find a thread I remember from a while ago
Kris
Just had a quick butchers on YouTube
Does it act or sound like this?

sounded similar but mine was juddering more, bit like the feeling when a car is about to stall kind of but through different rev ranges???
Quick thing to check is the boost sensor pipe hasn\'t popped off so its running super rich (makes it see atmosphere all the time). Its a small sensor behind the throttle body with a small pipe between it and the plenum.
Hopefully it isn\'t anything serious, don\'t panic straight away and just check for all the simple stuff first.
Shaun
I\'m not to sure then, from what you said it sounds like a chipped tip which is not the end of the world fortunately, but hopefully people smarter then me will be able to pin point what the problem could be
Have you checked inside the engine bay? Anything look suspicious?
Kris
map sensor hose popped off,
cheers guys appreciate it :) yeah going to check the small things in the mean time, probs saturday when im off work. yeah had a quick look round and didnt see any holes or rotors stuck in my bonnet but will have another check around
si
Oh crap forgot about the map sensor what a nob forgot they have similar symptoms

haha, we all have these moments! where abouts is that then? sorry people only had it for two weeks and trying to get to grips with the engine etc...
in a way ive learned alot all ready to be honest :) every day is a school day lol
If you open the bonnet you will see the plenum on the very top of the engine and it has the throttle body attached to it, just above the throttle body and to the right a little you will see a small black box which on it should say boost sensor it\'s pretty easy to spot luckily
That\'s what you need to look at, if I remember correctly it should have a rubber hose attached to the nipple (yeah I said it) on the base and should also have a plug attached
Hope this helps
Kris
Yes its either the sensor(cheap fix) or a tip gone(not so cheap)
Crossing my fingers for you man, Ive had two engines with very similar symptoms, am rebuilding the most recent as we speak!!
Good Luck
James
Thanks bud, will have a ganders tomorrow after work, bit hard to see at the minute lol
